Gentrieve 2 is a "Metroid"-style 3D action game featuring completely random & customizable worlds.

The year is 3080. Mass Generators are creating everything, everywhere. However, thieves often steal Mass Generators in hopes of creating robot armies & fortresses. Thieves are terrible programmers, though, and their creations become uncontrollably hostile & fortresses wildly convoluted. It is your job to clear out these fortresses & return the faulty Mass Generators. Be warned, when the Mass Generator is taken offline, the fortress will soon implode!

Grabbed this earlier, gave it a good couple of hours.

Excellent, really is. I like the look of everything, very.... atmospheric, which does remind me of the older Metroid games, particularly the first one.

Even more impressive is the world generator though, THAT is amazing. Big, complicated, interesting areas fulla stuff. Enemies are challenging and have interesting patterns, as do the bosses. Though I note that bosses seem to get caught up on geometry at times, the third or fourth one I faced did that, and I was able to finish it by just standing and firing.

One small problem I noticed quickly: The missile and super-missile doors look way too similar to each other (on the map as well), one being green, and the other one being slightly brighter green. I'll often go to open one, and it turns out I need the OTHER missile type, thus I've wasted one.

Game runs well, though I did have one crash during a boss fight, twin boss fight, it crashed about 10 seconds after I entered that room.

Also, does the game generate more than just one save point? I've found only one so far, and it can be a pain running aaaaaallllll that way back to use it.

I'll see about increasing the contrast for missile doors.

If you get that crash again, please share it so i can fix it :-)

The game should generate a save room about every 7 "normal" rooms... Check the map for unexplored doors - out might hide another save room!

Turns out the launcher just appeared below all other windows with no hint that it did, apologies for a false bug report.

Gentrieve 2 is a fascinating experiment in procedural generation. Gameplay is 3D Metroid-style -- a room-based FPS platformer -- but genre is less important here than the ideas the game presents and the mood it effectively sets. In the style of roguelikes and dungeon crawlers, each play-through provides a unique experience through random generation, right down to the texture of the walls. The aesthetic is refined (dark, retro-futuristic) and I'm constantly propelled by my curiosity and eagerness…
