Ignorance is bliss. I look at these and think "Gah! With their mass and tensile strength these pieces should break apart and maybe after a few years drift back together in a semi-spherical shape. Heck, if the planetoid was blasted apart to this extent, the largest pieces should be one tenth the size and be more conservatively shaped."

This is 3 smaller pieces together. Also, keep in mind it's a game, there needs to be a level of abstraction :) I can hardly build this thing from 100s of pieces and real time fragmentation tech is still in its infancy. Also also, the main motivation was to create somethign that is noticably bigger than asteroids, which is what these fragments are.

You might remember the planetoid concept from last year: Indiedb.com

I'm working on refining that and bringing it into the game. The current idea is to have them mine-able after they have been cracked open. This could be done using a significant amount of fire power, or maybe using some tech, it's not clear yet. But essentially, there's a good amount of resources inside of these, that aren't available to the player right from the start. You have to work for them.
