Every game must be reviewed according to its own genre.

And all I can say is this game is so unique that it is now a widely used "Inspration source".

Dwarf fortress is an awesome game, and an inspiration for my own game. I've had lots of fun in it - Both the lower-case fun and the upper case "Fun".

Cheers,
-Dirk

I don't mind the ASCII graphics but I can't help longing for something more. Other than that this game is amazing. There's a complexity and depth here that's practically unrivaled by AAA titles (and most indie games as well).

Just... just an amazingly fun game. Once you get pas the learning curve
(or should i say cliff) it is by far the best indie game you will ever play, past Minecraft, Terraria, ect. (yes i have played all of them). Download this game (I would recommend getting off of the official site though), get the Lazy Newb Pack if you don't want the ASCII graphics, watch captnduck's youtube tutorials for a hour or two, then play and figure out the rest of the game as you go. Once you get into this extremely immersive game, every other game you play will seem 'just okay' compared to this masterpiece.

This game encompasses so many aspects, each of which could be talked about at lenght. The whole civilization/word simulator is simply astounding.

There is definitely a learning curve, but there are so many youtube videos out there, that it's very easy to get into it using them.

I'd say this game is a gleaming beacon of hope in the sea of incomware that the gaming industry has become. Tarn & Zach are doing a crazy job at creating an RPG platform that dwarfs everything that is out there.

As if that wasn't impressive enough, the modding community is just plain insane. Additional content, or complete reworks of DF are available. There is even a Fallout Mod...

In the end, Dwarf Fortress is a must for any fans of the old school rogue games, and those who like micromanagement type games.

Bay 12 Games know how to make FUN!(tm)
