* The 58th year of Shouwa, early summer
It's June, and the summer heat has arrived earlier than it does most years.
By day there are crickets, and by night there are cicadas.

We're in Hinamizawa, a small village in the countryside.
There are fewer than two thousand people here. But every year, there is an event.

This event is a mysterious death.
(The series has run from 1979 to 1983)

On a certain day in June, someone dies, and someone else goes missing.
The series of deaths is connected to the upheaval surrounding the dam construction project.
A murder case that was covered up is being reenacted.
Is it a conspiracy? A coincidence? Or perhaps a curse?

Someone who was supposed to be there isn't.
Someone who wasn't supposed to be there is.

Someone who was alive last night is dead now.
And someone who is here right now isn't alive.

So, there is no way to avert tragedy. There is no choice but to give up.
But don't give up.

Only you can stand up to this.

* Higurashi When They Cry is a sound novel.

The music, backgrounds and characters work together to create a world that is the stage of a novel for the user to read. They laugh and cry and get angry. The user takes the point of view of the protagonist to experience the story.

An important point to note here is the absence of what is commonly called choices and forks. This means that you are freed from the tedious saving and loading, the searching for events and routes, and can instead enjoy the story from the beginning to the end.

Nevertheless, this is a game, not a novel.
As the player, you will be able to unravel the mystery surrounding the events in the game as the scenarios unfold.

You can ponder on the nature of the mystery by yourself when you're on the train, you can discuss it with your friends, you can search for clues on the Internet or you can even file complaints on the circle's website. The choice is yours.

This is Higurashi When They Cry, a serial murder themed sound novel that doesn't offer you any choices, but does offer you the opportunity to search for the truth yourself. Will you fear? Will you become engrossed? Will you face the challenge? Only you can decide how to enjoy the story.

Higurashi When They Cry takes place during June 1983, at a fictional rural village called Hinamizawa, which has a population of approximately 2000. The main character, Keiichi Maebara, moves to Hinamizawa and befriends his new classmates Rena Ryugu, Mion Sonozaki, Rika Furude, and Satoko Hojo. Keiichi joins their after-school club activities, which consist mostly of card and board games (and punishment games for the loser, usually him.) Hinamizawa appears to be a normal, peaceful, rural village to Keiichi. However, the tranquility abruptly ends after the annual Watanagashi Festival, a celebration to commemorate and give thanks to the local god, Oyashiro-sama. Keiichi learns that every year for the past four years, one person has been murdered and another has gone missing on the day of the Watanagashi Festival. Keiichi himself soon becomes drawn into the strange events surrounding the Watanagashi Festival and Oyashiro-sama.

From what I hear, this is sort of game-lite in terms of player interactivity. I don't NORMALLY have a big problem with that, but it would be nice if this game came with a demo so I could try it and see if it was to my tastes. It sounds interesting, but at that price, twenty bucks is steep for a "maybe".

To be clear: There is very little player-interactivity in this game. It's pretty much just like reading a book, but with pictures, and cool music. But of course, it's a very gripping story, so I hope people will enjoy it for that reason, and not write it off simply because it lacks gameplay.

If you want to try out the game, have this free demo that includes the complete first "episode" of the story:

First off, Hirurashi is an amazing game. I would recomend it to everyone, however I would only recomend purchasing it on here if the funds support the original developer

As I understand it, 07th Expansion receives royalties from sales of releases from MangaGamer. Therefore, there should be nothing to worry about. :-)
