Gentrieve 2 is a "Metroid"-style 3D action game featuring completely random & customizable worlds.

The year is 3080. Mass Generators are creating everything, everywhere. However, thieves often steal Mass Generators in hopes of creating robot armies & fortresses. Thieves are terrible programmers, though, and their creations become uncontrollably hostile & fortresses wildly convoluted.It is your job to clear out these fortresses & return the faulty Mass Generators. Be warned, when the Mass Generator is taken offline, the fortress will soon implode!

Hello fellow swimmers & good news, Spermination has been updated! Of course, you always want to be shooting with the freshest, so grab the latest either from IndieGameStand or BMT Micro!

v1.4 brings fixes to joystick controls (should hopefully fix looking around on all types of controllers). Oculus Rift updates have also been made -- GUI elements shouldn't overlap incorrectly, among other fixes.

There was a rather large balancing tweak made for v1.0, so if you are running an older version, you really want to update as prices were changed & damage tweaks were made.

I've just bought the game from Gamers Gate but cannot get the game to work. I get the message "Failed to create display. LWJGL Exception: Failed to set display mode (-2)." My video card is an Nvidia GTX 560 TI and I'm running Windows 7

What did you have set for your graphics settings when starting the game? Have you tried running in a windowed mode or full screen? For some reason, the engine I am using cannot initiate a 3D window to display the game...

1920x1080, 32bpp, 59hz, 16x, Fullscreen and VSync

Hmm, have you tried a different resolution? Perhaps try windowing it at 1024x768 first, "display mode (-2)" may refer to the resolution.

I'm afraid that also didn't work. Could it be that my version of Windows 7 is 64 bit? Whatever, it's looking like I've wasted my money. I know it was cheap but that's not the point. If I'm going to give money away, I'd rather it was to charity!

I've tried that but I'm afraid that didn't work either. But thankyou for trying to help. I've bought a lot of indie games, especially since Gamersgate have been doing all their cheap bundle deals and I've built up quite a collection now (not just indie games but ALL games and I have most of the top rated games, new and old - I'm housebound thru disabilty, so the computer is my lifeline and has stopped me going completely mad!). This is the only one I havent been able to get working!

Well, I've been gone for a very long time due to excessive amounts of work, but I've recently downloaded v1.11, and I have to say I love it. Every change has only made the game better and more playable (I am sad about my box-fu being nerfed), though I have noticed a few little issues. Firstly, the glow effects seem to be slightly broken. When active, they can often be seen through objects, and also glitch the map so that walls often have black squares in the center of them (I'll post a screenshot in the thread). Also, when you land after a jump, you seem to bounce forward slightly in the direction you were moving before the jump began, which is slightly annoying when yo make a jump moving north, turn during it and go south, then land and end up bouncing slightly north again.

Aside from that, it's great! Though regrettably I'll probably be unable to do the "raceone" challenge due to term projects and exams being due soon.

That is actually how I originally designed it to look, but then the flash went around the door icon (which I think looks better), but I'm not sure why that happens (or why it reverts sometimes back to drawing over the icon)... another 3D rendering oddity with the engine, I suppose :-P

The glow effect being seen through walls happens when the walls have some transparency to them (even if it is unnoticeable)... I believe this is a limitation of the jMonkeyEngine glow effect I am using. I'm not entirely sure why the black squares show up on the map, but it is such a small oddity I haven't spent too much time on it (lots of bigger stuff to do!). The bounce-forward effect is from yourself rolling in the air after takeoff... if you jumped left, you'd probably bounce a bit left after landing.

I'll make a shorter contest when I return from my mini-vacation... the "raceone" is a bit long :P

Gentrieve 2 is a fascinating experiment in procedural generation. Gameplay is 3D Metroid-style -- a room-based FPS platformer -- but genre is less important here than the ideas the game presents and the mood it effectively sets. In the style of roguelikes and dungeon crawlers, each play-through provides a unique experience through random generation, right down to the texture of the walls. The aesthetic is refined (dark, retro-futuristic) and I'm constantly propelled by my curiosity and eagerness…
