Defence of the Ancients pits two teams of five players against each other in highly competitive, 40-minute or longer matches. Each player controls a single hero who levels up and stockpiles gold to purchase powerful equipment and consumables. As computer-controlled armies continually spawn and rush the enemy's base, players are responsible for using their powerful heroes to turn the tide of the battle in their favor.

DOTA Once a simple mod & now one of the worlds most popular moba titles has just let loose with a new set of modding tools.

Whilst no official tools were ever released for DOTA2, The community have been creating custom content for this title for quite some time, their efforts now rewarded with a polished new development toolset direct from depths of Valves HQ.

Dubbed by some as 'Source 2' due to the new asset rendering pipeline, those that currently map in hammer for Source, might want to check out this new toolset, it may be similar to what you will be using for Half Life 3 or Left for Dead 3 mods and maps.

Some of the features in this release include major changes to how content is created, delivered, and experienced for Dota 2:

  • Completely New Tools - The new suite of tools support creating and importing content for custom games. This set of tools requires a 64-bit version of Windows, Direct3D 11 compatible GPU, and opting into the Steam Client Beta.
  • Steam Workshop Submissions - This early version includes the ability to upload and distribute custom game modes through the Workshop. This new automated process allows players to subscribe to an author's custom game mode to automatically keep current as updates are released by the author.
  • Testing Custom Game Modes - This alpha release is focused on getting the tools to developers first. Currently playing custom games requires a 64-bit version of Windows and a Direct3D 11 compatible GPU. In upcoming future releases we will extend support to more systems (including 32-bit and Direct3D 9) and make it easier for players to download, find matches for, and play user created game modes.

These tools are for you and we're looking forward to seeing where the community takes us in developing content for the expanding Dota universe. Help us make Dota 2 even bigger and better. Leave us feedback with your experience and suggestions on the Workshop Discussions.

Documentation for the Dota 2 Workshop Tools can be found on the developer wiki.

As always you can add your own mods and addons to this profile as a place to promote and host your maps and mods, what will you create?

dota takes strategy, miner has never played anything close to dota it seems, and there's nothing wrong with Valve making a game that will be successful or help showcase a new style of game play. Whats wrong with improving a proven concept?

I think this is somewhat smart for Valve. This gamemode is familiar with a large amount of people and this shows that the Source engine is capable of other types of games than FPS

@_Wolf_ : i HAVE played DotA. i didn't say it's crap but it isn't strategy. strategy is company of heroes, age of empires series, total war series (not fully strategy, i know), C&C series, stronghold series, etc.

and what strategy involved when you're back from the dead all over again and doing the same damn stuff. (e.g: bashing pixels).

i think it's more like action. run and bash, slash and boom. maybe valve's going to change my opinion about it once it released.

and YES! i never said valve shouldn't improve the game. can YOU tell me the aspect of strategy involved in DotA?

The fact that there is nothing to improve :/ if you’re saying that they can improve on Dota then you’re saying Dota is crap which it is not WC3 dota was a awesome Custom made MAP!!

that’s all it is it’s a great map which people loved to play turning it into its own game is definitely a big risk but multiple smallish indie developer game designers have already done so, And it’s not really improving on anything its mainly just dota with copied of the old dota

For starters they named it dota 2 which really makes me believe this is some type of joke. I’m sure valve can pay someone to figure out a better name then dota 2, And the heroes :/ they are just the EXACT damn same war craft 3 map heroes no thought has gone into the game what so ever.

to even say this game will be successful is stupid in itself how can it possibly be successful when there is so many imitators which can think of a name other then Dota 2 and their own Hero's :/

And to decide to make this crap instead of half life 3 is extremely beyond me Half life 3 would be a instantly sold out game in shops.

Your logic is hilarious. I'm not disagreeing with the fact that its interesting (stupid?) for valve to remake a game that is already a very succesful map. But to say that dota can't be improved on is a bit strange. everything can always be improved, and that doesn't make everything crap. I hope Valve make something brilliant out of this, even if it is similar to the original DOTA. They will hopefully be able to broaden the game play, and bring it to a wider audience.

i assume u have been under a rock your whole life name 1 good remake everyone knows the first and original is always the best then the second is a plea for money your logic is extremely focused on 1 side no matter the outcome

i assume you must love dragon ball evolution and all the dbz franchise yes that stuff is gold every second week they release game or a movie same is happening with the original dota, Remakes will never be as memorable as the original for 1 reason it was the original you makebabies cry at night jordan_maxwell

I expect you to give a good remake better than the original you should find allot since your logical is so smart :/ loser..

i assume u are so deep within your sloth rock that u havent heard of League of legends or Heros of newearth

You can't call DotA strategy. it's more like mashing pixels for some times until it ran out of hit points, spawn, and do the same **** all over again. FOR 40 MINUTES

Slevo Oct 20 2010 says:

Valve is not making this : /

Are they high they are going to make another strategy type dota remake to try get in on some of the Indies remaking dota?

Dota is not that good it’s only good because it was the only thing u can do which was fun on war craft 3

We don’t need more dota remakes -_- what’s next footmen wars the game.

I seriously wouldn’t be surprised...

Why not make island troll tribes better then another crappy dota remake laughable that someone as big as valve is behind it I’m sure you have enough money to create your own idea and not leach of a war craft 3 maps
