What can i say? I've spent many a good hour on this game and not regretted any of it. Although i have to admit i've probably spent longer reading about other people's exploits. In terms of raw entertainment i can't think of any other game that's satisfied my love of stories better than dwarf fortress, whether it's the Female Wardog that's given birth to pups mid battle only to have them viciously attack the enemy straight out of the uterus or the wonderfully innovative contraptions that the community has contrived to rid their utopian society of pesky nobles. Every game is different, of course, most of them end in a bloodbath, but that's part of the game too. Losing is FUN!

I can say nothing but good about this game. Some may complain about the ASCII graphics or its graphics in general, but the truth is this was a safety precaution. If Dwarf Fortresss was in 3D HD graphics it would melt your computer with its awsomeness.
But seriously though this is the most complex rewarding game I've ever played and I would recommend this to anyone willing to play it. But it is not for the faint of heart. This will help anyone who wants to play this game Afteractionreporter.com . Happy digging and Strike the Earth!

This game is one of the most satisfiying and refreshingly complex games I have ever played. The adenture mode also introduced me to the roguelike genre, of which I am eternally grateful.

Easily one of the deepest (pun intended) games I have ever played. The difficulty is absurd, it has the learning curve of a wall, but damn does it feel good when your dwarves strike valuable resources, or your lava trap works and wipes out invading goblins.
It definitely isn't a casual game, though, nor one for those who are all about graphics. It is to modern popular games as vim is to Word -- harder, more confusing, nearly arcane in comparison; but with a thousand times more potential, and if you put the time into learning it, you will be rewarded greatly.

This is the ultimate game. It has basically everything you could ever imagine (or mod into it).

Athough it's incredibly hard to learn and you need DwarfTherapist in order to effectively manage your fortress, it's satisfying as hell if you actually manage to get things going.

This is not simply a game, it is an experience. It is a dynamically created story of woe, triumph, struggle, love and, above all, digging too deep.

This is what the Ur game should be like. This is what games should hope to come close to achieving.

This is Dwarf Fortress.

Losing is Fun.

Dwarf fortress is special. Most people will hate this game when they will start playing. The interface is not user friendly, the graphics are in ASCII and it is basically impossible to survive one year in your first fort. After the beginning, some people will hate this game because it's hard, it's impossible to win, it's unfair.

For these reasons, I rated this game 9/10.
But this game, this game is one of the most complete ever released. You start your game with seven dwarfs. You decide what they bring and what are the skills of each one. The first season will mainly consist in starting digging, creating a farm (because you need to feed these dwarfs!) and starting to design what will be in the future a great fortress. The dangers are many : the fauna will sometimes be extremely dangerous, your dwarfs could run out of food, or they could become crazy if you let them unhappy.

Jump in the time. You dwarfs survived the first season, migrants have arrived, just like a caravan with needed goods. There are now other challenges for you fortress. You don't want to run out of booze, because a sober dwarf is a slow and unhappy dwarf; metal is starting to be needed and construction of basic goods will need more wood. Your dwarfs need a dining room, beds, and you may have to start thinking about dangers from the outside with your growing population.

New jump in the time. You now have a population of nearly a hundred dwarfs, but even now, even now that you have a true city working in front of you, you must keep working hard to maintain the order. Your nobles are making demands, they want a better life than the others and you will learn to hate them. Goblins are lurking outside, ambushing your dwarfs, attacking your fortress in great numbers.

But your choices are endless. Whatever you want to do, you can do it. If you see a volcano at the beginning, you may use it to build a magma cannon at the end. Because this is dwarf fortress; if you want to have something, make it.
