Duke Nukem will bring his signature brand of babe-lovin', cigar-smoking, beer-chugging and ass-kicking action as he once again saves the Earth and our babes from hordes of invading aliens...next year.

2K Games has made it official. Duke Nukem Forever is alive and, well, in the hands of developer Gearbox Software, confirming our earlier reports that the Borderlands studio was helping to complete the game’s absurdly long development cycle.

The publisher announced this morning in advance of PAX 2010 that Gearbox Software was on the job, picking up where developer 3D Realms left off. Gearbox plans to ship the game within the next year, accordingto a report from the Wall Street Journal—the WSJ says DNF is due “next year” and “currently expected to ship in 2010.”

Given Duke Nukem Forever’s epic development—it was first announced in 1997 as a sequel to Duke Nukem 3D—it might be wise to hedge on the later of those two release windows. Gearbox and 2K will be showcasing the game to press and the public at this weekend’s PAX convention. 2K Games is offering a publicly playable demo of Duke Nukem Forever at its booth. After more than a decade in development, Duke Nukem Forever all but ended its production after the collapse of studio 3D Realms. Gearbox Software president Randy Pitchford tells the WSJ that his studio picked up development in late 2009 and that the game is currently in the “polishing” stages.

The problem is now we will have nothing to compare to any mods/games that keep getting delayed. Awesome new though. I look forward to it.

the last 5 years i never......NEVER ( !!!! ) thought that DNF would actually would be finished and released. but, now it really does look like it still is going to happen. i have been reading loads and loads of articles the last few hours and it seems that we even can expect a demo at the end of 2010 !

i am 100% sure that the game will be released in 2011, simply because it would cause HUGE damage to 2K Games and developer Gearbox Software when they can't keep there promises. They know as no one else how much is at stake when they don't keep there promises. from then on they will be mentioned together with 3DRealms DK adventure, and that would be deadly for them.

about the engine, looking at the teasers and gameplay movies of the latest version of DNF i really think they use the IDTech 4 engine, and not the Unreal one. i for one really hope this will be the case because i think it's much better as the Unreal engine. i know Unreal is much better qua large outdoors, but other then that ID Tech 4 (and 5 of course)do look much much better, and as mapper i know my way around much better in the IDtech editor. but i know many of the Unreal engine fans will not agree with me at all on this point.

all in all is this great news, although i am really afraid for how the game will actually play and look. when it is released it is already old you could say, even when they polish it now.
it would be a real shame when the final DNF game turns out to be a huge disappointment, so lets hope for the best.

all in all, GREAT NEWS !!

a duke nukem, shadow warrior, napalm fan from the first hour!!!

So it's in the hands of a good studio now, but they're still having to work with the incompetent 3DRealms crew. I question the logic, but Gearbox should be able to overcome the handicap.

Call me a skeptic but I will wait till its actually out before I believe this.. now I admit.. if this is true then...

I loved DN3D, and I have been wanting to play DNF since they first announced it soo long ago.

Just hope it stays true to DN style all the way through.. and that it was worth the wait.. ( Man.. this game better give me my own personal harem when I get my hands on it.. :P IE I really hope it was worth the wait.. I mean come on.. 13 years for it.. its longer than the wait for SC2! )

Forgot to add.. now if we can only get the ones who currently own the Dungeon Keeper IP to make a 3rd one.. ( Or give it back to its original developers.. whom from what I understand have been attempting to get it back for a while now.. )
