Although Dwarf Fortress is still in a work in progress, many features have already been implemented.

  • The world is randomly generated with distinct civilizations spanning over 1000 years of detailed history, dozens of towns, hundreds of caves and regions with various wildlife.
  • The world persists as long as you like, over many games, recording historical events and tracking changes.
  • Command your dwarves as they search for wealth in the mountain.
    • Craft treasures and furniture from many materials and improve these objects with precious metals, jewels and more.
    • Defend yourself against attacks from hostile civilizations, the wilderness and the depths.
    • Support the nobility as they make demands of your populace.
    • Keep your dwarves happy and read their thoughts as they work and relax.
    • Z coordinate allows you to dig out fortresses with multiple levels. Build towers or conquer the underworld.
    • Build floodgates to divert water for farming or to drown your adversaries... and don't forget the magma!
    • Surgery, sutures, splints, crutches and more: care for your wounded dwarves instead of leaving them to fend for themselves.
    • Much much more...
  • Play an adventurer and explore, quest for glory or seek vengeance.
    • Meet adversaries from previous games.
    • Recruit people in towns to come with you on your journey.
    • Explore without cumbersome plot restrictions.
    • Seamlessly wander the world -- up to 197376 x 197376 squares total -- or travel more rapidly on the region map.
    • Travel by day and search for a place to shelter as night falls.
    • Accept quests from the town and civilization leaders.
    • Retire and meet your old characters. Bring them along on an adventure with a new character or reactivate them and play directly.
    • Z coordinate allows you to move between twisting underground caverns and scale structures, fighting adversaries above and below.
    • Earn a reputation as a hero with the various civilizations in the world.
  • The combat model uses skills, body parts, individual tissues, material properties, aimed attacks, wrestling, one-time opportunities, charging and dodging between squares, bleeding, pain, nausea, various poison effects and much more.
  • A dynamic weather model tracks wind, humidity and air masses to create fronts, clouds, rain storms and blizzards.
  • Over two hundred rock and mineral types are incorporated into the world, placed in their proper geological environments.

6 comments by Kamin on Sep 3rd, 2012

As the Desura version of Dwarf Fortress has finally been updated to the newest, 0.34.11 release (after being stuck with 0.34.02 for quite a few months), it is only prudent to include a list of the newest bug fixes and tweaks included with the update. Strike the Earth!
-----------------------------------------
Major bug fixes
(*) Stopped crash from forbidden or otherwise lost containers in haul jobs
(*) Stopped crash from naming routes when no routes are present
(*) Stopped crash from renaming non-squads in the military screen
(*) Stopped adventurer from turning into an underground creature when solid ground for placement couldn't be found
(*) Stopped children from having missing/damaged clothing thoughts

Other bug fixes/tweaks
(*) Stopped dwarves from walling/isolating themselves oftentimes
   (*)
Worker chooses the closest tile instead of preferring tile at the top
left of each designation job location (they don't use path distance, nor
does this impact global behavior like choosing which designation job is
picked overall)
(*) Removed ramps near natural waterfalls
(*) Added confirmation for burrow deletion
(*) Added generic armor options (like those in the default uniforms)
(*) Stopped haulers from wandering in loops in certain circumstances
(*) Stopped removed constructions from injuring dwarves
(*) Stopped dwarves from looping between civ/squad equipment if they can't follow their orders
(*) Allowed dwarves to ride/push minecarts even when they don't have walking access to destination
(*) Made dwarves equip items based on clothing layering order (there can still be conflicts if some items are already worn)
(*) Made dwarves eat from backpacks/drink from waterskins earlier
(*) Made armor objects count for missing clothing thoughts
(*) Made dwarves drop equipment extra equipment more promptly when they are hungry/thirsty
(*) Stopped empty bags from popping out of minecarts
(*) Cleared kill orders when completed (they can take a few extra clicks to clear up)
(*) Non-fire-immune creatures will dodge out of hot squares
(*) Fixed extra flashing _ problem when naming routes
(*) Random seeds can now be typed up to the proper number of characters
   (*) Auto-assign new baby animals to mother's pasture/pond
(*) Stopped certain game actions from advancing when designations are placed
(*) Added indication of items which are already assigned in specific item assignment on military screen
(*) Stopped objects from being forbidden on enemy deaths if they are associated to fort military equipment
(*) Made command line world gen exit without forcing a key press confirmation
   (*)
Made command line understand quotes so that parameters with spaces in
their names can be used (doesn't seem to work on linux/osx, not sure how
to fix)
-------------------------------

It's working after I installed 32bit libraries but the audio does not work. "Dynamically loading the sndfile library failed, disabling sound". this is the message i get at game startup.

Heh, I have the nose of a blood hound!

Certainly not the brain, though. :P

Oh, and just to clear it up, I may have a furry-ish icon, but I'm not really a furry - I just dig the picture I have, haha. Anyways, It's been a while since I played DF; I've been keeping busy with a huge project of mine, who I'm SLOWLY recruiting people, from my own school, no less. For now, anyways.

This game is a dream. A beautiful dream about opportunities and possibilities. But its beauty isn't defined by fancy visual effect nor endless spectrums of colors. Loving Dwarf Fortress reminds of ones purest love towards a human, aimed at whats inside rather than the outter visage. DF is saddly a love it or hate it kind of game. Its complicated and tricky, many times confronting the player with situations that require sacrifices, easilly slipping out of control into the famous "tantrum spirrals…
