The basic premise is that of any RPG – you go out you kill things, complete quests, explore the world, etc… The big difference is that the game world is persistent (unless you choose to totally destroy it and start over) so if you start a new character then whatever you first character did in the world is still around and has an effect on the second characters game. Further more you can create multiple characters, and inactive characters continues to exists in the world; only now the computer controls his or actions (based on how you played with the character) – so you could theoretically meet and kill one of your other characters if you chose to. That brings us to the second part and why we call the game Generations — you would usually never kill your other characters because they are all part of you family unit.
