It's been a long time since our last update! Since moving to the Unreal Engine 4, Faceless has gained a much clearer vision. As an inexperienced project lead at the time, I was overly-ambitious for what I wanted Faceless to be. I wanted to have four gamemodes, two single-player campaigns and a book. Those four gamemodes and two single-player campaigns would have amounted to a massive 28-30 maps, which is excessive for an independent team. Perhaps we should've started with a smaller game! However, since the move to Unreal Engine 4, we've redefined our goals, and our vision for what we want for the project has been clarified. This mini-update will cover works-in-progress, all of which may be subject to change.


Faceless will have eight multiplayer maps, four large and four small. The large maps will correlate with the story of the upcoming book; Faceless: Deliverance. In particular, they will focus around a pivotal event known as 'The Bear Valley Tragedy' - an event which resulted in the deaths of many, whose souls are now trapped in the Dolls scattered around Wakeland City. The small maps will be for those who wish to experience a quicker multiplayer game with fewer dolls and a smaller locale. One of these small maps is the Wakeland Town Police Department. North Rising is the single-player mini-campaign in which players will take on the role of Elijah Grey (Sam A. Mowry) as he embarks on his own search for Daniel North. This journey includes making his way through the edges of Wakeland City to the hidden Fallen Grace Church. A place of faith that buries the darkest secrets beneath it in the form of an Asylum, a hellhole that the Soulrender calls its home. This has been one of the more ambitious levels to create, inspired by games such as The Vanishing of Ethan Carter and Outlast, two very different games with two very different playing styles. Here are a couple of WIP screenshots. (Click on the images to see them in 4k!)

You can also check out this short teaser (From 13:34) on Daz Black's channel, which shows a short flyby of this scene, as well as his character's voice. (Due to a strange error, the video appears darker than the version provided.)

For those who also work with the Unreal Engine 4, you may recognise that we are indeed using Marketplace Content. Without this, I can safely say that the game wouldn't be as far along as it is now, and it's likely that the game wouldn't be possible without the Marketplace, so we are extremely grateful that something like the Marketplace is available to us. However, despite using Marketplace Content, we'll still have a great deal of our own content, and we'll modify the Marketplace content to fit the game and make it our own.


You may have also noticed our new header, finally revealing one of the dolls in the game. It is without a doubt that these dolls are the forefront of everything that takes place in this game. It is Daniel North's 'Plan B' to set these souls free and cast the Soulrender away from Wakeland City. Since Daniel's whereabouts are currently unknown, this task falls on his brother and three friends who venture into Wakeland City to search for Daniel and attempt to finish what he started. Along with this video is a short new teaser, which shows that these souls are perhaps aware of what happened to them.


Since the game is predominantly multiplayer, some of you may be asking how we're going to provide the story outside of the single-player mini-campaign. There will be collectibles throughout all multiplayer maps that give hints and story-elements for the player to learn. These collectibles will include digital recordings from Daniel North and Elijah Grey, body bags that you can touch and hear the last thoughts of the deceased, and VHS tapes which can be watched through an option in the Main Menu after collecting them. These will all tie into, and reference to the upcoming novel; Faceless: Deliverance.

Again, thank you all for your patience, it's not always easy hearing that a lot of people are impatient for our game, remember, we're just as impatient as you are! But a game rushed is a game doomed to fail, and we're definitely not going to rush our first project. Indie development is not as easy as it may look for those who haven't dipped their feet into the waters of the game development world. We've all learnt a lot since Faceless ever started, and we're still going to continue to learn throughout how to bring you the game we want to release to the world. One last thing, the Soulrender is going to be redesigned, so all current images of it are outdated. It will still retain a humanoid form.

I hope slenderman actually has animations and does creepy **** like leaning around corners like in marble hornets, the game "slender" really wasn't very scary, and that was due to how he just teleported after you, causing annoyance, not fear. This mod looks to have real potential, I just hope you don't **** up slenderman, so yeah, have him actually move more.

I did actually remember that minutes after posting, and tried to edit it, but moddb apparently won't let me edit posts after five minutes, forgive me. Will he have animations though or does he ONLY teleport?

Long time no see, guys. I still pop in here every now and then and check stuff out, and this is still looking absolutely promising. Looking much better than the very early development that I had been a part of.

Quick question though - you guys aren't making this free anymore? If I recall correctly, this game was supposed to be 100% free. Just curious as to why that is. Not that it's a big deal - you guys deserve the money for your obvious efforts, i'd say.

