User generated content is shaping up to be a real game changer this year with id / Bethesda showing off the new map maker coming to PC and surprisingly consoles when DOOM ships later next year, take a look at what you can create and get those creative juices flowing.

And if you havn't had chance to check out the gameplay footage here's a sneak peak, looks like they took a page out of Brutal Dooms book with an impressive goresystem this time round!

It's good to see that id Software is still supportive of custom content. :)

Look at steam workshop... clearly that's the worst idea known to man.

This level editor looks way too casual. It's like simplistic level-constructor made especially for consoles rather than advanced editor with full creativity freedom...

Yeah, looks like a ****** timesplitter level editor that they are trying to pass off as the next best thing since sliced bread. I have a hard time imagining how modders will be able to create total conversions with what has been shown of the tools.

It just looks like a block editor where you can only connect rooms together and maybe change one or two things in said rooms...

Even if it's like the TimeSplitters mapmapker, I don't ******* care because I LOVED the mapmaker in those games - really excited for this!!!

Only if they release a real sdk will the mapmaker be fine in my book. I mean Bethesda should at least give us the option of choosing which tools to use between an sdk and the striped down mapmaker. A mapmaker is always fun for throwing a quick map together to play with your friends, but it pales in comparison to a real sdk.

The thing that really bothers me with a mapmaker type tool is that it limits the growth of the modding community for the game. Once people have seen the extreme limitations of the tools (which is often the case with mapmakers) they will just go look elsewhere as was the case with timesplitters and halo. It’s just a small gimmick to attract more customers to the product, but in actuality doesn’t add much to the longevity of the game.

And not only that, but I don't see a lot of talk about bethesda.net on here. If mods are hosted on that site as seemed to be suggested during the conference then we, as a community, might have a problem (considering all that paid mods fiasco).

To me it's one of those things that differs from person to person. Some people won't like the simple mapmaker so much whereas someone like me who loves TimeSplitters' mapmakers (Still using Future Perfect's to this day, it's fun as all hell) will absolutely stick around and keep making maps just for the fun of it. Though I do understand the concern.

For console users (Especially with the severe lack of games) this will probably be the leading shooter for PS4 and Xbox One for a little while mostly because of that simple mapmaker and I think that's great but I can see that PC users who want to mod the **** out of the game want a full SDK. Knowing Id, I think they will have it both ways, the mapmaker for people who want to sit back and make maps the simple way and the hardcore, extreme modders who want to make full-fledged maps.

So I agree with the concern that you have for the PC version SDK which will most likely happen, but I completely disagree with the mapmaker being nothing more than a gimmick. To me mapmakers are far from gimmicks, being someone who played a ton of TimeSplitters 1, 2 and 3 I see them as the meat of the game (Which is why I'm still playing them to this very day) for shooters like Doom, TimeSplitters, etc because more community content is good for everybody. As long as Id makes a rating system in the Snapmap to promote the great levels and to weed out the crap stuff then I think that is where the majority of the community will go for their custom MP, SP and Coop content for the game.

It should be both ways, mapmakers for the casual editing and the full SDK for the hardcore modding - I think just about every game should have one for or another for map editing and if they can have both then it's good for everybody.

+1 for Future Perfect. But yeah, if they make it like Future Perfect I have absolutely nothing to complain about because it's pretty much of an in between that allows everything.

Carmack said via Twitter that he worked on SnapMap before leaving Id. This may be more than just a Timesplitters-ish editor, but i think a SDK would still be necessary.

Presumably there will be an sdk according to Carmack's tweets. Twitter.com

I wonder how much advanced stuff You can do with it? and hope they won't fail with time as they do with Rage tools and Doom3 documentation.

Perhaps they will introduce a ranking system so people can vote, or have developers top picks.
Either way, in an age of DLC is king I think this has potential to add substantial value to the game.
Adding mod/ editor is rare because its one of those "if we have time and money left we'll do it" things.

I'm not worried about "crap" maps being made. Most maps released in the first year or so are crap for any game. Few bothered making content for D3 tech games and Rage tech has almost no takers at all.

Me, personally, if I were a dev on Doom, wouldn't put any $ in to tool dev for modders for this game. The fans and modders mostly whined and crawled in a hole for the past 11 years with only a handful of dedicated ones who loved creating content doing anything.

The BEST thing id/Beth could do at this point is get a TON of kids to make simple but fun maps with this editor and want to do more with other games from their company. Get those kids in to modding and the next id game give them something to do. The current modding & game community is overly critical of anything that's not near-AAA studio content and that part of the fanbase needs to be squashed so new up-and-commers can get their work out there w/o the constant fear of wanna-be's.

BTW, can run this when I get it I'm making a D2DM7 remake. Every game needs one of those.

I hope they'll release some SERIOUS tools for the PC version... As they always did, since this isn't big enough for the community we are

Don't worry I reckon Id will be more than happy to do that - it seems like they want to strike a balance of both worlds. The simpler editor for people who want to do it TimeSplitters style and the full SDK for people who want to go balls deep in map and mod development.

The maps could also be curated by mods/developers in terms of "This weeks featured map!".

I am honestly a little sad to see a developer add an intuitive map editor and it's met with such negativity.

As some else has stated, John Carmack as said ( Twitter.com ) a full SDK is likely to be released but in his own words, it wont be as easy to use as UE4 or Unity so why bother?. Not every game needs a full blown SDK as some engines are built ground up for the specific needs of the game design. Doom 3 for instance looks like crap when its anything other than indoor/ dark environments which is why "The dark mod" looks so great and appropriate for that mod.
