Faceless is a Greenlit Multiplayer Horror on the Unreal Engine 4 which sees players attempting to survive alone, or with up to three other players in Wakeland City to try and find Daniel North. Having followed his documents, the players must find Dolls in each location and deliver them to the Ritual Zones in each location to set the trapped souls within free, thus completing Daniel's quest, and bringing the survivors one step closer to learning of his whereabouts. Upon burning all the Dolls, The Being will be forced to depart from the immediate area... But not until it has tried to exact revenge upon you first.

We regret to inform you that Faceless is currently postponed until further notice.

It's been a very long time that we've been in development for now, much longer than our initial expectations, and sadly we have decided that it is for the best that we undergo an indefinite period of development suspension. This is due to various matters including personal ones due to College/University/Work taking up more time than expected, as well as difficult matters in development where we had hit a brick wall in development and couldn't proceed any further. This has been the case for the last few months now. Faceless has been a fantastic experience for us on the team, and as we explore new ventures we only hope it teaches us to return to this mod and give you the most amazing thing you've been waiting for.

Halloween Teaser Still.

- Without a doubt, I intend to return, whether or not the other developers intend to return is a question that is yet to be answered, but I will do my utmost best to make sure all the original lead developers return! No matter what happens, once this mod returns, it will return stronger than ever.

First Jumpscare Concept.

- Our goals were to make a terrifying co-op experience using the most terrifying creature to date, The Slenderman, whilst his hype has decreased relatively, that has never stopped us from trying to make the best possible Slenderman game out there.

Original Titles.

- We all remember the terrible and ever-so rapid name changes that we went through, from Slender: Source, our original name, to The Operator, Der Ritter, Der Grobmann and finally to Faceless, the name we have kept ever since.

The Being.

- Despite this indefinite postponement, we would like to say that there is a chance we may return to development, however that comes with its own weight of risks, we may not come back to develop Faceless. But I sincerely hope we do. We, as much as the fans, want this to be done to its best possible form, and because that can't be done at this current stage, we've decided to wait until if and when we can.

Shader Concept Comparison.

- We'd like to share with you something we haven't revealed to the audience properly before, the gamemodes that were intended for the final build of Faceless.

Faceless wrote:..-

Dolls: The base-game mode in which an amount of dolls depending on how many players start the game will need to be collected and dropped off in a specified area in order to set the dolls alight and "free" the entity from within the dolls. Once all dolls have been collected and burnt, the players will be able to successfully "escape". There will be 4-5 maps for this gamemode.

Versus: By popular demand, a versus game-mode where up to four players can play, and one is randomly allocated to play as the Slenderman. (Can be overridden to allow somebody in particular to be the Slenderman) A button will be tied to teleporting to a node behind the nearest player, whilst you can move after they have collected 75% of the dolls. Using the base-gamemode maps (Dolls.)

Run: A gamemode that spans over 3 maps where you have no objective except to run and survive, at the end of each map is a safe-house to which it transitions over to the next map (Think Left4Dead), the final map will be met with an escape option.

Sickness: This game-mode has been inspired by the Trouble in Terrorist Town game-mode in Garry's Mod, everybody will look like people, and more than 4 people can play, one will be assigned as the Slenderman and will appear to be a normal person. They have to kill as many people as they can without being caught, upon being caught everybody will have to remember who to run from and try to survive the remaining time limit. There will be about 3 maps for this gamemode.

Daniel North Falling to Purgatory.

Also, we had a new trailer that was due to be released, and since we decided it shouldn't go to waste, we decided to show you guys what may be the final Teaser/Trailer for Faceless.

But we hope that one day, like a Phoenix, we'll rise from our ashes.

Until we return,

The only person who was talking about developing another game after this one was Justin Ross, the person who began this mod and who has done nothing for it and is partly responsible for the downfall of this mod. So I'd make sure my facts are clear beforehand. Besides, Justin wants to resurrect this mod himself because it's "his". So, good luck, in all honesty.

ZombieSwarm Apr 8 2013, 6:26am replied:

I can vouch that Justin Ross had virtually nothing to do with the development of the game. The man would be out of his depth in a puddle, and yet would try to do everything in his power to convince anyone who would listen that he was actually a big player in the development of the game.

He publically made grandeous claims that were totally at odds with the direction of the project, but since he hadn't attended any of the staff meetings, and hadn't actually kept an eye on the team's skype feed, it was hardly surprising that he hadn't a clue about what was going on during development.

He would wait like a vulture over Adam's Youtube channel to steal the content for his own channel at a moment's notice, determined to give the illusion that he was still in the loop when in fact he couldn't be further from it.

And then there was the whole indiegogo debacle... The mess that he made of that was legendary, and none of the team were consulted before he went off running crazy **** like that.

ZombieSwarm Apr 8 2013, 6:27am replied:

He was also the one who thought that a project as ambitious as this could be completed within a month, in spite of what the rest of the team was telling him...

He hid from us, too, blocking us from getting in touch with him on Steam, Skype, and other means. He would conveniently "not see" forum threads where we tried to catch his attention, and would basically hide under a rock when anything important needed to be done, such as the refunds that we tried to organise for those who had invested in the indiegogo campaign. We couldn't contact him at all. It was like trying to get a horse to drink.

