The Old God has left the world and the pretenders are awakening and coming out from hiding. You start the game by designing one of the pretender gods that will compete for true ascension to godhood. The type of god can range from a magically powerful arch mage to an ancient kraken or a mystic monolith that people pray to. Your pretender controls one of over sixty different nations and with the help of that nation he will spread his word and battle the other pretenders. Dominions 3 is a turn based strategy game. You can play single- or multiplayer (1 - 23 players) with simultaneous turns. There are more than 1500 different units, 600 spells and 300 magic items in the game. The game also features a medieval musical score by Erik Ask Uppmark and Anna Rynefors, both awarded the title of Musicians of the Realm by the Swedish Zornmärkeskommiten. Dominions 3 is a highly detailed game and a 300 page pdf manual is included in the download.

I've installed, un-installed then re-installed, run as administrator, and everything else, but I still have a strange bug that makes me unable to play past a turn or two (or five, in my current game). All I do is play, normally end the turn, then when it's loading the new turn, the same message pops up no matter what I do: "addcrc: can't open file". Clicking okay automatically boots me off the game.

Then, after it boots me off the game, when I try to run the save game again, there's a message that says "turn file corrupted". That also boots me off the game.

Does anyone know why this happens? I got Dominions 3 from GamersGate, and there doesn't seem to be anything wrong with the version I am using (my brother has the exact same version and has no problems). I have patched, re-patched, had several installations and uninstallations. I just don't know what's wrong.

Never seen that one before. And again, the basic questions: What operating system and version and is it fully patched? What graphics card and does it have the latest drivers? Those for starters.

One thing you may also want to look into is using Crystal Disk Info to check the condition of your hard drive. If the files have ended up on corrupted sectors of a faulty hard drive, behavior like this is not unusual (generally). Also, if on Windows, use Ccleaner to clean up all temp files and the registry entries. Then defrag the hard drive. Then see if the problem repeats.

First off. Check your install location. Dominions 3 does not handle the user control/administration settings of windows vista and 7 well. I strongly recommend installing dominions to c:\dominions3 and NOT to c:\programfiles\dominions3. Dominions needs to write to disk and Win 7 seems to be unable to figure that out.

Dominions adds no registry entries so you can simply cut and paste the directory in c:\programfiles to just c:\ and it will run fine. Make a new desktop shortcut and you should be golden. You can also run dominions from a thumb drive or any external drive. This is very handy for sneaking in a turn at work :) Not that I have that problem anymore.

Also it's not entirely impossible some completely idiotic antivirus program thinks Dominions 3 writing turn files is a bad thing.

I have Windows 7, a fully patched Dominions 3, and I have a graphics card that has been perfectly able to run Dominons 3 in the past; I actually just got Dominions off of GamersGate because I had lost the manual (and thus CD key) a short time before I had to reboot my computer a year ago. The problem doesn't seem to be graphics or anything. It's odd that it's having problems now though.

I have the Dominons 3 folder on the desktop, does that matter? I guess I should just re-install it direct to the C drive? Let's see if that works.

The desktop is not a recommended solution, because its actual location is c:\Users\[your user name]\Desktop and the [your user name] folder is a protected location which has certain access restrictions. So that's probably what causes your issues.

My Dominions and other Illwinter game installations are in c:\games\illwinter\[subdirectories] and there is never a problem with that location.

Installing to just the C drive seems to have worked, I have no more problems with turns. Thanks!

Excellent. That's the most common problem with Windows installations.
