The Old God has left the world and the pretenders are awakening and coming out from hiding. You start the game by designing one of the pretender gods that will compete for true ascension to godhood. The type of god can range from a magically powerful arch mage to an ancient kraken or a mystic monolith that people pray to. Your pretender controls one of over sixty different nations and with the help of that nation he will spread his word and battle the other pretenders. Dominions 3 is a turn based strategy game. You can play single- or multiplayer (1 - 23 players) with simultaneous turns. There are more than 1500 different units, 600 spells and 300 magic items in the game. The game also features a medieval musical score by Erik Ask Uppmark and Anna Rynefors, both awarded the title of Musicians of the Realm by the Swedish Zornmärkeskommiten. Dominions 3 is a highly detailed game and a 300 page pdf manual is included in the download.

To be fair, Van's dwarves are more powerful.

It's the Marveni early game that's a bugger.

Wow. I almost completely forgot about Marveni. I suppose they get an honorable mention for me as I won my first big game with them.

Early game isn't that big of a problem, particularly with CBM recruit anywhere boar warriors. Earth Blessed boar warriors with a bit of nature - Protection 16 (20 with berserk), high damage, regenerating, crazy low cost, they're little buzz saws of death. Say goodbye to any early game problems. But even without them I never quite understand why everyone always says their early game is tough. They have plenty of tools to get the job done, just have to make sure they're used correctly.

And it's super easy to spam forts with marv without really sacrificing anything. Let your boar warriors carry you while you recruit Gutuater at first and spam the hell out of your cheap 800 gold forts and 200 gold temples. You don't have to worry about missing out on Druids because- amazingly enough - they're recruit anywhere too and can come flooding out of every castle. Marverni has some of the best communion potential in the game.

I agree that their national troops are decent enough (at least compared to other magical powerhouse nations) and you can do a lot with them. (Even before the latest CBM, which is when I played them.) I had even planned to reply along these lines myself.

The problem Marverni do have though is that their first really strong magic comes online a bit later than is the case for many competitors. (Blade wind is good, but doesn't work against everything, and really needs summon earthpower too. GoH comes along later. Compare that with for example skellyspam for C'tis or Thunderstrike for Caelum)

As such the period they need to rely on their decent-but-mediocre recruitables is longer than it is for many others. So, while as C'tis you can be pretty confident to have skellyspam online by the time most aggresive rushers plan to attack you, as Marverni you really do need to consider what to do when you're under attack before you can bring your magical power online.

Still love them best though.

But you should have 3 - 4 forts when others have maybe two. And there are low level spells like far strike, mind burn, curse, tangle wine, wine arrow, earth meld (plus the low level version), strength of giants, legion of steel, sleep, sleep cloud, to name a few. You have to be creative and know what you fight to chose the right tool. Early game think more about what your gutuators can cast, not the druids. But seriously, would you, as the aggressor, use srtong magic that early? We are talking turns 9 -15, or not? As defender it;s different. There you lose may 2-3 turns of research.

And they are my favourite as well.

I really enjoy EA Arco. Setup properly you can get some good early expansion and good gold to build. You've got great magic diversity (except for death and blood) so its easy to get a good early gem income going with some manual site searching. The oreiad is a great unit. Very flexible and sexy too. My favorite thing is you can be very flexible with them. You've got seduction, mind-hunters, big armies if you need them, communions, the magic diversity and gem income lets you recruit some big nasties...I really enjoyed Bogarus but I think EA Arco just has more diversity.
Oh...and I forgot the healing priestesses!
And those D2B2 indy vamps fall for the Oreiad everytime!

Both ages of Vanheim. They fucking rock, all game, every game. Best damage battlemagic (air), best support battlemagic (earth), both at levels that let you spam properly. Recruitable thugs. "Normal" troops that despite their cost can kick the crap out of a lot of things. Vanheres and Einheres are god damn blender specialists. Skinshifters not so shabby either. And one of the best blood path combos.

