Happy New Year!

This is a follow-up to our Christmas Day 2014 Update. If you haven't read that, please check it out!

2015 is upon us, and this will probably be our biggest year yet. As you've probably noticed above, our logo has had a slight redesign. This is our final design for the Faceless logo. The previous one was edited by John Costello, a past developer from our team. Today really is a day to look at the past, the road so far. We've seen Faceless go through many changes, including the names and logos as shown below.

Some of these you may not recognise, that's because they were never released publicly, a couple of others were lost in archived builds. The publicly released ones include 1, 3, 5, 6, 8, 9, and now 10. For those who are interested, the fonts are Whisperings, Steelfish and October Crow. The differences between 8 and 9 are subtle, the duplicate characters were made to look slightly different from the other. This is ultimately why our final design was made, to allow for a unique appearance that fits the game.

Prior to Faceless, we were remaking Parsec's 'The Eight Pages' in the Source Engine, but our ideas started to grow much bigger than that, and those ideas ultimately replaced that initial idea. Shortly after changing our name to 'Faceless' - We began to leave the 'Slender Man' mythos and begin crafting our own, which led to everything you know today. Daniel North, The Being, the Sorrowvirus and so on. This is the main reason why The Being looks similar to the 'Slender Man', because of trace remains and lore necessity.

It's impossible to say that time hasn't affected the story for the game, things are extremely different. If Faceless was still following its original idea, it would be a single player campaign following an ex-soldier as he works his way to a sanctuary whilst trying to evade The Being. Now it's changed into a group of four friends trying to work out where Daniel North has disappeared to after trying to kill The Being. The expansive story and lore would eventually become Faceless: Deliverance, a novel expected to be released sometime this year.

Today, the 1st of January 2015, truly marks the first proper day where Faceless as a whole has its characters, story, lore, ideas and settings well and truly set in stone.

Something we can't deny is that Faceless has had a few rocky moments. Without these moments though, Faceless couldn't be what it is today. It would have been nice to get here without having had those moments, of course! We're just happy to have finally cleaned the slate and begun a fresh start with a fresh year. We're glad to have told everybody that this project isn't just a 'Slender Man' project with a different name, it's something different entirely. Of course, somebody could argue that with the 'Dolls' gamemode being a collection mechanic, but it has the support of a reason, a backstory, and of course, the lore. For those who know, Faceless will be releasing with two single player short-campaigns, the Prologue (North Rising) and the Epilogue (Purgatory), which will follow Elijah Grey (Sam A. Mowry) and Daniel North through a small extract of their story from Faceless: Deliverance.

We hope to one day create a full single player campaign, but should that happen, it will be after the base game is complete. We always appreciate the support of those following us, and we also appreciate the support of those who are aware that Faceless is no longer a 'Slender Man' project. It is extremely important that when people see Faceless, that they see Faceless. It is understandable for those who see it for the first time that they may think "Oh, Slender Man!" - but look for the two key differences. A blue suit, and an alien-like appearance. For those who will come to eventually read the novel, or for those who go in-depth into the Wikia, We hope that the difference will become as naturally obvious for you as it is for us. On the outside, there may be similarities, under the surface, it's a totally different monster with a totally different agenda.

The Voices of Faceless Multiplayer.

Now, onto the next part of this mini-update, a word from each of our multiplayer voice-actors for Faceless, including Daniel Reinert, Danielle McRae, Daz Black and Adam Sklar.

"Daniel, where are you?"

Hyde Street Station in Garry's Mod.

Sandbox. Trouble in Terrorist Town.

Since we moved to the Unreal Engine 4, maps made on the Source engine are being used as a reference for their new and improved versions for Faceless. We didn't want any of the Source maps to go to waste, so our signature map; Hyde Street Station, is now available on the Garry's Mod workshop for both the Sandbox and Trouble in Terrorist Town gamemodes. We look forward to also bringing you an altered version of Hyde Street Station for Counter Strike: Source and eventually Wakeland Forest to Garry's Mod.

