No amount of polys will solve the linear lighting shade of the models. Unreal (competing 1998 fps game) has lower polys but a better point lighting model for 3d meshes that showcase more volume on the models.

Yeah the difference in lighting between HL1 and UT bugged me for ages - seems a massive shame Valve never bothered updating the lighting in the game engine :/
