The game begins 32 years after the Great War. You are a pilot in the Galactic Terran-Vasudan Alliance (GTVA), a single entity formed to cement the alliance between the Terran and Vasudan races after loss of communication with Earth. However, opposition still exists to this union, and a faction of Terrans led by Admiral Bosch formed the Neo-Terran Front (NTF) and has rebelled, taking over several star systems. The player's early missions are to quell these rebellions and bring in Admiral Bosch. Eventually the another alien species is encountered.

Youtube vid of current gameplay

Thoughts, comments, and whatever else are welcome. Just to be obvious about this, I am not 100% following canon. There are "shields" (which are just surface shields not an actual shield mesh) for gameplay purposes, as well as missiles for strike craft and short burst afterburners for quick acceleration or evasion.

Though I suppose I am going canon at least for capital ships as they will be pretty identical to how they are in Homeworld

Only an 8.2? This is the best space shooter I've ever played.

Will it run under Ubuntu 12.04 64 bit or 12.10 beta 64 bit?

I can confirm that it runs on Ubuntu 12.04 if you have the i386 libraries installed. I don't know about the beta.

One of the great classics of an era gone by. Missions remiscient of the glory days of space-shooters (X-Wing, TIE Fighter) with graphics that look as crisp today as they did ten years ago. This game certainly had that oooomph! that most games failed (and still fail) to reproduce. The first combat deployment of the GTVA Colossus still sends shivers along my spine.

Probably the best space sim I've ever played. Despite its age, it holds up to the test of time in terms of gameplay.
