You wake up in a dark alley, not knowing anything. What has happened anyway? You struggle after the truth and answers. Answers you want to know in the darkness and fear, which makes your heartbeat race like violent blows against your head. Where do "they" come from? What has happened? Are you just turning insane? The time is up; you can't stay there reading your smses forever. It's time to head out and find the answers. Cry of Fear is a singleplayer modification of Half-Life 1 which brings you the horror you've always been afraid of. It's a total conversion of Half-Life 1, which means it uses NO Half-Life 1 content or other peoples' files. It's all made exclusively by the developers. It also uses new gaming styles that you will rarely find in Half-Life mods, such as advanced cutscenes and other stuff that will be revealed at a later date.
A major disappointment. While the game isn't necessarily bad, it's not good. The story is... "interesting," at best, the VA is *decent* for a mod, and some key elements such as the inventory system or awkward. The horror atmosphere itself isn't bad, however the jump scares are used far too often to remain interesting. Pretty soon you get too used to it, and it just becomes a dark semi-thriller. The level design isn't always particularly interesting, but it is far above what many GoldSrc mods offer.
Truth be told, despite being my most anticipated GoldSrc mod of the last few years, it's nothing special, and is a big disappointment. The mod's developers are clearly talented, but the most impressive thing in this mod is their conversion from GoldSrc to just a weaker version of Source.
Very old, dated game design.
The levels are extremely linear. Item placement is just blatantly bad. Who keeps ammunition clips on their front porch anyway? Where do the painkiller syringes come from? Why are the Swedish cops armed with American weapons?
Not scary, since everything is just based on jump scares.
Pacing is jerky.
Good looking weapon and item models. Good looking cop player models.
The monsters look low-red and sub-par.
My favorite things about this mod, is the nice visuals and atmosphere as expected from a horror game. Since nobody would give me a straight answer though on what kind of game this was... This mod sucks.
-Good dark atmosphere
-Good use of graphics
-Another Depressing Emo Story from authors
(Character's Girlfriend kills herself over him being so emo. Kill's the horror suspense for me.)
-Limited Survival (Lack of ammo, to many enemies, even for normal difficulty. Also limited medical kits "Morphine injections" doesn't really give me a sense of vulnerability, but rather very irritating.) Be prepared to reload saves often.
-Takes too many cues from Resident Evil but doesn't do much to inovate it well. (Yes, the enemies and item system are interesting, but it's spoiled on the account that it's almost taken from RE.)
-Bugs (If you have a weaker computer, this game will have many bugs, if you have a terribly strong computer, this game will have many bugs. Better have something in-between to play.)
A better choice in horror games/mods are.. Doom 3, Fear and it's expansions, Dead Space and sequels, They Hunger Trilogy Mod for HL1, and some of the Resident Evil series as the later ones just have too much action.
Consider my review as the most honest one as I don't **** all over this like everyone else who are easily amused. If you don't care about tedious elements, this game maybe for you. If you don't care about Depressing stories in a horror themed game, this maybe for you. If you prefer not cutting yourself and love to live life another day, this may not be for you. Ringo!
