A new war is brewing. A violent conflict, between the Six Colonies, each one convinced that it was in the right, each one sure of its own ability to defeat its enemies. But they need Generals. They need soldiers. They need you.

Why is it not available for Linux on Desura?

Because packaging for linux is extremely difficult. Linux' allergy to "Dependency Hell" makes packaging the engine + lobby + settings program very difficult. Moreover there is the fact Debian has somewhere around 50 different distributions doesn't help.

It is available for linux, but via different means. If you look in the Ubuntu Software Center you will find it.

what about the nice new service desura offers for installing dependencies via the desura client?

Even so it's still a bit of a nightmare due to the way the engine is set up. I have tried in vain to use cde and koshi tried using erlang to get a dep free build of the engine (and by dep free, I mean packing it all in the executable).

Here is my beef. All I care about is supporting ubuntu and ubuntu derivatives. Unfortunately, the engine devs do not see it that way and basically want to support everything debian (and other distros as well).

For example if the following distros were supported I'd be happy:
Linux Mint (my favorite)

The problem is, it isn't that easy, and tbh I'm kinda burnt out on it.

If you just want to support Ubuntu, than why can't you just use binaries from this ppa:
+ add your mod and maps?

Supporting only Ubuntu is not the right way to do it on GNU/Linux. You should at least support Debian, SUSE and Fedora.

But yes - setting up the Spring Engine and any game on GNU/Linux is PITA. That's why I only played Kernel Panic of all the spring games so far, cause it's in many distributions repositories.

I was hoping that Evolution RTS on Desura would help to change this and let me play one of the most promising Spring games, but... :-(

Yeah, the game is fun... except the maps are all screwy on mine. All of the images for them won't
appear or only show half and I get an error message saying that the maps png image wasn't found.
Can someone help me? Is this a problem with the game or do I need to reinstall for some reason?

That is very strange. What I need to diagnose is a screenshot (press f12 in game) and infolog.txt

It's possible that the install is bugged, but I'm gonna hazard a guess that your video card is an ATI, and ATI openGL drivers are lolterribad.

Anyway, you can find the screenshot in <whereveryouinstalleddesuraprobablyprogramfiles> \ commom \ evolution-rts \ screenshots
and infolog.txt will be in <whereveryouinstalleddesuraprobablyprogramfiles> \ commom \ evolution-rts \

I need to figure out some way to automate the process of infolog gathering. Use Pastebin.com to copy pasta the infolog. You should make this post in the help and bugs forum. This comments section is the wrong place for this.

I watched the video and thought this game looked most similar to Supreme Commander, at least on first sight.
What RTS, or group of RTSs, would you say Evolution RTS is most closely like, related to, or inspired from?
I want to DL this and try it out, by my Dfesura account won't connect for some reason....

ps: how did you make those tutorials? I really need to make some for my game.....

Bad for you, you just hit a pet peeve.

Evolution RTS has nothing to do with Supcom. The gameplay is entirely different, the engine is entirely different, in fact, the only commonality that the 2 games share is the fact that they are both RTS games. Evolution RTS is very "Twitch". In a typical multiplayer game, players are throwing armies of units at one another within 2 minutes.

Inspirations for Evolution RTS are mainly Expand & Exterminate, Total Annihilation, and a Sprinkling of StarCrap 2, but it is entirely different from all 3 of them.

What tutorials? You mean the flash ones? I used Wink: Debugmode.com

Downloaded and got it running. However, when starting a game, the textures for the ground do not appear to load. Instead, the ground is black, and you can see the white mesh outline of the polygons of the ground. There are trees, and the unit you start the game with, but nothing else.
I tried messing with the graphic settings, turning everything off that was extra, but that didn't help.
I am running Windows 7, on a brand new Toshiba Portege laptop computer, and am capable of playing other games.
Any help?

You have intel graphics (which I don't actually support, because they are awful video cards (and integrated video cards barely deserve the title...)

Anyway, try, once you get in game, press enter, and type:
/advmapshading 0
and press enter again. That will make things look awful, but it may work for you. I'm sorry, but intel graphics cards are quite horrible and lack decent OpenGL support.

TripleA_Developers Dec 22 2011 replied:

I'll give that a shot, and let you know how it goes.
As a coder I understand fully if you don't want to support certain configurations (though you should mention somewhere that you only support computers with actual graphics cards newer than xx date, and a short list of supported cards). Perhaps there is some check that desura can do to prevent people with integrated graphics from downloading/installing.
I'm running a 2011 Intel i5-2435M, which supports Intel HD graphics 3000, including Shader model 4.1, DirectX 10.1, and OpenGL 3.1. I would have thought that would be advanced enough for your needs, since it is technically better than the current crop of game consols.

Directx != OpenGL

Drivers mus have proper OpenGL support, and intel drivers do not. ATI drives also have awful OpenGL support. Clean commands are sent to the drivers, it is the driver manufacturer's responsibility to utilize those commands correctly.

Your built in card may have all the power in the world, but without proper drivers, that power is useless.

I never said integrated graphics wouldn't work. I just said that I'm not going to spend hours troubleshooting them, because it is always an issue with the drivers not having proper OpenGL support.

Buy Nvidia, and you won't ever have this problem with any game because Nvidia writes amazing and PROPER drivers. If your drivers are crapping out on you, you shouldn't be blaming the game devs that are using them correctly, you should be yelling at whoever is writing the drivers to stop being so lazy.

Highest Rated (6 agree) 9/10

Some people might find the complexity of play in the multiplayer to be intimidating, but once you really understand it you will be able to appreciate the gameplay that rivals top commercial RTS's.

Not to mention, being completely free, the price is right. All that currently lacks is an active player community.