Thanks for reading our mini-update, we're really looking forward to seeing what 2015 brings us. All of our News Updates on this page prior to the Partial Reboot have now been marked as OUTDATED and are no longer official updates. They have been kept for reflective/archival purposes. The same will be said for certain elements seen in trailers prior to the Partial Reboot. The 'Abandoned By God' trailer and those made earlier than that use elements that are no longer canonical to the Faceless storyline, the majority of these elements are of course 'Slender Man' elements such as the usage of Hank Bennett in our 'Abandoned By God' teaser and other direct 'Slender Man' mentions. Everything else, including the story of Daniel North, Wendy Mason, Elijah Grey, the Sorrowvirus and Wakeland City still remain canonical.

As for the job applications we posted on the last update, we've already had quite a few good applicants, but just in case, here are the job listings again!

FacelessChristmasDay2014Update wrote:
Since Faceless will be sold on Steam, all developers on the project will be granted post-launch compensation based on sales. More information can be requested for those who choose to apply.

Level Designers/Mappers.

To apply for this role, you must have a good understanding of level design and to have had prior experience in the UDK or UE4 engine(s) - Past work will be required to show your skill, if you are under an NDA for your current projects, you will be allowed to create a test map as an alternative if you would like to apply for the position.

3D Organic/Inorganic Modellers.

To apply for this role, you must have a good understanding of 3D modelling and have past work to show on hand, the majority of models that will be required will be inorganic, but there will be some organic models such as foliage. Again, if you are under an NDA for any recent and unreleased work, we are more than happy for you to create a test piece as part of your application, should you choose to apply.

To apply, please email us at: sklarlight[at]gmail[dot]com

Once again, thank you all for your patience. It is much appreciated, we know you want the game now, but rest assured that this project will be more active and we hope to bring you more behind-the-scenes information and videos like the Voice Actor one in order to keep everybody in the loop.

Happy New Year, and have a great day!

Oh my god...
Sam A. Mowry, voice of Alexander of Brennenburg from Amnesia, my all time favorite villain voice actor, in a Slender game? All made in UE4?
I want to cry.

I'm going to play the ever living **** out of this on my youtube channel whenever it comes out, and hopefully I can get my friends to join me on it. Seeing how absolutely amazing it looks already, I guarantee you I'm gonna make sure I get as many people as I can to learn about your company, and this game.

Look me up some time, I'm Shy the Why Guy on youtube, and I aim to be a horror game let's player. (I don't have many subs but I try my best)

EDIT: THERE'S A VERSUS!?!?!?

Whoa there buddy, I appreciate the excitement, but let's get one thing straight, this is not a Slenderman/"Slender" game. The Being is not Slenderman, nor is It connected to the same universe as Slenderman.

For more information, check out this post.
Steamcommunity.com

Hopefully this wont deter you from playing it anyway.

Honestly I see 0 differences between the two other than this one having a blue suit. They both teleport, have the exact same look, can create proxies/dolls, etc. You don't have to be ashamed of it being a slender clone, look at gaze of horror and those other ones, they all have different mechanics, different rules and stories, different names, hell in one of them you can shoot him dead. I'm never gonna be able to call him anything but Slenderman lol.

Also when I choose to play a game, that doesn't change, don't worry :P I love games like these.

@ShyTheWhyGuy

You've only seen the surface (and current version) of the Being.

Here's the thing:
1. They don't look the same.
Slenderman is more human in appearance.
The Being is taller, thinner and more alienic in appearance. The "suit" is actually part of the Being, Its skin.
2. Dolls created by the Being are not Proxies.
In Slenderman's universe, Proxies are apostates of Slenderman, who do his bidding and are under his control.
The dolls contain souls that have been trapped by the Being and It feeds on the souls for power. The likeness of the dolls represent the person's likeness (and time/era they were from)

That's only the tip of the iceberg...

