Darkout has been in development since July 2011 by a small group of people from very different countries (UK, Southafrica, France, The Nederlands...) behind the game there is Adrian Banninga, an industry veteran who has been working in the CG field since 2000.

The main features of the game are:

  • Sci-fi theme with elaborated graphics. The game atmosphere is clearly inspired in movies like Aliens, I am Legend or Pitch Black. Also the game aims to capture the beautiful landscapes seen in recent films like Avatar.
  • Great survival component. Your character will be constantly harassed by enemies coming from the darkness and will have no other choice than fighting for his life with the weapons he will find, everything to gain access to precious resources he can craft/loot/harvest.
  • Light vs. Dark combat system. You are the only survivor in a world ruled by darkness where light will be your best ally to make your road through hordes of hostile creatures. At the same time, the light will be the biggest attractor for the enemies who want to destroy you and convert your soul todark matter by all means. Other nice point to mention is that the player will encounter some awesome and fierce bosses waiting for him at different points of the game.
  • Exploration and strategic component. The game design is shaped in a way that the player will have to think twice about where to set his base, how to manage resources he find and and research the materials from his environment in order to upgrade his equipment. In this way you will evolve your character along the game acquiring unique habilities and features for your tracksuit and weapons.
  • The game will be released in Q3 2012, on next months we have planned to release a beta version and also to submit to Steam. Versions for iPad and XBLA are also on our schedule. The game updates will be free and inclusive for the initial game price, also the price of the game will be very competitive with Terraria and Minecraft.

Since this IS a Beta we would appreciate if anyone who does have a problem of any kind please remember this fact and to contact us with any issues. We're not a huge studio, and we don't have 100 different PC's to test this on. It works on our systems, but we are aware that there will be problems here and there with other system configurations.

With a little patience you will realize we're getting to everyone as soon as we can and are fixing bugs as fast as we can which will be released in patches as we go. Next patch is due out Tuesday!

We have about 70% of the items you can research and unlock in the version available now, there are some bugs with unlocking some of them that have been discovered which will be fixed with the next patch. The next patch will have roughly 90-95% of the items that we will have in the first release of the game.

There are quite a few features that will be implemented after release, which we would have loved to put in already but we believe the features we will be adding in the patches will be worth the wait :)

Functionality wise there are quite a few things people have not discovered yet as far as we know, including how to setup elevators, wire your base with the cable system we have in place using wall sockets etc., and all the décor we have for making a cool looking workshop/Lab to craft in. Most of that stuff you start getting after your unlock more research a few times

Tried to search for a fix to the memory allocation problem for the game, which doesn't exist. Sigh. I guess i'll have to wait a few months for a fix for it.

Looks like a great game to be expanded upon. I just wish I could actually play it. Game crashes every time after I select a world. Running it as an admin didn't help. Running it with a recommended compatability wouldn't even let the game start. >_>

Is there any info on how far you are able to progress in the game on the current build, i have no more research to do and can't find much more to build at the moment. I noticed different weapon types and a flashlight on the video, have they been implemented yet into the game? I can't find any Tar either after about 30 hours of digging and building. Also nothing to do with crystals yet and some cannot be mined, is there a pick upgrade for this or is this a future update? Game has been great so far though Aebanninga, you and your team keep up the excellent work, and hope you have great success with this game.

Hi!

The research works for all the first 6 levels of research, the other 3 will be in with Tuesdays patch. You need to make sure that you have built almost everything, it counts for 75% of items crafted before you unlock new research level. Walls don't count towards this :)

The pistol, rifle, etc are in the game, with the grenade launcher being added this Tuesday and a laser rifle in a patch after that. You can mine crystals at the moment, if there are any items not mining it’s probably using the wrong tool or it’s attached to a tile underneath that you need to harvest.

