You are an old-school level designer, or just decided to become one, but tired of limitations of Valve Hammer Editor? Radiant seems to be too complex and unusual? Wanna use new cool features? Seeking for a user-friendly level editor for Half-Life, Quake, Quake II, or Quake III? It's time to test our new level editor, J.A.C.K., previously known as Jackhammer, in action! News, updates, tutorials, discussions and much more.

Description

Jackhammer is a brand new level editor for games with a quake-style BSP architecture (Half-Life, Quake, Quake 2). The aim is to develop a convenient cross-platform tool capable of incorporating the best features of existing editors, such as Valve Hammer Editor, Q3Radiant and others. Despite Quake and Half-Life having been released a long time ago, the large community have arisen around, still developing mods and games on their bases. However the existing editors suffer from fundamental disadvantages their users are well familiar with. Jackhammer does aspire to be the universal level design tool for classic games. But not only the classics! The editor shall become a key development tool for the Volatile3D II engine, that is why its second name is Volatile Development Kit.

Spheres can be made via vertex manipulation and cutting brushes.

Make Sure you have anti aliasing turned off and Nvidia/ATi(AMD) Enforcements turned off

id's Radiant Editor doesn't like Anti Aliasing So JackHammer Mightn't ether

Hi there :)
I tried Jackhammer for some time now. First of all, it's very nice to see that there are some people who still create tools for quake based games, so thanks a lot to the developers of such tools!

As you might know there are several other thirdparty editors for Quakes map format, respectively hammer clones, and I have to admit that I've never found any of them as good as the original. I dont say that because they lack awesome new features, no, they just lacked simple features of the original Hammer editor, which seem so important to me, that I dont even bother to use anything else, no matter how awesome it might be otherwise.

Yes of course, it is still an alpha version and I surely dont want to offend anybody by just throwing mean trollkiddygarbagelanguage at you, so please just take it as my personal opinion.

So, here is what I am missing in Jackhammer most at the moment:

- in Hammer I am able to drag the 2d views by pressing Space+LeftMouseButton, in Jackhammer its the MiddleMouseButton only and I cant seem to modify the hotkeys yet
- a possibility to adjust the color/brightness of the grid
- the possibility to move selected vertices in vertex mode by pressing the arrow-keys or moving them directly in the 3d view with the LeftMouseButton

Thats all for now I guess.
Continue the good work!

Thank you for the opinion. I do my best to make Jackhammer more convenient for VHE users even than the original VHE.

Btw, it is possible to adjust the color of the grid in Jackhammer. Just open View->Color Schemes->Custom, then edit colors related to 2D grid items. You can either make them brigher/dimmer or change their colors completely. Note that almost any color can be changed there.

My antivirus program tells me that the program is unsafe and is a Trojan. Is this a false positive? To be more specific it says Trojan.Dropper.Gen.

OMG, it looks good, even Linux version is present... Thank you, excellent work!
Although, alternative editors for Half-Life and Quake are numerous, pity, that so fewness of alternatives for Source Engine :( I'm hoping, Source support will appear in Jackhammer, sooner or later...

If your FGD is ok (or you use the one came with Jackhammer), then you probably search in a wrong place. Func entities are usually brush entities. Right-click on selected brush and go to "Tie to..." menu. Or, click "toEntity" button and select the entity class from the list.

This editor seems nice, but is missing an important (and simple) feature.

After I create a brush and then create an adjacent brush, I expect it to have the same height and position properties of the first brush. For example, if I am drawing a basic room using 4 walls, it'd be nice if the 3 remaining walls would have the same height and position properties of the previously selected brush. The Hammer editor for Half Life 2 has this functionality. Can this be implemented?

It is already implemented, but I don't remember in which version.

Hi, I am using Jackhammer to create a half life 1 map. I have created the bsp file and can run it through Jackhammer. However, when I look at the maps for multiplayer it does not show there. I know that it is in the correct folder (C:\Sierra\Half-Life\valve\maps). Any ideas
