Half-Life: Opposing Force is an expansion pack for Valve Software's science fiction first-person shooter video game Half-Life. The game was developed by Gearbox Software and published by Sierra Entertainment on November 1, 1999. Opposing Force is the first expansion for Half-Life and was first announced in April 1999. Randy Pitchford, the lead designer on the game, later noted that he believed Gearbox was selected to develop Opposing Force because Valve wanted to concentrate on their future projects. Over the course of development, Gearbox brought in a variety of outside talent from other areas of the video games industry to help bolster various aspects of design. Opposing Force returns to the same setting as Half-Life, but instead portrays the events from the perspective of a U.S. Marine, one of the enemy characters in the original game. The player character, Adrian Shephard.

The campaign is almost as good as HL's but the multiplayer is just the icing on the cake, Oh but the the cake is lie... oh well.

I agree with many of players who say this is a good game. It is.
Moreover, it is a MOD, which was very successful amongst the fans of the original Half-Life. This is the most awesome to know, meeting this game on the Mod Database once.

This game made my childhood, and did it much more than official and dusty Blue Shift. Not speaking about Counter-Strike, as I personally love single player, so opinions may differ in this case.

Despite there were many bugs, I cannot be objective here, sorry. Not today, give me a break, please. :)

The protagonist isnt as great a Gordon Freeman, but Corporal Adrian Shephard is not bad at all.

But if he and Gordon had cross paths, things would have ended up badly.

Better than the original HL in many aspects, particularly thanks to the numerous new enemies, weapons and mechanics. But they could have been much more exploited:
- The same enemies come over and over again, while using HL's enemies as well would have added some diversity.
- Many weapons are useless due to the huge amount of ammunitions and to the lack of dedicated fights for these weapons.
- The ropes, the "grapple", the engineers are used like 2 times in the game... Instead, several "riddles" are the same as in HL.
Starting from the sewers, several places are quite boring. The climax is reached with the final boss, one of the worst and easiest I ever played.
Still, very nice game, great addition to HL, containing enough nice new stuff to disappoint because of the lack of exploitation.

Big and long game expansion for Half-Life - lots of new weapons, Xen aliens and unique levels. This is how game expansion should be!

I have just played this game, it's almost as good as Half-Life, it clearly deserves an high rating! Being part of the Army is awesome, you have new weapons like a SAW M249 Light Machine Gun that will tear anything apart, an M40A1 Sniper Rifle, a Displacer Cannon that resembles the BFG from Doom and can also teleport you to Xen, two new cool alien weapons and a badass new gun, the Desert Eagle with Laser Sights! You can also use Radios to contact your comrades! There are new enemies like the Black Ops and Race X aliens. You encounter lots of friendly marines plus two new classes, Medics and Engineers! Medics can heal you and your teammates and Engineers are your "lockpicks", they use their Torches to destroy doors! New Security Guards, aka the "Otis" class, fat security guards but with better aim and new weapons! Lots of scripted sequences and challenging levels. You will also visit familiar areas seen by Gordon in the original Half-Life! Graphics didn't change that much but the Soldiers models are very upgraded and they look better than the original ones. Sounds are the same except for new creepy sounds for the Race X aliens and new weapons! This game contains more creepy areas than in Half-Life, for example "Crush Depth" and "Vicarious Reality" where you visit the Biodome Complex, and the worst of them all, the Voltigore Darkened Sewers under Black Mesa! They will be your worst nightmare! Everything is well done, Gearbox Software is an awesome company! The boss battle isn't incredibly hard but this is good, I don't like hard bosses! You get an awesome ending after killing the Gene Worm. The Boot Camp (aka the Training version of Opposing Force) is one of the best parts of the game. You will be trained in the Santego Military Base, it really resembles movies like "Full Metal Jacket" and it is awesome! A really worthy addition to an already awesome series!
