Half-Life: Subtitles MOD 4.0 ALPHA - Development progress update #05.

Today, let's take a look at some FX.

Particle system (based on HL1 Battlegrounds mod particle system) has been implemented. In the video we can see current test version of hit-impact blood splash for both humans and aliens.

In future we will use this particle system to replace almost every 2D sprite used for FX. There will be particle based fire, explosions, smoke, water, sparks, teleport effects etc.

Since large number of particles can overkill older (and I mean really, really old) CPUs, there will be three options, allowing the player to set quality of these particle effects:

  1. LOW = Particles will be mostly disabled, game will use 2D sprites (lowest quality, best performance)
  2. MEDIUM = Limited particles. There will be a fine amount of particles but they won't be highly detailed. (normal quality, medium performance impact)
  3. HIGH = Full particles. There will be a lot of particles everywhere, and they will use the highest render settings. (best visual quality, highest performance impact)

BTW: Thanks to BUzer ( The old HL1 shadows are back, and like everything else you can enable or disable them ;)

Games don't start to suck when they get old; if they suck, they suck from the start ;)
Old games are just old...

This game is increadible. Half-Life has an SDK available for easily programming mods, as well as a mod managment device built into the client for simplicity of changing mods. Open-Source modding enviorments are a great way for companies to make the game popular and interesting. Anyone can create their own game based off of Half-Life's work (which I doubt anyone would like to program the entire thing). It also has an SDK and server for the Linux enviorment (most Open-Source Operating Systems have emulatory support for Linux now days, personally I prefer FreeBSD for security. Linux emulation makes this possible). The game itself, Half-Life is awesome. Gameplay length is great, I remember the first time I played it, I thought it was almost over, the time that I was drawn up the machine lift, I thought, "I'm up top already? Well the game is pretty short, but it was a great game". Then I found out I actually have to break through the numerous troops and enter a subdwelling, and then the game is just starting even then. Multi-player is great, I should not have to go into levels.

Run. Think. Shoot. Live.In Half-Life, players assume the role of the protagonist, Dr. Gordon Freeman, a recent MIT graduate in theoretical physics, and also a recent employee at Black Mesa. After an experiment that goes horribly awry when an unexpected Resonance Cascade (an apparently completely fictitious occurrence) rips dimensional seams that devastate the facility, Gordon must fight to escape the now alien-infested facility as creatures from another world — known as Xen — subsequently enter…
