A free-roaming squad based RPG. Focusing on open-ended gameplay features rather than a linear story. Be a trader, a thief, a rebel, a mercenary, a business owner, a doctor, a bandit... the list goes on.

  • Original take on the RTS-RPG hybrid genre. No "hero" characters with artificially stronger stats than everybody else- Every character and NPC you meet is potentially an equal, and has a name, a life.
  • You are not the chosen one. You're not great and powerful. You don't have more 'hitpoints' than everyone else. You are not the center of the universe, and you are not special. Unless you work for it.
  • Freeform gameplay in a seamless game world stretching over 400 square kilometers. The game will never seek to limit you or restrict your personal play style.
  • Variation and possibilities of gameplay. Be good, be evil, be a business man, be a thief, live in a town, live in the desert, join the army, fight the army, travel alone, travel in hordes, build a fortress, raze a city.
  • Purchase and upgrade your own buildings to use as safe fortified havens when things go bad, or use them to start up a business.
  • Carry your wounded squad mates to safety and get them all home alive.
  • Dynamic, ever changing world. Support or hinder whoever you wish, or keep to yourself, the world won't stop moving. This is not just a "game", you are living and surviving in a simulated world.
  • Absolutely no Level-scaling. The world does not level up along with you, and the shops don't change their inventory to only items matching your level. At the start of the game almost everyone will be stronger than you, and survival will always be a struggle.
  • Realistic medical system that affects gameplay. A character with a wounded leg will limp or crawl and slow the party down, wounded arms means you must use your sword one-handed or not at all. Lose an eye and it will affect your field of vision. Blood loss means you can pass out, and the blood will attract predators. Exhaustion affects performance and is increased by equipment weight, weather, blood loss and thirst. Severed limbs will need expensive robotic replacements.
  • Intelligent AI that allows for characters to reason and work towards long-term goals and desires. Squads work together and carry their wounded to safety. Characters can be setup to take care of micromanagement for you.
  • Aid or oppose the various factions in the world while striving for the strength and wealth necessary to simply survive in the harsh desert.
  • Independently developed with no design influences, or alterations dictated by men in gray suits who have never played a game before in their lives.
  • Original game world. There are no fantasy-knock-off cliches. No magic.
  • Realistic physics simulation. PhysX Technology provided under license from NVIDIA Corporation. © 2002-2011 NVIDIA Corporation. All rights reserved.

Here's our progress this month:

Dialogue & AI Programming is at 99%, but the actual content is at 5%.
Stealth Programming is at 90%, but stealth content is at 5%.
Beast Programming is at 80%, while content, again, is at about 5%.
Weather System Programming is almost finished at 95%, but with 0% content.
Pathfinding is at 95% completion.

In a little more detail, here is a list of features we've managed to finish so far, all ready to be released with the next update once the pathfinding is stable enough:

  • Creatures are now mostly coded in. Introducing the Beak Thing, a blind carnivorous giraffe/bird creature.

  • Added stealth!
  • 64-bit version available. 32-bit version will continue, but will get occasional crashes.
  • New dialog/AI hybrid system that takes into account situation details and remembers what you've done in the past.
  • Thugs and bandits can now harass and rob you rather than always attacking on sight. Thugs in town can insult you, then go outside the gates and jump you when you leave town. NPCs can follow and chase you while they talk or threaten you, and know the difference if you are running away.
  • Changes to relation system, fighting someone in the middle of nowhere has very little effect on faction relations. Individuals can be perceived as temporary enemies or allies.
  • A new terrain engine was necessary for the 64bit build. It looks worse than the old one because we've run out of texture units, but only until we upgrade to DX11, then it should look better again.
  • NPC AI now has a schedule. They go to bed at night. Shopkeepers shoo you out of their shop at closing time and lock up for the night.
  • Buildings can now have multiple floors
  • Characters are less disadvantaged by being outnumbered, your lvl 50 warrior can now take out a group of starving bandits without getting mobbed.
  • Basically they will miss more often as he moves around and dodges.
  • More details added to the GUI, including visible calculations for character stats and penalties.
  • Multi-threaded resource loading for smooth creation of models and textures. Shorter loading hiccups when moving around the map.

I love the basic outline of a game that is open ended with a lot of depth. What I don't get is what the basic gameplay will be like. Will it be similar to say.. fallout or even better fallout tactics? Or will it be more like.. EQ clone MMOs? If it is something entirely different could you give or direct us to a detailed description or concept?

As I said the outline is very interesting. It's the perfect setting for another sort of game I've been hoping someone would develop. A PMO. Persistant Multiplayer Online. Sort of like a mini MMO. Or M.U.D. with graphics. An always on server where 20-200 people could hope in and do their thing in a world that is always there waiting for them. Would be especially awesome with mod support. If it ever comes it will be from an Indie developer like yourself. More a labor of love then a corporate money maker.

Sorry I forgot about the date listed on indedb. I need to delay a little longer, as it says in the news sumary: "The first release of the game is scheduled for sometime in late August/September 2011". Hopefully I can get it done by the end of august.

A demo can be downloaded from the games website, but due to hosting issues it is down at the moment. If anyone would be kind enough to upload the demo somewhere it would be very well appreciated.

This actually looks pretty amazing, that fortress especially has gotten me wanting to play it; i cannot resist any game that lets me build and create. Despite your complaints the graphics don't look all that bad. I wonder how customisable it will all be, like painting buildings different colours. And will there be different factional styles of architecture? and how will we be able to buy the game? will it be through paypal or some other method?

Highest Rated (82 agree) 10/10

Kenshi is a very ambitious game, it is as of the moment I'm writing this in a very unfinished state, but it's fun to play and it looks like with more love and care, this will be an absolutely great game.

Therefore I'm voting this a 10, I also bought the game to support the (currently) only developer working on it.

Despite the crashes, the content the game has now, made by only a single developer is very impressive in my opinion.

Thumbs up :)

Lowest Rated (8 agree) 4/10

In it's current state, it deserves a one.

But because it's being updated and because its from one dude, it deserves a 4.

When its finally released, hopefully it will be worth a 10.
I don't see why people are just spamming 10 on this, lets be honest. in its current state, it is pretty sh*t. But we can all agree it WILL turn out great. (Don't hate me for the low rate, i'll re-review it with a high score as the game is being made. Or when its finished.)