EA Arco is also nice but they have some frustrating bits, like the sheer quantity of mystics you need to get something out of it and the entire troop lineup in some situations.

Lanka, Hinnom :)

Some more votes! Since The_Demon mentioned two MA Van units and one EA Van unit I'll put his vote in for MA Van. And of course I agree with how awesome Van is. :) Tabarka mentioned Lanka first so with nothing else to go on I'll place his vote in for them.

Currently Marverni and MA Van are tied for most popular nations (with a grand total of two votes each so, again, not really a very scientific survey :P ).

i love MA Ulm. watching arrows bounce off tower shields, watching enemy troops flail inneffectively at armor, black knights sweeping in from the flanks with awesome killing power, twohundred indi archers sending clouds of arrows up...awesome, just awesome.

effective against even a middling player? well, no. not really. but hey, i keep trying it, because i like it. also, i love messing around with trinkets at 40% off. and i love earth evos. and iron angels(although i can't keep em alive)

of course, if anyone can spam thunder strike, it gets depressing fast

My vote goes to MA Ermor.

They combine the joy of having hordes of ravenous undead with the flexibility and power of communions.

First votes for both MA Ulm and Ermor!

Most fun to play,....

Probably LA Ulm to be honest.

Vanheim, any era. For much the same reasons as The Demon. Thunderstrike sabbaths, Vanjarl thugs, stealth in reasonably tough troops etc. And with CBM, good blood magic. Vote for EA Van as I like the possibility of all-glamour armies. LA Abysia. Great blood magic, all troops and mages FR100 which is fun times with fire storm, heat from hell etc. And now many of the non-cap mages have death magic which helps a little with the old age.

I'm playing MA Pan for the first time now and enjoying it a lot. But too early to qualify as a favorite nation.

A second vote for LA Ulm puts them in a tie with MA Van and EA Marverni for the lead. And EA Van gets on the board with their first vote (and I'm not surprised at wargr's pick since for some reason I tend to note fellow glamour nation fans).

The diverse picks are not surprising to me. I think one of the great things about IW's game is that the diverse lore, magic paths and style of play has something to appeal to most anyone (and if you then factor in mod nations I'd say everyone can find something they like). Though maybe I'm a little surprised we don't have more giant nations on the list.

If it didn't feel like Hubris I'd have said Skaven though. I genuinely do find them most fun to play, but voting for your own nation is just sad.

I don't think so. It's actually kind of neat that you were able to design the nation you find the most fun. And Skaven is probably the mod nation I'd most expect to see on this list since they seem to be frequently mentioned as being fun to play. I expect that's mostly due to the nation's style of play but I also think there are certain (animal?) themes that are particularly fun, such as the monkeys in the base game nations.

So that puts Skaven on the board and drops the vampire counts out of a share of the lead.

Is thread necro OK if done for a non-death nation?

Because there is a nation that can...
...employ philosophers to develop weapons of mass destruction.
...send flying ponies of doom into battle.
...flood the world with sceptics until everyone believes in the one true god.

And then there are Oreiads. Mighty Morphin' Power Oreiads.

For the full message, use head phones.
PLAY IT LOUD!

They've got a power and a force that you've never seen before
They've got the ability to morphe into a battlemage, an assassin, a thug, and even more
No one can ever take them down *
The magic lies on their siiiiiide!

Go go Power Oreiads
Go go Power Oreiads
Go go Power Oreiads
Mighty Morphin' Power Oreiads!

They know the fate of the one true god is lying in their hands
They know to only use their weapons if the analysis that the expected average utility exceeds the sum of opportunity costs plus valued risk of full or partial unit and gear loss stands
No one will ever take them down *
The magic lies on their siiiiiide!

Go go Power Oreiads
Go go Power Oreiads
Go go Power Oreiads
You Mighty Morphin' Power Oreiads!

* Except for Fomorian giants. Effing basterds!
