Detailed models
Detailed textures on regular textures (kinda hard to spot)
New Detailed HUD.
Sure, it's not totally modern graphics. but it's an nice comparison, and I had to say something about it.
it isn't modern graphics if it doesn't have bloom and shiny water, and the high 'detailed' models lack the definitive detail the original models have
Well, There have already been detailed models, textures, huds, Shiny water and bloom on hl1 for a while now.

No amount of polys will solve the linear lighting shade of the models. Unreal (competing 1998 fps game) has lower polys but a better point lighting model for 3d meshes that showcase more volume on the models.
Yeah the difference in lighting between HL1 and UT bugged me for ages - seems a massive shame Valve never bothered updating the lighting in the game engine :/
