Combining its own unique take on the real-time roguelike genre, with a nostalgic 16-bit look and feel; Diehard Dungeon is a game that feels both familiar and quite different at the same time, "occupying a curious middle ground between The Legend of Zelda and The Binding of Isaac". [Edge online 2012] Followed by a trusty, treasure collecting companion chest, the player must make their way through the dungeons many randomly-generated rooms and levels. Armed with a sword and a ‘hand cannon’, all manner of nasty dungeon dwellers, bosses and traps will need to be defeated or traversed in order to emerge from the dungeon victorious! To aid them in their quest, the player may be lucky enough to encounter one or more upgrades, or new abilities, scattered throughout the dungeon. A randomly generated dungeon is created every playthrough. Discover the dungeons many secrets and multiple outcomes. Do you have what it takes to survive the dungeon?

I hope you have been enjoying the latest update (1.4.2). Thanks to everyone that has supported Diehard Dungeon over the last year. The game has changed quiet considerably since it's initial release, thanks in part to the excellent feedback I've received.

Thank you for your support and happy dungeoneering! I look forward to sharing more news soon!

So how exactly does one get the game into windowed mode? I've tried numerous screen resolutions (all the way down to 1024x768--I won't go lower because then I'll have to put all of my desktop icons back into my preferred order) and only ever manage to get the program crashing on startup. The screen will go black when it goes to go full screen and then it's crashing. Dr. Mingw reports that the fault is in KERNELBASE.dll. Prior to the RaiseException in KERNELBASE.dll is GetCLRFunction from clr.dll. Any thoughts on how I might manage to get the game running?

Hi, I don't believe your issue is related to resolution. It's most likely to do with Windows Media Player failing to play the starting music, either because it's disabled or removed. Please look at the Troubleshooting thread in the forum by clicking the link above.

Curious and piteous at the same time. AI War, back when it used XNA and not Unity3D, didn't need Windows Media Player for its audio. Granted, it used OGG format, but I highly doubt that would make a difference. They likely used a 3rd party library or coded their own (and since I recall helping them with some music skipping issues, it was likely their own code). Oh, that's right. They used SlimDX to access DirectSound for audio.

At any rate, playing the game without sound doesn't appeal to me as a solution, nor does reinstalling WMP.

Alas, it looked like such a fun game.

Do others like me a favour and make system requirements visible with WMP included. It's not on everyone's computer. Those of us who favour other, far superior media players, will have long uninstalled it.

XNA using WMP behind the scenes for music playback was not something I was aware of until very recently.

I'm not happy about the situation at all, as the last thing I wanted to do was force end users to install a piece of software they had intentionally removed.

I will be looking into alternatives for music playback.

That's good to hear. I'll be happy to play the game once an alternative is in place. =)

That would be great, i have an azerty keyboard, and somehow, i am totally unable to switch to qwerty, so the game is pretty much unplayable for me for the moment :(

I'm currently working on a solution to detect the players keyboard layout and map the keys correctly. This should fix the issue for non-qwerty layouts. Full key remapping is something that will take longer, but It's something I would like to include in the near future.
