A free-roaming squad based RPG. Focusing on open-ended gameplay features rather than a linear story. Be a trader, a thief, a rebel, a mercenary, a business owner, a doctor, a bandit... the list goes on.

  • Original take on the RTS-RPG hybrid genre. No "hero" characters with artificially stronger stats than everybody else- Every character and NPC you meet is potentially an equal, and has a name, a life.
  • You are not the chosen one. You're not great and powerful. You don't have more 'hitpoints' than everyone else. You are not the center of the universe, and you are not special. Unless you work for it.
  • Freeform gameplay in a seamless game world stretching over 400 square kilometers. The game will never seek to limit you or restrict your personal play style.
  • Variation and possibilities of gameplay. Be good, be evil, be a business man, be a thief, live in a town, live in the desert, join the army, fight the army, travel alone, travel in hordes, build a fortress, raze a city.
  • Purchase and upgrade your own buildings to use as safe fortified havens when things go bad, or use them to start up a business.
  • Carry your wounded squad mates to safety and get them all home alive.
  • Dynamic, ever changing world. Support or hinder whoever you wish, or keep to yourself, the world won't stop moving. This is not just a "game", you are living and surviving in a simulated world.
  • Absolutely no Level-scaling. The world does not level up along with you, and the shops don't change their inventory to only items matching your level. At the start of the game almost everyone will be stronger than you, and survival will always be a struggle.
  • Realistic medical system that affects gameplay. A character with a wounded leg will limp or crawl and slow the party down, wounded arms means you must use your sword one-handed or not at all. Lose an eye and it will affect your field of vision. Blood loss means you can pass out, and the blood will attract predators. Exhaustion affects performance and is increased by equipment weight, weather, blood loss and thirst. Severed limbs will need expensive robotic replacements.
  • Intelligent AI that allows for characters to reason and work towards long-term goals and desires. Squads work together and carry their wounded to safety. Characters can be setup to take care of micromanagement for you.
  • Aid or oppose the various factions in the world while striving for the strength and wealth necessary to simply survive in the harsh desert.
  • Independently developed with no design influences, or alterations dictated by men in gray suits who have never played a game before in their lives.
  • Original game world. There are no fantasy-knock-off cliches. No magic.

Feature-wise, progress for Kenshi has been trickling along slowly this past month or two. But now we finally have some screens of what our artists have been working on while the programmers fix bugs:

^ Scaffolds of a mining town on the border of the Tar Sands. Eventually there will be buildings on the flat tops with bridges connecting the flat-topped islands of rock/ small settlements. The tarry canyon bottoms will be fog-filled, unconnected from the tops and poisonous. So far, this is all procedural.

Now for the latest patches from over the last week, available now on Steam. Remember to import to a new game with new updates:

  • Possible fix for characters vanishing into the void
  • Fixes for the auto-jobs AI getting stuck. If it still happens in any situations I will need someone to send me a savegame for it.
  • Improvement to the "reset positions" import function that will recover missing squads
  • Fix for when engineers stand idle as a result of an unreachable building
  • A fix for the prospecting window
  • A few more small things and stability fixes
  • Fix for 32-bit mode not running

  • Walls now don't affect pathfinding until they are 20% built

  • Fixed characters running on the spot when the navmesh updates

  • AI fixes for the slave camp
  • Another fix for "reset positions" not recovering all squads
  • Fix for character movement overshooting the destination
  • More small fixes for movement and AI
  • Lights don't work until you finish building them

  • 2nd AI fix for movement overshooting the destination
  • Bugfix that was causing increased loading times at startup
  • Small combat animation fix
  • Dogs are less bitey, have more time between attacks

0.74.29 (Experimental opt-in version)

  • Added a mercenary guild that can be hired to guard your base. Need to import a new game to see their shops appear in towns
  • Fixed the "Day" always being 1 in some cases
  • A fix for getting stuck in doors
  • More stability improvements

i just got an idea , if you dont think it is to silly , but i was thinking , if you could meet an orphan or near dead person , and you could adopt him or her , then train that person , well the person would be in your team forever then , and maybe marry someone and have a family :P , and have a place like a guild , so the townspeople will put up notice of some sorts so you can help them with that and get cash , like if some wolves are killing off their plants or something like that , and if you are bored you can make a village , i know about the camp , but to make a village if you get a to big company with you , if you know what im talking about , and if a worker get harrassed by the boss you can kill off the boss or scare him away and a new boss moves in after a while, and kill off those yerks that are evil against the townspeople :@ i will come with more ideas when i come up whit them if that is okey , and i cant wait till you release it , keep up the good work :) , and maybe you have already thought about this , a reputation system , like if you are feared , people hide when you walk down the street , or will be friendly too you , if you are a good guy and help people in need , and if you see a person attacked by a pack of wolves or bandits ,you can save that person , or help the bandits and dubblecross the bandits and kill them off and keep them for yourself :)

aa , i just thought of something , maybe someone have already pointed it out but i was thinking , those bandits , maybe they will have slaves with them , you know to sell on the black market or something like that , and you can free them and you can ask them to join your team , or recruit them as shopkeeper , just an idea i had , yea i was thinking about something ells too , that you can send out one of your people to buy food and water from a town and you can wait for them to come back or medical supplies , or would that be to easy ?

Kenshi is a very ambitious game, it is as of the moment I'm writing this in a very unfinished state, but it's fun to play and it looks like with more love and care, this will be an absolutely great game.

Therefore I'm voting this a 10, I also bought the game to support the (currently) only developer working on it.

Despite the crashes, the content the game has now, made by only a single developer is very impressive in my opinion.

In it's current state, it deserves a one.

But because it's being updated and because its from one dude, it deserves a 4.

When its finally released, hopefully it will be worth a 10.
I don't see why people are just spamming 10 on this, lets be honest. in its current state, it is pretty sh*t. But we can all agree it WILL turn out great. (Don't hate me for the low rate, i'll re-review it with a high score as the game is being made. Or when its finished.)