All of the drama and unprofessionalism that we are credited with having can be traced directly back to him. I could literally go on for days about the drama that he caused. However, in the spirit of not looking like a bunch of childish: "He did it!" types, we decided to keep our internal disputes as quiet as possible, but given the fact that Justin was still running around spouting his mouth off, it wasn't exactly easy to hold our tongues.

The unfinished version, although fun to **** around with for ten to fifteen minutes, wasn't really much of a game at all. Imagine being unarmed, in a room, with a HL2 zombie. That was basically the gameplay at it's current stage of development.

All of the "interesting" parts of the game could only be activated through console commands, and that's hardly what you'd call fun gaming. XD

sadly we see it much to often, that a group of people takes up a mod that is incredible and fantastic, but, ...just to ambitious. Please tell me when i am wrong, i just have this feeling with this message of this mod. most mods that do get put on hold are never heart of again. Its a real shame because this one had real potential. All in all we all have enjoyed the time you gave us with your news updates and we, or at least i and many with me thank you for that. As someone who has released many sp-mods i always advice to really see what actually can be made without help, or at least to much help from the outside. Making, and, specially making a mod releasable takes a awful lot of time, work and effort. Its is a shame that many people don't understand how much it actually takes, although, on the other hand, it is also of no concern for them. They just want to play a great project and right so there are.

Sorry for you guys, hope it was a great learning experience that made you hungry for a new project, one that can be made.

Many of us on the team are determined to come back some day, when our heads have had a chance to cool and we've gained a little more experience in the field.

Personally, it was through this project that I cut my teeth making my first content for the source engine. I learned a lot from the people who are on the team, and it has been a tremendous learning experience that I have greatly enjoyed. The other core developers were exceptionally patient and encouraging with me, and I feel that my confidence as a 3D artist has come on in leaps and bounds since the day that I signed on with this team.

We have since gone in our own directions to work on our own projects, but I am optimistic that at some point in the future, we return to this project to finish it off as we have put so much work, blood, sweat, and tears into it already to just abandon it.

Any chance of you guys releasing what you have done rather then let it go to waste? I understand you don't exactly have the code working but you could release the art assets.

ZombieSwarm Apr 8 2013, 6:32am replied:

If at some point in the future, the rest of the team decides never to return to Faceless, I will happily release the SVN version that I have to individuals like yourself, but it's hardly a playable game at this stage... It's mostly disjointed fragments of gameplay mechanics that can only be activated through console commands. The individual art assets might be fun to play around with in the likes of Gmod, but that would be about the total extent of their usefulness.

Going to say I am rather upset about this, especially considering people donated to the cause only to have development stop. I mean obviously it's a donation, and comes with no real responsibility from the recipient but they could still at least make an attempt to honour all those who participated rather than just running away on us.

That said, I have no idea exactly what's going on to cause postponing, but I certainly hope you guys are able to get it together in the near future and continue.

+6 votes     reply to comment
ZombieSwarm Apr 8 2013, 6:37am replied:

The donations were handled entirely by Justin Ross without any consultation to the team.

As for the reasons for our postponing, it mostly boiled down to a massive, gaping hole in our skillset. We had plenty of dedicated artists willing to work on the project to completion, but without a sufficient programming staff, there was only so much we could ever do.

Eliot was our only programmer, and the man worked like a trojan to make as much content as he possibly could, but the workload was too much for us to expect any one man to bear. As time went on, the enthusiasm of the team began to wane in light of the fact that we didn't really have much of a playable game, and it was looking less and less likely that we would be able to recruit anyone to fill the gaping hole in our team.

As a result, we have postponed the project. I fully intend to return to the project someday to finish what we started, but unless we get someone capable of filling the void that caused things to fall apart this time around, I wouldn't be optimistic about the second run meeting with much more success.

Honestly felt like crying after seeing this. Followed it since its first announcement and watched it like a hawk every day waiting for an update. Sad to see this coming to a indefinite postponement. Hate to say it, but Justin kinda seems like a real D-bag and caused the downfall, which most head creators of mods do. (Sonic 2 HD remix) Would love to see this come back sometime. I'll still be checking the page every so often, and if it comes back, you have my support, and donation if another indiegogo campaign comes up. Much potential in this mod, and would be a shame if this idea went to waste.

Thank you very much for your honesty ZombieSwarms, and that you take the time to clear it all up and answer all questions.
Never knew people had donated to this mod, in all honesty, donations for a mod? Why? There are no costs, and the time and effort put in to it by the makers should be seen as a hobby. But, gladly you cleared that up to;
" The donations were handled entirely by Justin Ross without any consultation to the team. "
Very strange that he did that, how can a team member do this?
I really would trow him off my team when one of my teammembers did that, (in all honesty, the last 3 years i work with only my friend Baltic and we know each other for 12 years, it would be unthinkable that he would do such a think, as it would for me to do it to him).
But that is something else.

A real shame all in all as i said before, but, like you said yourself. Even when a mod is not released, it IS a very well spent time to learn things, to have fun with team members, and to have the feeling of belonging to a group, knowing you are doing something great. And it is even more fun to have contact with trackers and followers, makes you feel a bit like a star, right?

Thanks again for all the explanations, we all thank you for that!

They'd had to put some form of DRM on everything to make sure it isnt stolen, which would take forever...and/or they'd have to make it controlled or closed..like have people that request it to be approved, so the game wouldnt later be all over the internet already de-compiled. That is a pretty nice slendy model they have there, even I would want to get my hands on it.