There should be lots of tar around, but with the next patch Tuesday we have added steam and bubbles on the surface which were not loading in this build. Hope this answers all your questions and we’re glad you like the game! :)

hey proteus, not sure how you are getting way to low resolutions, i can go all way to 1080p no problem, and having no problems tabbing out of game or any issues when hitting Esc when in game. I have played game for about 30 hours now and had no issues with the game whatever, so it may be a problem on your end rather than the games. Thats the problem with PC gaming though, trying to identify whats wrong at times.

I agree it is hard to find bugs and other issues when making games on the windows platform. Or in general too. But I'm not new to this. I actually know what I am doing. Not simply saying it. Also I make it a point to promote as many good indie titles as I can, in whatever way possible. That is why I have a very large collection of games. None of them (no matter if alpha, beta or other) has the problems Darkout presents. Since I know for a fact both my hardware and software is both ok and up to date the only logical answer left is the game it self. Last night I decided to try again. Unfortunatly the game did not remember my account password and did not survive me tabbing out to copy it. So I moved on.
At this time the game needs work done. I hope it will get better. Most probably it will. Then I will get back to it. Right now I have other titles to try out....

Nice look. Great colours. Extremly bad account handling. WAY, WAY to low resolutions. Especially in window mode. Bad scaling of graphics in window mode. Unstable when tabbing out to desktop and pressing ESC from within the game. Close to no settings from within the game. No custom character to speak of.
Needs much, much more play testing and adjusting. Late alpha rather than beta.
Oh, and yes I have enough ram, cpu and such. My computer works like a clock so I know for a fact that this is not the issue at all.
You might want to hold of until later versions. It will probably get better. Time will tell. But they need to hurry up. When "Starbound" comes I think it will blow all similar titles out of the water.

Hmm,Starbound will not blow anything out of the water, wanna know why.cause they made soooo much promises with Terraria, and then,oh sorry,no future uptades.we will work on the next game.Sandbox games without constant uptades and emerging world are no sandbox-games at all.So im not counting on Starbound, although the idea is nice and all.But wouldnt expect tooo much.there will not even be a beta. says everything

First of all what happened with Terraria has nothing to do with Starbound. I actually think they learned from all that. All games sooner or later end their dev cycle. Yes Terraria might have ended a bit soon. But still if that evolves into something better so be it. No tears from me.
If done right sandbox games both evolves and create emergent behaviour in player right from the start. What is allready in Terraria works just fine in those areas. Emergent behavioiur has very little todo with future updates. Other than expand on options and combinations which are present from the beginning. So yes Terraria is still a sandbox game since it allready has extreme amounts of contet to begin with. Could it be more and better. Yes. But that does not affect the gameplay as it is.
Regarding Starbound it is easy to see that it is a "child" of Terraria in many ways. But it is also a completly different beast. If they do half of what is hinted at in trailers and pictures it is going to make nearly all other games in the this particular genre look primitive. Might it fail. Perhaps. But since neither you or me have the ability to see the future before it turns into the present we can not know. To judge beforehand is simply pointless. If they have a public beta or not does not really matter one way or the other. Only that its being made.

To be honest Terraria, despite its obvious issues, runs better than Darkout at present time. Less problems. Better handling of resolutions. No forced account system and at least in my case very, very few crashes.
Do I hope Darkout surpass this. Absolutly! I do hope this will happen.

So no it does not say everything at all...

Now for some review: First, expect more awesome updates because they originally asked for $500 donations and ended w. 5000 I created a full game review in my blog that will hopefully give you all enough information to help you guys decide weather the game is for you or not. I included some beginner's tip, breakdown on the game's features and content, I also put their future plans and upcoming contents and work in progress in there, as welll as the retailers you can get the game from and why I think…

I recently got this game on Desura. It looked very nice and seemed to have an good design. Unfortunatly it is hard to like when it has so many strange design choises. The first obstacle I stumbeled upon was the account. I started the program and it demanded an account. Which I could not create either in game or be linked to any web page to do it. Not until I read some posts in the forums I understood I had to link my desura account so a mail could be sent out. Holy cow what a un-friendly way of…
