This is a sci-fi, 2D, keyboard-controlled shooter in style of Robotron, but with modern features like voiceovers and scripted sequences. The gameplay is frantic and bloody, and each weapon is good for a specific situation. NOTE: the game is story-driven and DOES NOT FEATURE RANDOM LEVELS. You play as Dr. Green, expelled from medical practice after an unfortunate incident. Mysteriously freed from cryoprison on colony Sarang-2, he discovers that there are very few humans left in the world. Driven by the desire to find his estranged daughter and haunted by flashback to the incident that ruined his life, he has to make his way across the devastated surface of the planet, and overcome unspeakable challenges.

Now you can download the full version of Dead Colony for free. No gimmicks or limitations.

Dead Colony is a story-driven shooter in style of Robotron, but with modern features like voiceover and scripted sequences. There are frequent changes of scenery and surprises. There are several monster types with different strengths and weaknesses.

You can save/load your progress at any time (no stinkin' checkpoints), there's a minimap, and the 2.x version has a more suitable ending.

The game is 2D and uses cell-based movement, but it "feels" much like Doom.

Enjoying the demo. I'd like to request keybinds for next/previous weapon. choosing by number is kind of a pain for me.

This is likely to be in the next patch.

Correction: it didn't make it to this patch. Like Doom, the game relies on situation-appropriate hotkey weapon switching; if you take your time to cycle between weapons, you're screwed.

It woul be nice to have a lot of tiles styles to switch to. The ASCII is a good idea, but I'd like to have several realistic ones. Will it be modable?

All the graphics files are exposed and can be modified. Not sure about supporting an "official" mod structure, however.

I think an official mod structure certainly wouldn't hurt anything ;).

I imagine it would be pretty easy to convert if you're using SDL. You're probably not doing anything platform-dependent at all in fact. You could get a copy of ubuntu 12.04 up and running in virtualbox, download the gcc and sdl packages and build it in no time.

I know it's kind of a hassle and I'm certainly not trying to push you into doing it, and I'm happy with the game on windows-only personally. I just don't want you to miss out on having another platform available and maybe more sales as a result because you think that porting it would take a long time.

"Building executable" is only a subset of porting process. I might get back to this topic if I manage to get sufficient experience with Linux.

Currently looking into making highest difficulty harder, and possibly a random adventure mode.

Harder? Holy crap! I only finished the Seasoned difficulty and the end of the game was violating me like a new guy in prison. I can only imagine how hard Reckless will be. Looking forward to it though. :)

I am getting some conflicting feedback on difficulty, which makes things... difficult. Gonna pretend-meditate on this issue because I don't, uh, really meditate...

P.S. The boss exploit you mentioned, fixed it with today's 1.02 patch.
