A massive demonic invasion has overwhelmed the Union Aerospace Corporation's Mars Research Facility, leaving only chaos and horror in its wake. As one of only a few survivors, you must fight your way to hell and back against a horde of evil monsters.
A gorgeous yet soul-less experience that begs for attention, not a big breasted blonde only interested in your wallet, but Doom 3.

[page=Doom 3 review]
Not quite soul-less on a whole but very repetitive. Before I start I would like to assure you that I did not dislike Doom 3, however it is not a clear, perfect game and neither is it close. Other views have caused major uproar due to there slightly negative nature and by god they are essentially right.
First off let’s confirm the basics; everyone knows Doom 3 is the best looking game out
: on the shelves and pretty much every game coming out in the next few months. It features a lot of fancy gorgeous effects that will amaze you first time round, as well as some spectacular level design which really allows for the effects to be thrown around perfectly. It is also worth mentioning how well the engine scales to accommodate your system specs, any computer that meets the minimum requirements will have no problem running the game on low settings at a low resolution, whereas high end computers can really enjoy the ultra mode (although you shouldn’t!) with a high resolution at a fairly impressive framerate.
The character models and gun models are equally as impressive, the guns look polished and realistic in design, while the enemies look evil and dangerously real. The flashlight, which also doubles as a weapon, shows how great the engine’s lighting system is by letting you light up every nook and cranny while dust specks in the air waver backwards and forwards. It is also worth nothing that each enemy uses ragdoll physics which looks impressive; however they burn away too quickly to truly let you enjoy the moment.
While we’re speaking of lights I had best mention how integral real time lighting seems, most of the time anyway. The big draw-in point of Doom 3 when it was shown time after time was its high-poly characters and its real-time lighting. However, only occasionally could I effect the lighting, which was a major disapointment.
The guns, particularly the shotgun, feel heavenly. I know many have said the sounds are too weak but personally I think all of them sound fine and tweaked to perfection. There is some fine (not needed) tweaking to be done admittedly, but I’m sure some user modifications will soon fix this.
ID couldn’t have got the length correct to suit everyone’s needs. If the game had been short then there would have been uproar by the loyal community, but if it was to long it would seem repetitive. Well it pretty much lies dead in the middle. The game feels like a long struggle to hell and then a really long way to finish the game entirely. The plot is rather rounded (not detailed, flawed yet fitting) and allows for the space setting to be used well.
The journey to hell is a long twisted road that feels like a huge chunk of the game; however after hell there is another long twisted journey that I felt could have been easily cut. As soon as caverns started I wanted it to end, I was all doomed out. In conclusion the plot and length of the game vary together but ultimately the game is too drawn out.
The cut scenes are sparse and used wisely to introduce new enemies. Each enemy gets its own initiation with some sort of sick room entrance, interestingly all plot twists are performed through computers, scripted sequences or your PDA.
The scripted sequences are very much the bog standard set of unchangeable, un-interactive stage sets where you might as well let go of the mouse and keyboard. To me it felt like this was all a bit hollow, using the basic speechless cut scenes for such a modern game seems a little weird - there were moments where I was begging the main character to speak or just generally react instead of the basic camera swoop to let me clean up the mess.
One well-implemented feature in the game is the interactive GUIs on most computer screens or doorway pads. Almost immediately you are given a PDA (Personal Data Assistant) to manage your tasks, monitor emails and view video clips. Throughout the game you pick up other peoples’ PDA's and nose on there emails and audio clips, and most give you access codes to doors or cabinets which contain vital ammo and health. The PDA and interactive computers fit well into the game’s futuristic atmosphere and I expect a lot of future games will also use this feature.
The boss fights and general enemies seem averagely smart and well placed. The general enemies such as imps, zombies and spiders put up fight but generally follow generic attack patterns which are easily learned. The general enemy placement and the placement of their spawning from hell allows for a lot of sneaky attacks which can easily raise the heartbeat quite a bit.
The game’s atmosphere is very dark and eerie, you genuinely feel that each room contains a new danger that needs a lot of care, attention and planning to ready yourself for. As the game progresses more shock tactics are used alongside bloodier, darker and gorier levels. The enemies tend to dictate the type of level design, for example the level where the trite (a spider with a large head) is introduced the dark corners contain spider webs and there are many vents that they can crawl out of.
Multiplayer, I would go in depth here but it feels like I’d be smacking a defenceless baby. I hope ID find it in there heart to release some more maps, add some player models (4 colours doesn’t cut it) and really rethink the multiplayer formula to be more Doom-like. The multiplayer for many was the decider point but after playing it I felt like I’d been slapped by ID, even though they did say it wasn’t a main focus. Mod makers have already upped the player limit but let’s hope they hurry out with some speed modifications and better maps.
To sum Doom 3 up is very hard. On one hand it had me playing it non-stop because the basic gameplay had me hooked, but on the other hand it was a very linear experience, which really any Doom fan should expect. To be fair the game does try to innovate with its interactive GUI and amazing graphics, however a lot of the game is based on an old shoot and run formula. Regardless of all that I would advise anyone with a computer that meets them minimum specs to pick it up ASAP and enjoy it for what its worth; a straight forward blast to hell.

