Hi everyone,

We have decided to close the Kickstarter and stop the development of Freebooter for the foreseeable future. At the time of writing, we are still at 8% of the Kickstarter goal amount, and we do not see a way to turn things around before the end of the Kickstarter.

We have loved the idea of Freebooter ever since we first discussed it and we have enjoyed working on the game for the past year. We knew it was a very ambitious project from the start and that it would be a long shot to get it made, but we are happy that we have made an attempt.

We would like to thank everyone who have backed the Kickstarter and everyone who has followed Freebooter over the past year. We have been overwhelmed by the attention Freebooter has gotten and we are sorry we could not give you a chance to play it. In the end Freebooter proved too ambitious, but we will keep making games. Once again, thank you all for your support.

Johannes, Jakob and Nissanthen, Tribunal Games.

Do you plan to have fore-and-aft rigged sails in addition to the square sails we've seen so far?

Also, I just read your interview with PC Gamer, and I have a suggestion: if you're going to make a game where you play as a sailing vessel, you should really learn a bit more about sailing and the physics of sailing. For starters, you don't need to turn the entire ship to change the angle of your sails to the wind, and the best angle is not usually with the wind directly at your back. See this page for basics:

Thanks for the link - I will take a look when I have some time on my hands.

Just to clarify, a more realistic model of sailing would probably be a lot harder to get working and harder to inform the player about which also factors into the decision to go with the system we have now. That said we are willing to rework or change large parts of the game if they are not working out in the long run, so it could change before launch.

True, ease of use may be more important in a game like this than making a realistic sailing facsimile. I'll play it either way. :)

Is there any kind of ETA on when we might get an Alpha or demo?

We do not have beta testing or a demo planned right now but we are looking at a playable alpha for press, so you may be able to see others play it relatively soon.

Omg, pirates, and ships! AND FORTRESS!
I love this kind of games, specially the ones that leaves the player choose his own path.
Looking foward for it.
