A free-roaming squad based RPG. Focusing on open-ended gameplay features rather than a linear story. Be a trader, a thief, a rebel, a mercenary, a business owner, a doctor, a bandit... the list goes on.

  • Original take on the RTS-RPG hybrid genre. No "hero" characters with artificially stronger stats than everybody else- Every character and NPC you meet is potentially an equal, and has a name, a life.
  • You are not the chosen one. You're not great and powerful. You don't have more 'hitpoints' than everyone else. You are not the center of the universe, and you are not special. Unless you work for it.
  • Freeform gameplay in a seamless game world stretching over 400 square kilometers. The game will never seek to limit you or restrict your personal play style.
  • Variation and possibilities of gameplay. Be good, be evil, be a business man, be a thief, live in a town, live in the desert, join the army, fight the army, travel alone, travel in hordes, build a fortress, raze a city.
  • Purchase and upgrade your own buildings to use as safe fortified havens when things go bad, or use them to start up a business.
  • Carry your wounded squad mates to safety and get them all home alive.
  • Dynamic, ever changing world. Support or hinder whoever you wish, or keep to yourself, the world won't stop moving. This is not just a "game", you are living and surviving in a simulated world.
  • Absolutely no Level-scaling. The world does not level up along with you, and the shops don't change their inventory to only items matching your level. At the start of the game almost everyone will be stronger than you, and survival will always be a struggle.
  • Realistic medical system that affects gameplay. A character with a wounded leg will limp or crawl and slow the party down, wounded arms means you must use your sword one-handed or not at all. Lose an eye and it will affect your field of vision. Blood loss means you can pass out, and the blood will attract predators. Exhaustion affects performance and is increased by equipment weight, weather, blood loss and thirst. Severed limbs will need expensive robotic replacements.
  • Intelligent AI that allows for characters to reason and work towards long-term goals and desires. Squads work together and carry their wounded to safety. Characters can be setup to take care of micromanagement for you.
  • Aid or oppose the various factions in the world while striving for the strength and wealth necessary to simply survive in the harsh desert.
  • Independently developed with no design influences, or alterations dictated by men in gray suits who have never played a game before in their lives.
  • Original game world. There are no fantasy-knock-off cliches. No magic.
  • Realistic physics simulation. PhysX Technology provided under license from NVIDIA Corporation. © 2002-2011 NVIDIA Corporation. All rights reserved.

Forest Biome slavery slavery
Blog RSS Feed Report abuse Latest News: Update 0.74.0 "So Big" Experimental

3 comments by Koomatzu on May 12th, 2015

The latest update is now out on Steam! To download it, you will need to opt in to Steam Experimental.

0.74.0 “SO BIG”

This is a super unstable version, it’s not ready for release but because there hasn’t been a release for a long time I’m putting it out in the “Experimental” branch so people who are interested can play around with it. If I try to fix everything first then I’ll just keep delaying it more and more until the players lynch me. If you’d prefer to play it when more stable, we recommend waiting a couple of weeks after patching.

RECOMMENDATIONS:

  • Keep the “view distance” low, it has a drastic effect on performance. This is caused by the terrain engine, it’s getting fixed in a future update
  • Keeping the population size low will help performance too
  • Run the game fullscreen, disable civilian NPCs, turn off shadows will all improve the frame rate
  • Running the game in DirectX11 mode has a better frame rate

SLAVERY!

  • There is a slave camp in the west. Any newly captured slaves will be sent to the camp. Escape attempts will be met with harpoons. Intruders will be captured.
  • Slavers strip slaves and shave their heads. Confiscated items are put into storage. Slaves are kept in cages and made to work in the mines during the day.
  • Slaves have shackles locked onto their feet. They can’t be removed unless lock-picked or broken with tools.
  • Stolen items are now tagged and the original owner can recognise them
  • More limits to trading/looting things at a distance, can’t take items from other peoples storage without looting it directly
  • Disguises- If you wear the uniform of another faction, NPCs will think you are one of them. Until you get recognised
  • NPC towns can have gates, gate guards that challenge you on approach, and recognise unauthorised intruders and escaping prisoners

OTHER FEATURES

  • New race added, the Shek (People keep complaining that we are adding races instead of fixing bugs- The guy who makes the races is an artist, he’s not the same person as the ones fixing bugs!)
  • New character editor that uses morph targets for the facial features instead of bones. Looks better, gives more control, and has better in-game performance.
  • Character models overhauled, male and female faces look much better, less piggy.
  • New GUI re-skin and overhaul.
  • Turrets are faster at aiming. NPC guards can man turrets.
  • Lots of upgrades and features added to the construction set
  • Support added for level mods (to add towns and stuff to the map)
  • Support added for physics object attachment to characters and animals
  • AI system tune up- better performance and no task oscillation bugs
  • Added auto-job for the corpse furnace (careful, they’ll burn any loot too)

