A free-roaming squad based RPG.  Focusing on open-ended gameplay features rather than a linear story.  Be a trader, a thief, a rebel, a mercenary, a business owner, a doctor, a bandit... the list goes on. 

  • Original take on the RTS-RPG hybrid genre. No "hero" characters with artificially stronger stats than everybody else-  Every character and NPC you meet is potentially an equal, and has a name, a life. 
  • You are not the chosen one.  You're not great and powerful. You don't have more 'hitpoints' than everyone else. You are not the center of the universe, and you are not special. Unless you work for it.
  • Freeform gameplay in a seamless game world stretching over 400 square kilometers.  The game will never seek to limit you or restrict your personal play style.
  • Variation and possibilities of gameplay. Be good, be evil, be a business man, be a thief, live in a town, live in the desert, join the army, fight the army, travel alone, travel in hordes, build a fortress, raze a city.
  • Purchase and upgrade your own buildings to use as safe fortified havens when things go bad, or use them to start up a business. 
  • Carry your wounded squad mates to safety and get them all home alive.
  • Dynamic, ever changing world. Support or hinder whoever you wish, or keep to yourself, the world won't stop moving. This is not just a "game", you are living and surviving in a simulated world.
  • Absolutely no Level-scaling.  The world does not level up along with you, and the shops don't change their inventory to only items matching your level. At the start of the game almost everyone will be stronger than you, and survival will always be a struggle.
  • Realistic medical system that affects gameplay.  A character with a wounded leg will limp or crawl and slow the party down, wounded arms means you must use your sword one-handed or not at all.  Lose an eye and it will affect your field of vision.  Blood loss means you can pass out, and the blood will attract predators.  Exhaustion affects performance and is increased by equipment weight, weather, blood loss and thirst.  Severed limbs will need expensive robotic replacements.
  • Intelligent AI that allows for characters to reason and work towards long-term goals and desires. Squads work together and carry their wounded to safety. Characters can be setup to take care of micromanagement for you.
  • Aid or oppose the various factions in the world while striving for the strength and wealth necessary to simply survive in the harsh desert. 
  • Independently developed with no design influences, or alterations dictated by men in gray suits who have never played a game before in their lives.
  • Original game world. There are no fantasy-knock-off cliches. No magic.

Over the last few months, Olly has been working hard on Kenshi's new world. Four times the size of the current one, this will have a nice variety of different biomes: Swamp Lands, Savannas and Tar Sands... and more.

To all the fans of the current desert look though: don't worry, there will still be a desert biome as well. Check out some of Olly's experimental work-in-progress landscapes...

Experimental biome

The process involves selecting a small area of heightmap (a huge greyscale texture) from the main world map, and loading it into ZBrush. Here, Olly sculpts it into it's basic shape, for example cliffs, hillocks, dunes, bluffs, gulleys, cracked planet skin, arid features or swampy bogs. He then uses another editor, World Machine, to play around with features like erosion and terraces, before tweaking a bit more in ZBrush again.


Eventually during these process, he'll need to render out a heightmap and various textures - colourmaps, convexity maps, maybe angle, splatmaps or other information from macro's in that program. Then, this new heightmap would essentially be 'sewn' back into the original super-huge world greyscale heightmap.


The textures are added after developing the overlay map - this gives the land surface it's basic colour. Loose stones, sand, mud, dried lava flows, cliff beds etc, can all be then be added as textures for the surface of each individual region.

These and the normal maps that go with them then get applied to the world surface super easily thanks to the mapping systems of the Kenshi coders, Sam and Chris. Olly will then rebuild the world and load the game to check the results. Often excitement then turns to a huge list of fixes...

Please re-increase the length of time it takes for corpses to dissapear, I do not like this new system. I would love the addition of a "Bury" command so people with low spec rigs can just remove the corpses themselves. I didn't even wait 5 minutes and a bandit boss dissapeared before I could loot it.

To handle this alternatively, you could spawn animated (or still life to begin with) carrion birds that pick on the bodies of the fallen after an in-game day or less, and then they gradually change with the body showing it being bones and then it dissapears.

Please.

Thanks for the reply, although it's sad that so far i haven't been able to find any female companions. Also, the females i have found along my travels... all seemed like men. Maybe the kenshi universe, the women evolved to uglier beings, but it makes me cringe. I hope this isn't permanent.

Kenshi is a very ambitious game, it is as of the moment I'm writing this in a very unfinished state, but it's fun to play and it looks like with more love and care, this will be an absolutely great game.

Therefore I'm voting this a 10, I also bought the game to support the (currently) only developer working on it.

Despite the crashes, the content the game has now, made by only a single developer is very impressive in my opinion.

In it's current state, it deserves a one.

But because it's being updated and because its from one dude, it deserves a 4.

When its finally released, hopefully it will be worth a 10.
I don't see why people are just spamming 10 on this, lets be honest. in its current state, it is pretty sh*t. But we can all agree it WILL turn out great. (Don't hate me for the low rate, i'll re-review it with a high score as the game is being made. Or when its finished.)
