Welcome to Dungeon Colony!

Vote on Steam Greenlight

This is my first public indie game. My goal is to create a game in which you make your own dungeon while defending it from Heroes.

Dungeon Colony is a game influenced by one of my favorite games - Dungeon Keeper - and it adds Tower Defense waves of enemies with resource collection and crafting.

The game is in alpha and many features are not complete yet. I am updating the game quite regularly, sometimes multiple times a week. Download the alpha release on the web-site at www.DungeonColony.com. The game requires Java and it auto-updates itself if a new version is available.

About the game:

Dungeon Colony is a 2D fantasy real-time strategy game in which you take control over a Dungeon Lord and his loyal Minions to explore and build a Dungeon and save your colony from the brink of extinction. Command your Minions to dig out tunnels and rooms, craft items from resources they collect, and set up traps to defend your new home against greedy heroes. The mountain harnesses powerful magic that has the potential to give you control over the lands around you. But it's up to you to uncover its secrets before you are overrun by your enemies.

Update: I've uploaded a fix to a bug that crashed the game for many players when you tried to use the new selection feature mentioned below. New Version: v0.2.3.35.

Today's release (v0.2.3.33) brings changes to the game engine and the website:

1. Better precision when selecting items on the map

One frequently mentioned issue had to do with the way you select items that are overlapping each other. The problem was that you wanted to select some loot from the ground, but there was also another object or creature in the way. Before, you wouldn't be able to just select that object. Instead would have to move the creature out of the way first. That would become a big issue, if there were more than 2 or 3 items or creatures over the same spot.

To solve this problem, you can now use the Control key with the Mouse in order to select and cycle through each item overlapping one another. (This works with both Left and Right Control +Left Mouse).

Once you press Control, you will see a little yellow indicator around the mouse, letting you know that you are in select mode. There is a priority built in which determines the type of item that is selected first:

  1. Your Units.
  2. Enemy Units.
  3. Neutral Units.
  4. Objects.

It wasn't so easy to demonstrate, but the following gif kind of shows how i'm cycling through 2 units and mushrooms that are on the ground, depending if the creature is in the collision rectangle determines if it is going to be selected and cycled. You can also see that I'm pressing Control because of the yellow circle that appears:

It is also worth mentioning that the selection cycle does remember the items it has selected previously. It does so by storing a reference to each item or creature. This is helpful when an item is at some point in the list but then at another point is not any longer. This can become apparent in the above example when you see a minion walk in and then out of the area where I am trying to select. So what that means is that the order in which the items are selected and cycled through is preserved, even if a minion walks in and out of that selection area.

2. Comment on suggestions
The built-in feedback system allows players to submit feedback, suggestions, bugs, and more. Today, I am adding the ability to write comments on each post that is submitted. This allows you to discuss with other players each post. Depending on how well this works, I will probably add more functionality in time. Here is a screenshot showing the comments section to the right:

3. New Help Window
There used to be a help window that explained how to play dungeon colony. This was very old and had outdated information in it. I have updated the help window to use some of the newer features of the engine and included new tips. To access the help window, click on the question mark button in the right menu:

4. Website Updates
The website has also some new updates. The contact page has more information about development and the shopping cart has 4 new ways to buy or support the game. You can now even Give What You Want to send us a contribution to help keep development going.

Here is a summary of all the changes in version 0.2.3.33:

  • Adds ability to comment on any feedback.
  • Comments include comment, date, user, and optional response by developer.
  • Improves precision of selecting objects and creatures on the map.
  • Adds Control +Mouse click to cycle through objects and creatures overlapping each other.
  • Improves Input Class.
  • Changes Font on most Text Areas to use Currier New.
  • Increases the quest description text area size to fit text with the new increased font.
  • Reworks the Help windows, showing new tips on how to Play Dungeon Colony.
  • Adds new Purchase options to the web-site.
  • Updates the Contact web-site.
  • Fixes bug when saving Levels without description.
  • Fixes issue with attacking when creatures are already facing each other.
  • Fixes issue with Enemies being stuck on map.

Hey there! I hadn't played this game in a while and now that I did I'd like to give some suggestions, if I may.
Can you have the heads of the minions appear in the gui so that I don't have to scroll the screen to find them?
I'm still having a hard time finding and killing boars. Isn't it possible to make them killable by right clicking them after left clicking them, as it currently is to fell trees?
The dungeon master walks too slow!
I understand that the mountain should be black in the map before you explore it, but I find it really annoying that the forest around it also is. Surely the minions surveyed the area before settling down in the cave?
Oh, one more thing. A hero destroyed my workbench and I got stuck, I think... If I understand it right, there's no way to make a new one?
Btw, I still love this game! Thanks for making it!

Hi... Thanks for the feedback and suggestions. Got some follow up questions/answers for you:

The heads of the minions in the gui: Do you mean like a short-cut ? so that you can click on it (the shortcut) and them have the map center around the unit you selected ? One of my tasks is actually to allow the player to store units in the numbers 0-9, like most RTS allow you to do.

Boars: Yes, I shall add a bit more at start up. FYI, over time, boars do reproduce.

Workbench: You can have a Minion build a workbench in his own inventory. Make the minion collect a few wood (best harvest a large tree). Then open the minion's inventory (select the minion and click on the bag button on the right hand side). From there, craft the workbench as usual.

As for the rest, I have noted your suggestions and weigh those along with other feedback. If enough testers suggest the same thing I will change it.

THANK YOU!

Yes, a shortcut to select the minion, but not center around it, just select it. Number shortcuts would be great too!!
I didn't know about the workbench building. Thank you.

I like what I've seen this far. But please, work on the controls. The whole left-click - right-click stuff is kinda confusing imho. Not in the general strategy control, but mainly when it comes to placing crafted objects (standard procedure in RTS games is left click to select building -> left click place / right click abort, what you're doing is left click abort/ right click place) and crafting stuff. The crafting menu in itself is something I find rather unusual and to some extent unneccesary in a RTS game.
Damn, this ended up sounding way more negative than I actually feel about it. Don't get it wrong, I like the game so far. It's really promising.

Thanks Kacktus & WolveNZ for the comments. Yes, the left/right click will be changed before beta, since I want to also make it work uniformly on tablets.

Yea, the crafting system took awhile to figure out, but I do like it as it makes sense with the work bench (ie, the avaliable workspace)

really needs more explaination, that im sure will come on later builds

With the Right Click/Left Click, Really does need re-doing, might be worth putting out builds with differnt forms of Clicking and having a poll to see whats best, I find right now its very easy to get a bit confused and move stuff around by mistake etc... and Selection Minion while moving is quite hard, maybe remoave the selectability of grounds?

Sounds like a plan. My idea of buildings structures would be more like a normal RTS game though: you issue the construction of a structure, and guys get to work carrying stuff to the site, and once all is there, boom.

My plan is to also allow players to configure the keys. But I also like the polling idea =).
