While you were battling the evil forces of D'Sparil, the other Serpent Riders were busy sowing the seeds of destruction in other dimensions. One such dimension is the decaying world where Hexen takes place. A world littered with the mangled corpses of nonbelievers and inhabited by the undead followers that executed them. Only three humans &endash; a warrior, a mage and a cleric &endash; have escaped the leaders' vicious spell. Now these brave souls have sworn to crush the evil regime that threatens to destroy the world forever. Separated upon entering the mystical portal, the three are forced to attempt on their own what they had hoped to do together: find Korax's stronghold, destroy him and restore order in the physical world.
Ah, the hexen... nothing about heretic, but a good game indeed. the 3 options player is a wellcome addon from heretic and, i must add, i miss Corvus working here. maybe i´m becomming old (and I do for a long time) but this kind of games, the old school, is better than the overresouced new shooters of today.
Hexen has the advantage of being one of the most unique games that came out, it made swinging a axe or mace for the first time a joy for many people who owned a Nintendo 64.
It had a nice variety of locations and enemies, and a unique set of weapons for each class that added to the replay value. Theres quite a few secret areas to and its gotten quite a few good mods to improve the game further. The bosses feel tougher and better designed than the Doom 1, 2 counterparts.
Yes it's hard to not like this game even considering how old it is now.
There are disadvantages,
Like you could want more assets into the game, so that theres more furniture and other props...
Fights where rather drawn out, ettins took some punishment, centaurs had this shield that makes them invulnerable, even once you get stronger weapons.
Directionless levels meant wandering around alot with little idea of how to proceed although that did add to the length of the game.
4 weapons per class isn't that much, game could have used atleast 1 or 2 more for each of the classes...and such the game feels a little tactically weak without secondary attacks for your 4 weapons. Mods fix that though. Community have added alot to this game.
I hate to do this but hell this is my favorite game.
Hexen brought much to the modding community of the Doom 2 engine.
Like poly objects; Action Code Scripting; jumping; new map format. All this won`t work in Doom at all, unless you have ZDoom or any modern port).
I don`t understand why is this game not liked for example like Heretic that everyone says it`s too much like Doom. Well this game is NOT like Doom at all!
Besides this game is really awesome for modding. First of all Textures are best among all ever made for a game in Doom engine and there are lots of them. Which explains why I don`t use custom textures for Hexen. :3
