* The 58th year of Shouwa, early summer
It's June, and the summer heat has arrived earlier than it does most years.
By day there are crickets, and by night there are cicadas.

We're in Hinamizawa, a small village in the countryside.
There are fewer than two thousand people here. But every year, there is an event.

This event is a mysterious death.
(The series has run from 1979 to 1983)

On a certain day in June, someone dies, and someone else goes missing.
The series of deaths is connected to the upheaval surrounding the dam construction project.
A murder case that was covered up is being reenacted.
Is it a conspiracy? A coincidence? Or perhaps a curse?

Someone who was supposed to be there isn't.
Someone who wasn't supposed to be there is.

Someone who was alive last night is dead now.
And someone who is here right now isn't alive.

So, there is no way to avert tragedy. There is no choice but to give up.
But don't give up.

Only you can stand up to this.

* Higurashi When They Cry is a sound novel.

The music, backgrounds and characters work together to create a world that is the stage of a novel for the user to read. They laugh and cry and get angry. The user takes the point of view of the protagonist to experience the story.

An important point to note here is the absence of what is commonly called choices and forks. This means that you are freed from the tedious saving and loading, the searching for events and routes, and can instead enjoy the story from the beginning to the end.

Nevertheless, this is a game, not a novel.
As the player, you will be able to unravel the mystery surrounding the events in the game as the scenarios unfold.

You can ponder on the nature of the mystery by yourself when you're on the train, you can discuss it with your friends, you can search for clues on the Internet or you can even file complaints on the circle's website. The choice is yours.

This is Higurashi When They Cry, a serial murder themed sound novel that doesn't offer you any choices, but does offer you the opportunity to search for the truth yourself. Will you fear? Will you become engrossed? Will you face the challenge? Only you can decide how to enjoy the story.

Higurashi When They Cry takes place during June 1983, at a fictional rural village called Hinamizawa, which has a population of approximately 2000. The main character, Keiichi Maebara, moves to Hinamizawa and befriends his new classmates Rena Ryugu, Mion Sonozaki, Rika Furude, and Satoko Hojo. Keiichi joins their after-school club activities, which consist mostly of card and board games (and punishment games for the loser, usually him.) Hinamizawa appears to be a normal, peaceful, rural village to Keiichi. However, the tranquility abruptly ends after the annual Watanagashi Festival, a celebration to commemorate and give thanks to the local god, Oyashiro-sama. Keiichi learns that every year for the past four years, one person has been murdered and another has gone missing on the day of the Watanagashi Festival. Keiichi himself soon becomes drawn into the strange events surrounding the Watanagashi Festival and Oyashiro-sama.

I am a bit confused - from what I remember, the Manga and Anime are based on a game. Is this the game or is this written after the Manga/Anime?

This is the original game that the anime and manga were based on.

I'm pretty sure the manga and anime are based on this game, and this game's sequels.

Yes, all four "episodes" of the Question Arcs are included in this release (Onikakushi-hen, Watanagashi-hen, Tatarigoroshi-hen, Himatsubushi-hen).

The translation for the first arc is unfortunately rather poor,
get through this though and you'll be happily surprised by how much Mangagamer got their act together for Kai.

Why is the art completly awful?

Yirba Sep 28 2012, 2:51pm replied:

As an indie game, the artwork was drawn by the writer of the story, as opposed to a professional artist. All I'll say is, although the artwork may turn you off at first, you kinda get used to it, and it becomes less of a problem. Indeed, most of the people I know who have played through the game aren't too bothered about the art anymore. At the end of the day, it's the story that's important.
