As the newly announced L4D2's prices are shown in Amazon, the fans have started a group in steam to boycott the new game. The highly anticipated group has reached over 5000 members by 6/4/09

The group plans to change Valve's direction on the upcoming game. Apparently while games like Team Fortress 2 are $19.99, fans of L4D were not happy to pay $49.99 for L4D to begin with, but when amazon started pre-orders for L4D2 with the same price tag things turned bad.

Now the already newly developing community awaits Valve's decision on the new game.
You may reach and join the group on Steam Page from this LINK

L4D2-Boycott wrote: The few people here who defend the decision to make L4D2 seem to not understand what everyone is upset about. I've tried to summarize the most common issues I've heard people having in hopes that it clears things up:

* Significant content for L4D1 was promised, and never delivered
* Valve put little faith in L4D1 since they almost certainly started working on L4D2 right after release
* The fact that L4D2 is nearly identical to L4D1 will decimate the community for both games
* The announced date is not nearly enough time to polish content or make significant gameplay changes
* The new character designs seem bland and unappealing so far
* L4D2 is too bright to fit in with L4D1's visual aesthetic
* The fiddle-based horde music is extremely disliked, though the differently orchestrated music is otherwise welcome
* L4D2's release will result in a drop in quality and frequency for L4D1 content, even compared to before
* The community has lost faith in Valve's former reputation for commitment to their games post-release

The community doesn't have to boycott it this way. The more effective thing would be to simply make modifications and new campaigns for the first L4D.

After having played all the l4d 2-levels the people would remark that L4D gets periodically a great amount of new levels whereas L4D2 would be ignored by the mappers. That would be effective and disturbing for Valve.

Sounds like a far less efficient way to boycott. Atleast this way valve can clearly see they're not only losing money, but also customers.

The only problem is simple mapping and aesthetics are not the only issue. There are severe gameplay issues with L4D1 and lack of content that people are upset with. Valve is acting like a Console developer over Left 4 Dead and the community is just now beginning to realize this.

I bet even some of the Zerg gamers who play Left 4 Dead (the majority of L4D players) are coming to realise this as well.

The real solution would be to release the SDK for L4D and release L4D as a cheap expansion. I don't know why they are releasing an entire new game anyway theres almost 0 new content. If modders had the SKD there would be far more custom content and gameplay changes than Valve could count which would increase sales ten fold on the original game.

What Valve released is hardly an SDK. Oh boy, I can do EVERYTHING I could do since the release of the game. The SDK doesn't let you do half the things an SDK should that valve has released. You can't make gameplay changes, PERIOD because Valve decided not to let people. No gameplay changes, nothing. End of Story.

Why did they gave us a half baked sdk? So then we can only map for L4D and not mod it. That way, we don't take away their customer's attention with the community's work.

They probably might not even release the sdk (completely) till L4D2 comes out as a way of pinning us players and modders down...

Yes, but I wonder of the 7,000 (or 8,000 whatever) how many of those people just joined just because? What's the reasoning for joining? That must be analyzed. Secondly, even if all 7,000 people are angry, do they REALLY even have a true right to be angry? Don't get me wrong here, I'm not trying to say those 7,000 people are stupid or anything or don't have a right, I'm just wondering if it's based on real facts. All I'm saying is that people need to not be so quick to judge. What's also ironic is that they're releasing new content but people actually don't want it. Hmm, what's wrong with that picture? Secondly, people complain that Valve takes too long to release a game. Um, wait a second... L4D2 is coming out in a year, and everyone is actually complaining? (Yes, that's not a very good argument because I know that many people want a "good" sequel. Of course, good can mean different things to different people, however. Anyway, it just seems kind of ironic.)

I also want to point out that yes, I've been shocked by the announcement myself, and at first I started to doubt Valve, but after giving it some thought I will reserve major judgement for when it's released. I can say though that I am NOT happy about the thought of paying for a sequel that is 49.99. Then again, with all the supposed content i've heard about, maybe that justifies the price? I'm really not sure.

I love the idea of new L4D2 coming out,but this is waaaayy too early I say..the SDK just came out, still waiting on 3rd party mods for l4d,and what about any new content? I'm sure they might throw some curveballs at us but I really hope this game won't go into a foul zone ,Understand they want to make steam players and xbox players satisfied but theres how many steam accounts? I doubt this won't be a huge impact on valve, but maybe they will surprise us..at least I will be able to see better as playing infected :) !cheers!

Or maybe they're going to buy it because they like Left 4 Dead and are interested in the new features being introduced. Don't insult people because they're willing to pay money for something you see as worthless or overpriced.

