Hacknet v1.23 (Current Version)

Development News

Hacknet is back in full development - in fact is has been for a long time now! Lots of new features, new missions, new programs (new everything) are in. The story now splits into multiple paths, that are completely different. It's making development take a lot longer, but should improve the game significantly. The paths play quite differently - Hacknet watches your actions and you'll end up with a different game depending on what attitude you take towards things. It's exciting times!

instead of using the current network map, have you thought of using a address list?
I used to play another game of this style called Uplink. It used both a list and a net map. though, I usually ended up using the list as I gained more IPs

Thanks for the suggestion - Uplink was one of the major inspirations for the game. I was considering a list, but ended up going with a map, mostly because it looked better, and relationships between nodes were more obvious. I'll consider adding a list mode in a future version if i can find a good way to do it.

I have the same problem with FTPbounce.

Executing it with 'exe FTPBounce 21' says that that's the wrong port for the program.

I noticed that it's available on two servers (the one where you're told to get it, and the mission one), though I can't download it from the mission one.

I experience Crashes when starting single player! When I move the cursor to netmap, the game crashes. What should I do?

Hm, that's interesting. Can you try again and let me know at what point exactly it happens? (I.E: Mousing over a node in the netmap - that could be a problem).

Yes, I'm mousing over a node in the netmap - the game is crashed.
And I have the same problem with FTPbounce.

Wow, just finished the singleplayer and i really loved it. I had no problem with the executables, all worked fine for me. That goes for the tracer and the virus too.

One thing that kinda annoyed me is that you can't go back in a filesystem using a console command. Tried commands like "cd\", "cd..", "back", pressing backspace, anything that i could think of. If there is actually a way to do it, except clicking with the mouse, i guess i was too dumb to find it.

Another thing that i would like to do is remove specific files without having to write down the whole thing. You know, like writing "rm Se*" and delete all the files that start with "Se".

Also, some emails were longer than the available part of the screen and they were messing with the hud. Some scroll feature for them would be nice.

A similar problem with the above exists when writing huge commands, like having to delete a file with a large name. You couldn't see what you were writing, so if there was doubt you had to delete the command and write it again. Having the console below so it covers the entire screen could solve this issue.

Anyway, i wrote too much. Fact is that i liked this way too much and i really hope that you will continue developing it into a full polished title with more features etc.

Thanks for making it. Keep it up.

Hey, thanks for the feedback!
You actually can go back a directory using "cd .." (you need the space there). I think it explains that in the tutorial too - I might try and make it a bit more clear.

It sounds like you were playing on a pretty small resolution - the game was designed to run optimally at 1280x800 - I'm guessing yours was a bit lower than that? I didn't really spend much tie optimizing for smaller (and in some cases, larger) screens - so i can do some work there.

I'm glad you liked it. Thanks!

You can also use Tab to finish out a filename. Just start typing the beginning of a file, hit tab, and the rest of the name will be filled out for you as long as nothing else matches what you've typed so far.