RENDERERING

  • DX11 mode (DX9 still supported, but will look crappier and run slower)
  • Lights! Night time is darker, buildings can have lights mounted on them
  • New global illumination ambient lighting model, and BRDF material shaders

FIXES OF NOTE

  • Improved the terrain collision accuracy
  • NPCs won’t loot someone who’s being carried
  • Fixed the bug where guards wouldn’t protect you from bandits
  • Ragdolls are now created on the background thread
  • Fixed the invisible ragdoll bug
  • Fixed missing upper body combat animations
  • Fixed harpoons getting stuck in mid-air
  • Stopped large animals trying to attack targets inside buildings

NEXT UPDATES

  • Will be focused on bug-fixing and stabilisation
  • Will have a new movement system to avoid the characters getting stuck, flickering, and random framerate drops caused by Havok, until then we’ve worked some quick-fixes into the current release to help things as best we can
  • After the performance issues are sorted out the wall placement problems will be looked at

CURRENT BUGS:

  • The gui is not 100% finished and full of cosmetic bugs
  • The pathfinder is super broken right now (movement flickers, getting stuck, no collision, and performance drags) because we aren’t quite finished with a re-write, it will be updated properly asap
  • Still needs more features for the lights, like more techs, types, power-related light brightness and stat penalties for working in the darkness, personal lanterns
  • Still needs more ways of getting enslaved
  • Performance is terrible, it will improve drastically with 2 future updates: The pathfinder (ETA: 2-3 weeks) and the terrain system fix (ETA: 1-2 months)

Looking good for an early version! Character seems to move snappy. Love the character customization what making your guy. I am getting a LOT of crashes though. Enough that I can't really properly poke around at this build. But it was cool enough that I am looking forward to the next!

I think you shouldn't have named the game Kenshi; too much distraction to the Mortal Kombat character Kenshi.
Anyways, i hope this game turns into something bigger than even you tought.

Also, if we download the game now... can we just play this beta version, without having to buy it but also not able to upgrade it? Because this version itself is just VERY GOOD and I don't have much in my pockets if you know what I mean.

It's really just his choice, he could name it "gayfish little pony ******* 3" if he wanted to xD
Kenshi doesn't really have to do anything with the MK character, he wasn't even an important one at that, so I don't really see how there can be too much distraction, certainly didn't distract me hehe.
Kenshi basically means swordsman(Kenshi the MK character is a swordsman so they used Kenshi because it sounds like a cool name), the game has a perfect name IMO, because of obvious reasons.
In the money issue, I don't think 10 bucks should be a problem for anyone, I mean.. you have a job right? If you don't, then how are you able to pay for internet? Do you live with your parents? Do your parents give you allowance? etc, etc. What's the deal ya know?
+ Paying for the game really helps in its development, so the sooner you scrap that money together and pay for it, the sooner it'll go into Beta and then you can play that :)
I think he'll update it every once in a while and get new demo versions out as well, but really, have you seen what's on the demo? No recruiting or getting higher than level 20, both of those(mainly the first one) are pretty damn important to the game I'd say :P

The name didn't distract me, but it distracts youtube and google. :D

As for the deal, well, I am 15 years old, that's the deal... -_-

The demo has a big world and all I want from the game is a few beating, the rest is just the sauce of the food, but it would be good to have them too, and that's why I'm asking if I can keep the demo.

I'm curious. You talk about the large game world and having your own buildings or wilderness bases. I'm curious. Will the large world hold resources used by your or npc business and factions? Or will that all be less RTS and more rpg were what you need is assumed and you just pay for it with gold gotten from enemies or quests?

Highest Rated (82 agree) 10/10

Kenshi is a very ambitious game, it is as of the moment I'm writing this in a very unfinished state, but it's fun to play and it looks like with more love and care, this will be an absolutely great game.

Therefore I'm voting this a 10, I also bought the game to support the (currently) only developer working on it.

Despite the crashes, the content the game has now, made by only a single developer is very impressive in my opinion.

Thumbs up :)

Lowest Rated (9 agree) 4/10

In it's current state, it deserves a one.

But because it's being updated and because its from one dude, it deserves a 4.

When its finally released, hopefully it will be worth a 10.
I don't see why people are just spamming 10 on this, lets be honest. in its current state, it is pretty sh*t. But we can all agree it WILL turn out great. (Don't hate me for the low rate, i'll re-review it with a high score as the game is being made. Or when its finished.)