True, Valve looks like it`s giving us the finger

Imagine if counter-strike 2 was released 6 months after the original, with ideas that could be on the original and costing 49.99.

Valve liked the taste of money, and never looked back...

I hear the whaaambulance coming >_>

- Usually when a company starts working on a sequel immediately, it's because they have such faith in the first title that they know the sequel will generate more revenue.

- I'll reserve how similar I think the gameplay is when I see more than just a prerendered trailer with zombies. That said, it's a sequel. I'd expect similarities.

- It's an engine they created and have been working with for several years now. The first game is fleshed out, and they started work immediately on the sequel. There's probably a bit they can do to it in that time.

-The new characters don't seem bland, they seem natural, real. This is far better than the super cliche biker and war vet grunting out the occasional line. The new characters also sound like they will develop as the chapters continue too, a big step up from the original bunch that had no connection and no growth.

- L4D2 is not too bright to fit in. Why kind of sad world do people live in where they think zombies only appear at night? It's not all in the daylight, and I hear the director has control over time now.

From the looks of it, gameplay video which mostly focuses on more some noob being quite behind the rest of his teammates, getting destroyed XD

A few random minutes here and there can not show the character progression throughout the game. Especially when the video is just showing the action, not the use of the radial menu or any rest moments. I've only watched a few videos so far, so I'll keep going to see if one does.

So haven't you seen the gameplay vids? I'm not someone who complains a lot about games, and never have about Valve games but those gameplay vids look bad. The map looked bad and too right (daytime), characters look bland indeed. This looks more like an expantion or something, Hell, Im sure modders would come up with better stuff from what I've seen so far.

And just the short development time... you know that can't be good!

Also, I wa expecting a lot more content for the first one. I played L4D one week(maybe 2) because I got bored with the maps. I expected to get some more content like we get with every Vave game. If this is the amount of content they planned for the first it wasn't worth the money I payed for it!
I'm not going to buy the new one, probably not even if they make it better than the first.

I've seen them. The map didn't look bad at all (looked professional and in the style of the south, I dare you to do better :P). And come on, it's too bright?? Zombies are not vampires, they don't have rules which prevent them from doing their zombie apocalypse 24/7.

I don't see how the characters look bland, simply because they look like they have normal professions. It's quite possible that these characters actually have a personality, so much that the developers don't have to create the illusion of one through an exagerated and cliche stereotype. If they need to make any changes, it should just be to make the outfits a bit easier to distinguish from the horde (they did a similar redesign to the original 4 in it's development).

1 year is also a good amount of time. There was one year between JKA and JO, and those two games looked similar on the surface. JKA warranted being a full price stand-alone game and not an expansion.

Yes, but there's a scale of magnitude between TF and TF2, DOD and DOD:S and CS and CS:S. It's (exactly) like comparing HL1 and HL2. Several years, a new engine and EVERYTHING new from the group up save a few base ideas. The difference between L4D and L4D2, as far as we can tell right now, is not so huge.

I don't get it, why not make an expansion instead of dividing the players between two different games..
C'mon, give us an expansion, make the new characters available on the old campaigns for expansion owners, and give L4D1 new melee weapons available to everyone, also give L4D1 the charger.

Now would that be too hard? Now you get one game where you can choose to pay for more campaigns and characters, instead of dividing the playerbase by doing two different games..

Reply Good karma Bad karma+2 votes
Cryrid
Cryrid - - 197 comments

It goes beyond just adding new weapons, enemies, and character models. Even the zombies react differently now. Before two shots in the foot and they are dead. Now you can take off their limbs and they crawl after you. It would probably be easier for them to add L4D content to L4D2 than the other way around.

Ideally, Valve should set up a system where L4D1 users get a nice discount on it, where as new users pay the full price. Or offer the $25 deal again - that's what I paid for mine.

Not to mention, that amazon post is hard to believe. Honestly L4D2 is no different than Half-life 2 episodes. Its a completely new game with similiar gameplay. Its has an enhanced engine which is reprogrammed enough that updating the original game could potentially break the campaigns.

This is PATHETIC.

How do you know L4D2 isn't polished? Have you played it yet?
How do you know nothing in L4D2 can't be in an addon? Add-ons do just that, they add new maps/weapons/assets. Same game, more levels. L4D2 is more than just that. It reworks the gameplay itself. The amputations, the zombie behaviour, maps that actually change instead of being the same experience every time. It actually ties the characters and the chapters together instead of just being random levels, etc. This is more than an addon, it needs a new foundation to support it.