At the 2014 New Year's update, we announced it wouldn't be free.
It won't be free because, at the start it was just a mod for Half-Life 2, but then it grew into something greater than that; it grew into a full fledged game with top quality and an entire backstory and lore all its own. Everybody on the Faceless team are the best at what they do, we have a fantastic compilation of developers who are offering the best of the best and that's exactly what we want to give.

At first it wasn't an easy decision for us to make, but we decided it was for the best in the long run. Even, at first, our liaison at Valve suggested we go paid right after we got Greenlit, but we wanted it to stay free; that was until it became more than just a simple mod. But so everyone can afford it, we made the price $9.99 (convert that to what you will) and we didn't raise it at the Unreal 4 switch.

But don't worry, there will be a free version, but it wont have absolutely everything the full version has; the free version will only have two multiplayer maps for the Dolls gamemode and a demo of the prologue.

I want to cry.

I'm going to play the ever living **** out of this on my youtube channel whenever it comes out, and hopefully I can get my friends to join me on it. Seeing how absolutely amazing it looks already, I guarantee you I'm gonna make sure I get as many people as I can to learn about your company, and this game.

Look me up some time, I'm Shy the Why Guy on youtube, and I aim to be a horror game let's player. (I don't have many subs but I try my best)

Whoa there buddy, I appreciate the excitement, but let's get one thing straight, this is not a Slenderman/"Slender" game. The Being is not Slenderman, nor is It connected to the same universe as Slenderman.

Honestly I see 0 differences between the two other than this one having a blue suit. They both teleport, have the exact same look, can create proxies/dolls, etc. You don't have to be ashamed of it being a slender clone, look at gaze of horror and those other ones, they all have different mechanics, different rules and stories, different names, hell in one of them you can shoot him dead. I'm never gonna be able to call him anything but Slenderman lol.

Also when I choose to play a game, that doesn't change, don't worry :P I love games like these.

You've only seen the surface (and current version) of the Being.

Here's the thing:
1. They don't look the same.
Slenderman is more human in appearance.
The Being is taller, thinner and more alienic in appearance. The "suit" is actually part of the Being, Its skin.
2. Dolls created by the Being are not Proxies.
In Slenderman's universe, Proxies are apostates of Slenderman, who do his bidding and are under his control.
The dolls contain souls that have been trapped by the Being and It feeds on the souls for power. The likeness of the dolls represent the person's likeness (and time/era they were from)

That's only the tip of the iceberg...

We "don't have to be ashamed of it being a slender clone" because we're NOT a Slender clone, not even close.
It's also apparent you don't know what happened last year...

Reading this will tell you more about the differences between the Being and Slenderman, and also why we try to tell those who don't "see" that we're not a Slender clone.

Gaze of Horror and the other ones are different, they HAVE Slenderman, we DO NOT. But they all have the same mechanic, collect X amount of pages while trying to survive, I've yet to see unofficial Slenderman based games with an actual backstory and universe (and mechanics) all its own.

Faceless if VASTLY different.

We've always asked that you don't call the Being "Slenderman" "Slender" or "Slendy" because It is NOT Slenderman.

I recommend researching a game before talking blindly about it.

Unlike others I actually do research games man, you don't have to freak out about it :/ I wasn't talking blindly about it, I was just stating my opinion and the facts that I was able to see. You should just be proud of your game and happy that people (like me) like it, rather than argue. Calm down.

When you've put your heart and soul into something only to have it come this close [pinches fingers] to being forcibly taken from you by Slenderman's Option Holders themselves because they THOUGHT the Being was Slenderman, (from the link above) you have the right to be protective and try to get the point across.

Sure, they put out the C&D, mainly to strong arm/bully us out of production, in false terms without even properly researching the game, they didn't know the name of the game was Faceless, and even after clarifying, they thought the Being's name was "Faceless" and they felt the need to attack us instead of the tons of others deliberately, blatantly using Slenderman.

We try to avoid the confusion between the Being and Slenderman whenever possible because...yeah, they're not the same. But I think after you see the footage and It in-game, the confusion will be rid of once and for all for everyone.

Also I have a suggestion for further distinguishing him from Slenderman, perhaps a mouth? I'm not saying like a normal one, I had a very terrifying image in my head recently while thinking about the being. If I have the time I'll try to draw it and show you. Just a suggestion, not required, he looks awesome already as well :3
