The Old God has left the world and the pretenders are awakening and coming out from hiding. You start the game by designing one of the pretender gods that will compete for true ascension to godhood. The type of god can range from a magically powerful arch mage to an ancient kraken or a mystic monolith that people pray to. Your pretender controls one of over sixty different nations and with the help of that nation he will spread his word and battle the other pretenders. Dominions 3 is a turn based strategy game. You can play single- or multiplayer (1 - 23 players) with simultaneous turns. There are more than 1500 different units, 600 spells and 300 magic items in the game. The game also features a medieval musical score by Erik Ask Uppmark and Anna Rynefors, both awarded the title of Musicians of the Realm by the Swedish Zornmärkeskommiten. Dominions 3 is a highly detailed game and a 300 page pdf manual is included in the download.
All these "rabid", highly-praising reviews made me very skeptical at first, but this game really is that good. It probably has the highest variety of spells, units (regular and heroic), artifacts, and modifiers (afflictions & boons for units, etc) out of all the strategy games that I've played. That means it's highly replayable and you can always run into something new, or try new paths to victory. It seems to be really well balanced too, and so far I haven't run into any game-breaking elements - sure, you can develop some heroes into really powerful one-unit armies, but they'll never be invincible due to all the game mechanics.
The music is excellent too; wish it was available in a complete package somewhere.
The interface isn't very good, but at least it's straightforward, and easy to get used to.
Excellent and deep strategy game for players who love tinkering with tactics, units and spell setups. Hundreds of spells, items and units make this the best fantasy strategy game I've ever played.
It takes some time to learn but the community is really friendly and helpful so ask and ye shall recieve.
I suspect I'll be playing this game for years to come, unless Dominions 4 is released :)
I bought this game 2 years ago. Single player mode is alot of fun for a while until you learn how to comfortably beat the AI. But it is in multiplayer it truly shines. Thanks to the platform-oriented approach of the developers, the game has been modded and improved since its creation to an incredibly deep and hard-to-master strategy game.
