The Old God has left the world and the pretenders are awakening and coming out from hiding. You start the game by designing one of the pretender gods that will compete for true ascension to godhood. The type of god can range from a magically powerful arch mage to an ancient kraken or a mystic monolith that people pray to. Your pretender controls one of over sixty different nations and with the help of that nation he will spread his word and battle the other pretenders. Dominions 3 is a turn based strategy game. You can play single- or multiplayer (1 - 23 players) with simultaneous turns. There are more than 1500 different units, 600 spells and 300 magic items in the game. The game also features a medieval musical score by Erik Ask Uppmark and Anna Rynefors, both awarded the title of Musicians of the Realm by the Swedish Zornmärkeskommiten. Dominions 3 is a highly detailed game and a 300 page pdf manual is included in the download.

Dominions 3 Plain Random Map

I really wanted to have a quick way to give a random map a graphic boost. Graphics are secondary when playing a strategy game (yadda yadda... the same diatribe which appears in every post about a TBS game), but a cool looking map is just more fun to play on. I used this one as a starting point.

After putting it through a fractal terrain generator and then layering it in Photoshop, I got:

Dominions 3 Fractal Map

That's more like it! I still have some messing around to do because I want to give the map some epic looking mountains, but it's a nice start. Total time needed for this conversion was about an hour.

I'll post more maps and files at: Atalentforraw.blogspot.com

Interesting results. :)

If you want maps without the premade borders, use the RanDom program to invoke the map generator with the option to set border width to zero. You can then process the image as you like, delete all the pixels you want, draw province borders to your own preference and make a map from there. It's more work, but the results speak for themselves.

Thats very cool. If it could be automated Id add it to the routines at Dom3Minions.
Id like to see more of these. Were you able to copy the white pixels to a layer so they dont affect the filters and can be put back on final save? Or they can just be added later manually. Also note that the game likes for borders to have a touch of red in them. Not mandatory but it helps keep things clean if someone later wants to edit features in the games map editor.

I was messing with the generators that are in GIMP for awhile

If you look at the maps on Dom3Minions you can see some of the variations available to us.