We "don't have to be ashamed of it being a slender clone" because we're NOT a Slender clone, not even close.
It's also apparent you don't know what happened last year...

Moddb.com

Reading this will tell you more about the differences between the Being and Slenderman, and also why we try to tell those who don't "see" that we're not a Slender clone.

Gaze of Horror and the other ones are different, they HAVE Slenderman, we DO NOT. But they all have the same mechanic, collect X amount of pages while trying to survive, I've yet to see unofficial Slenderman based games with an actual backstory and universe (and mechanics) all its own.

Faceless if VASTLY different.

We've always asked that you don't call the Being "Slenderman" "Slender" or "Slendy" because It is NOT Slenderman.

I recommend researching a game before talking blindly about it.

Unlike others I actually do research games man, you don't have to freak out about it :/ I wasn't talking blindly about it, I was just stating my opinion and the facts that I was able to see. You should just be proud of your game and happy that people (like me) like it, rather than argue. Calm down.

When you've put your heart and soul into something only to have it come this close [pinches fingers] to being forcibly taken from you by Slenderman's Option Holders themselves because they THOUGHT the Being was Slenderman, (from the link above) you have the right to be protective and try to get the point across.

Sure, they put out the C&D, mainly to strong arm/bully us out of production, in false terms without even properly researching the game, they didn't know the name of the game was Faceless, and even after clarifying, they thought the Being's name was "Faceless" and they felt the need to attack us instead of the tons of others deliberately, blatantly using Slenderman.

We try to avoid the confusion between the Being and Slenderman whenever possible because...yeah, they're not the same. But I think after you see the footage and It in-game, the confusion will be rid of once and for all for everyone.
Stay tuned...

Well good luck with the game! Can't wait for it to be released.

Also I have a suggestion for further distinguishing him from Slenderman, perhaps a mouth? I'm not saying like a normal one, I had a very terrifying image in my head recently while thinking about the being. If I have the time I'll try to draw it and show you. Just a suggestion, not required, he looks awesome already as well :3

Will a demo be available? I've only gotten the chance to test one game using UE4 on my PC, and it wouldn't even start, so I'm hoping I'll be able to verify that I can run it prior to a purchase.

@Paynamia

There wont be a "demo" but there will be a free version, but it wont have everything the full version has. It will have a short demo of the prologue and two multiplayer maps for the Dolls gamemode.
I guess you could give that one a try first when it's released.

But I think you'll probably have no problem running Faceless. Don't forget we'll have tons of graphics settings to modify to get the best performance while retaining playability and graphics. At some point later on we'll have the recommended system specs posted.

@Rascal07reardon

Now why is that? lol

If you're worried about it being a performance problem, don't worry, we're making it so that Faceless has tons of options to modify to get the best performance possible while still retaining playability and quality. It'll be even more in depth than most games nowadays, too.

U4 isn't like the CryEngine where you have to sign up on an external site just to play the game, no, all you have to do is get it on Steam and install, that's it; no other sign ups, no external site red tape, nothing. Just you, Steam, and the game.

We're making it so everyone can play Faceless, hence the tons of graphics options, the low price (not going up because of engine switch), and many other things. Like you, we're gamers, we know the struggle of such things. Faceless is a game by gamers, for gamers, and we're looking to bring the best experience you can have.

If these things aren't the problem, what is? For all we know, it could be a misunderstanding you may have.

@WyldStyle

Well, look at it this way...
On Source, there was a chance the game wouldn't come out at all if we stayed. The engine is 10 years old, buggy, and it's rare to find decent, experienced people who work on it. coughaiprogrammerscough
On Unreal 4, we're creating content much faster than before, and we can do things we couldn't do on Source. The engine is brand new, gets updated frequently, better tools, and more people are experienced with it.
It was either, stay with Source and get nothing done and risk the game never coming out, or switch to a better engine...

Still glad to know you're still anxiously waiting for the game.