might have to buy it, i can only hope some of the modders goto doom3 instead of the 500 odd going for half life 2.
That was a really cool review, man. It gave me plenty of info about Doom 3, while hardly giving out any spoilers. I will definitely be at least renting this game when it comes out an Xbox. Real nice work ;)
I say like one of my buddies, "i played doom 3 with a buddy of mine for 12 hours straight cause we thought doom 3 is looking so cool and must have an amazing gaming experience, after these 12 hours we were tired of seeing the same stuff over and over again so we exited doom 3, then it turns out that the next time i start it i only had one hour left to complete it! The game is nice looking but its too repititive"
1.) door locked
2.) update PDA
3.) OH CRAP NEW MONSTER or SWEET NEW GUN
4.) creepy lights
5.) exit
well the problem with multiplayer - is that with more than 4 people it is utterly draining on your system
or at least thats their reason, im still waiting for a demo to see if i can run it
Where did I say multiplayer is draining my system? It runs at 60fps with 16 people playing, as I said its just terrible, its way to fast - has no atmoshpere and the maps are cack.
yeah and laggy as shit if you get too many, its quite pathetic...

I had a lan party of Doom 3 with 32 people, with the 32 player addon. Each computer had either a Radeon x800 or a Geforce 6800 ultra. It was one of the most amazing multiplayer experiences they had. Its all about the hardware man. :D Anyways, the people on the Geforce 6800 ultra got better framerate and had no lag, as to the Radeon x800, they got some lag when either some was shooting which cause by Sound conflicting with the graphical hardware. Thankfully I use the Geforce 6800 on Ultra Settings and I had a blast. I would rate it 9/10
With the reviews D3 is getting it doesn't look like a supermoddable platform which most people will enjoy using.
Hehehe...
Quake1 whas dark, but looks like Doom3 beat then at this :D
Will Doom3 have is own "QuakeWorld", a internet oriented flavour netcode for Doom3?
Will TeamFortress for Doom3 sux or will be cool?

Oi... good review, mostly agreeable, but you missed an entire half of the stinking game! What about its awesome moddability? ;) Once you pull down the console it seems like this isn't Doom 3 but a bloody awesome platform to make a game!
good fuckin game, nuff said
Scripting is a needed feature, live with it. If we had them "acted on their own" the game would get boring alot more.
Nice review azz0r, I'll still wait for the demo to decide though :)

(y)? No more MSN for you! ;)
I dont mod - a modder cant write about its capabilities, this was just a review of the game - Im sure someone else with review its modability more indepth.
I'd hafta defend the multiplayer a tiny bit. Yes. The maps and models suck, I'll give you that... and it is very demanding, and all revolves around the hardware and compatability... BUT.. it's DOOM, man. Did you ever play doom 1 or doom 2 serial linked 10 years ago??? I did... for 100's and 100's of hours.. needless to say, once I lowered all my graphic settings, and did a few tweaks.. it runs fine multiplay.. and since there is auto run and no sniper rifle crap... I'd really like to give it some props, instead of saying bad things about something they admittingly didn't focus on that much. Thanks for the awesome review.
Doom III really beats the other 3 doom's that came out, which were good for their time, i played doom III on my computer with specs:
Intel P4 3.20ghz with HT, 1024 mb DDR ram, 256 mb geforce 6800 ultra
and it worked really well. The game really blows away the competiton but the game im waiting to be released is Half-Life 2, and if thats better (which it looks like it is) i would rather get that game and get doom III later on when the price has dropped.
I recommend a fast computer for max quality for playing doom III it really needs alot, but i also recommend that if you havent got it yet wait for half life 2 it would most probably be a better game, and if it isnt by that time doom III's price probably went down a notch.
I just played this today, and I must say I agree with most of what you reviewed, azz. The graphics are mind blowing, and the models are all very well made. However, the experience becomes extremely repetitive after only a couple of levels. There aren't a whole lot of differing areas, each enemy attacks you in the same manner, and it just becomes habitual after awhile. After three or four hours into the game, I started losing interest just because nothing changed. The level design is fantastic, really it is, but the variety it offers is severely lacking. Far too often I would find myself in a corridor that was identical to one only minutes before. The sound work is great and really adds to the ambience, and I love the flashlight.
The weapons are not balanced well. The pistol is absolutely worthless as a backup weapon. The shotgun is powerful, but can't hit anything past 10 feet (should have a bit more distance) and is very slow to pump or reload. The machine gun is also worthless, as it's just a wimpier version of the chaingun, is not powerful enough to use primarily, and could have easily been replaced by a more unique weapon. I used the chaingun and shotty throughout the game, switching briefly to the plasma rifle when I was low on ammo. The grenades aren't as powerful as I'd have liked, but they can come in handy for tossing down windy corridors. The BFG makes a triumphant return, and procedes to wreck shop as usual.
I loved the game, it really is a great shooter, but it's not the innovator and industry-shaker that everyone was expecting. Still worth a buy and definitely worth some replay. I haven't yet tried multiplayer, though.
wen is a big mod comeing?
Hi there,
Just wanted to say that your review is smack on.
To me this just feels like System Shock 2's prettier, dumber, cousin.
A shame really, such a great engine and a poorly executed opportunity. Run of the mill, and a dissapointment.
I know iD arent the greatest storytellers in the world, but you cant have this type of game (I would say it fits into the survival horror genre) without a believable main character. I mean, can you imagine playing Silent Hill without the main character? It just isn't as scary because you dont care about the characters in the game. If this were an old school style game ala the original dooms then this wouldn't have been a problem. It suits that pick up and play style.
I know i'm being harsh on this, bu in my veiw while Doom3 is fairly competent in most areas, it is lacking in the most essential areas.
I hope Half Life 2 dosent fall into the same trap.

