I was wondering.. Does the Unity Engine support destruction? As in shooting physical holes in ships instead of creating preprogrammed particle effects and damage states?
I must say, the game looks beautiful already! I really can't wait to see the game in it's full glory years from now!

It can through mesh deformation. However, it gets very expensive with the added poly information for each modified mesh. We have played with a few versions and it really can be neat to watch, but can slow the game down a bit if the mesh changes are too detailed. The trick is making the LOD shifts stay in sync with the displayed damage since all of the meshes of the LOD will have to reflect the same damage level.

So just generic damage levels intended then?

Yeah, like any other pirate game, but I think it'll be focalized damage areas, so for example if you get shot on the rear of your ship the entire battle, you won't lose the front of it.