To the reviewer -
Your multiplayer review was close to the point. It was quite awful. I wouldn't of said terrible, but i could care less about the more nit-picky details. What really got me upset was the lakc of Co-op. Nowadays, games are way too "Rush online and kill your freinds in intense blah, blah, and blah modes!". They're all teh same. I'd rather play against a common enemy with a friend then gib him.
I am slightly angry at your single player review though.
1: Too long - No game is too long. Ever. I didnt want the thrill sensation to end. It was heartstopping at some points, almost to the point where I thought it more healthy for my heart to eat nothing but McDonalds for a month (a la "Super Size Me") then continue playing. Some people may think it to long, some of us (those who liked it) will thin it short. More bang for the buck is a Good thing (read some PC gamer to understand the previous comment comment), since nowadays games are starting to get on the short side single player wise.
2: Camera-swoop comment (too long to post) - What's the fun of having your charactar play clean-up time for you? The point of the game is to be scared stiff, and if the AI controlled you does all the killing, its not quite as scary. It might have been cool to have seen him react just once or twice, but id probably would have done it too many times, making the cut-scenes long and unfun.
3: It doesnt bring anything new to the First Person Genre - It does. It Brings Fear. 90% of games nowadays are WW2 shooters, because its an easy thing to make a game out of - There are good guys and bad guys. It's not like cowboys and indians, where the enemy isn't really bad, its the world versus the nazis - who were Bad. And so, since its mainly "Go kill the krauts!", its not very scary, and its not supposed to be. The last time I played a scary game was.......I cant even think of one at the moment. It was cool watching the Imp that was stalking me crawl around the cieling, and when i went to shoot him he ran off, only to reeapear monets later - with friends.
I do agree with this statement, though - "Cheeky Enemy Placement." There was one point, where, after flipping a swtich, and imp popped out of a random wall slot. And then, after i killed the first, a second appeared, and then another. Upon entering the crevice they entered from, I realized it was just an alcove, where the 3 imps had been piled one atop the other. Cheeky indeed.
Pretty good review, but i think it should have been scored a little higher. Oh well.
Thanks for your feedback guys. I would just like to address a few points on the last guests post;
So you wouldnt mind playing through 100hours of long corridors with the cramped feeling and samey enemies? I bet you'd get very bored after the boss fight then being told you'd have to find your way right back to the very begining of the game would you? :)
Thats not what I was saying. Sure the camera swoops fine a few times, but the game was just begging for some kind of incidents to go on where you character progressed alittle, it felt like 20 or so missed opportunities where the char could have expressed some emotion or something abit more `hellish` couldve happened.
To a degree, Id say more cheap scare tactics is more accurate. Dont get me wrong, I certainly wouldnt play it with the lights off but thats because the games so dark that its so easy to dump something in a corner and make jump. Jumping != fearORScared. Again - its a huge missed opportunity. They had this huge story of Hell being opened, you could do so much with that, but instead alot of it was just corridor based shooting. To really add something to its genre it couldve enforced its fear factor by having bizare incidents happening more frequently.
I just made a LIghts OUT mod that extends the Lights out time to 10 MINS instead of 30 seconds..ALSO i added CHAINSAWS...LOL TEXAS CHAINSAw ALL OVER AGAIN.......... flyingscot15@AOL.COM
I could not handle it. IT was scary seeing the beast come out of mow where. :nervous:
;)
good review. i think doom once again revolutionized the gaming experience in our world and took it up to a whole new level. Just as doom1-2 did, only that time they were the ones creating the first. Hats off to Id. Doom3 engine will be used in countless future FPS games.
