The time is up; you can't stay there reading your smses forever. It's time to head out and find the answers. Cry of Fear is a singleplayer modification of Half-Life 1 which brings you the horror you've always been afraid of. It's a total conversion of Half-Life 1, which means it uses NO Half-Life 1 content or other peoples' files. It's all made exclusively by the developers. It also uses new gaming styles that you will rarely find in Half-Life mods, such as advanced cutscenes and other stuff that will be revealed at a later date.

Best Upcoming Mod

Every year, hundreds upon hundreds of mods are born—and die—on ModDB. Many barely limp out the gates, while others are die faster than their leaders can type, "I need a team!1!" But every once in while you come across a profile that shows some promise. A flash of color in their media gallery that instantly conveys a glimmer of hope. Something more than the dull greys of half-finished, untextured models or hastily scribbled level blueprints. More than a trailer that just shows off a logo. I'm talking about honest-to-goodness in-game footage—because nothing cuts through the hype more than showing your mod for what it is. The mods nominated for this category all have concrete proof of significant progress in development and will probably see some form of release in 2009.

Lightspire: Fortune's Web

Crysis

Lukewarm_Media wrote: In the game, there are four different heroes, who each have their own background and involvement in the world of Lightspire. The most dominant force in the game world is the dragon elves. They are a dictatorship due to their immense army, and control of vast amounts of land and resources. The first hero - the Dragon Lancer - his story stems from them. As described in the Game World Synopsis, the elves and dragons were involved in a great war. The elves only chance of surviving and avoiding extinction would be to use magic against magic. The elves created a weapon to absorb any magical powers dragons might have had, which resulted in the rapid "de-evolution" of the dragons, and a ‘revolution' of the elves physical traits, including increased strength, vision, and the ability to live even longer than before. The remaining dragons were enslaved, to the point where dragon's mental acuity was vastly inferior to any of the elves.

Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion

Arandor wrote: Nehrim is developed by the Sureai Team (www.sureai.de). We have already created two Total Conversions for Morrowind, named Arktwend and Myar Aranath, but unfortunately there never was an English version of them. This time, however, we will develop a full translated english version of the project. That includes translated texts as well as English voice acting. It is impossible to give a sure release date at this moment, however, we aim to finish Nehrim in 2008. We always keep everything within the bounds of possibility and currently make huge progresses in building the countryside, cities, forests and villages of Nehrim. Our aim is to create a fantasy world which is as lively and atmospheric as realisable in the limits of our possiblilities. We primarily develop Nehrim for those players who love RPGs and were disappointed by Oblivion on that score. Nehrim will be a role playing game with elements of action, no action game with elements of role playing games.

Guys you have to remember this isn't "Players Choice" but instead "Editors Choice". Expect some variety outside popular HL2 mods and considering that only 1 of the mods listed is your typical FPS (Petrograd and it looks fantastic mind you). Show these developers some respect as each one is deserving of this award.

Honestly before the list was put up I had never even heard of Lightspire or Nehrim but looking at their profiles and content my interest has definitely been peaked. Not everyone can win which means not everyone is going to be satisfied with the nominees nor the winners. As fans and developers yourself, show the respect you'd expect for your own games and mods.

Again for all those listed, I wish you the best of luck and hope to have the time to check out all those listed someday.

It's not that people are being disrespectful because yes, these are great mods, but MANY people would have liked to see so much more. With such a small group and when none of them are mods you've been waiting to see often its a little disheartening for the average moddber. I also have to agree a few genres are being given the cold shoulder for these awards.

You'll notice everyone was disappointed not to see a few key mods, kinda says a lot for the 40 thousand people on this site yes?

Lightspire: Fortune's Web would have to be my pick as far as all around quality of models and textures go. But it is a close call...

Well, I'm going to give my 2 1/2 cents again. My personal favourite to win this award is curse, simply because it looks amazing, has some unbelievable originality put into it, the art direction is fantastic and absolutely nothing about it says half life 2. So in respect to those factors, i'd definitely hand this award to Curse. It ticks all the right boxes for me.

However, both cry of fear and lightspire look very promising and will be tough contenders. The fact that cry of fear is a HL1 modification and doesn't look it the slightest is a big bonus on their part, while lightspire simply looks amazing in terms of art direction, gameplay and it finally is a big step away from modern warfare in terms of Crysis mods.

So, in any case. All mods nominated are nominated for a reason, because they are good at what they do. But I think when it comes down to it. It'll be Curse that takes the lead.

I wish people would stop burying comments of disappointed gamers. Everyone has their right to express themselves and what they wanted to see in this contest. This kind of disappointment will be a natural occurrence in the coming weeks so stop looking down on these people. Weren't there mods you wanted to see?

couldn't have agreed more. Of course it'd be fantastic if everyone would win at the awards, let alone get nominated for them - but the fact of the matter is, that simply isn't possible. (Otherwise, what is the point in the awards anyway?) So it's just natural that not everyone is going to see their favorite mods get nominated. Fair enough, these are the editor choice awards, so the player based ones will probably be different, but none the less, fellow community members shouldn't get put down simply because they are dissappointed.

Cry of Fear - bold attempt at reviving 10yr old engine -> adding new gameplay and pushing SP experience. COF is what Paranoia was a year ago! The second place I'd give to Curse - work of 1 man. As far as the visuals go, Petrograd takes the crown, but it's about best upcoming mod not best gfx:) Nuff said! PS - LightSpire got a license for CryEngine2 Edge-online.com so it's not a mod - technically - anymore.

That's what I was getting at before. Nothing helps to build a game then the full engine without the release games content.

That does not mean it should win, because it's using an old engine. What about my project then, its a total conversion of quake, does that mean I should win ?

The fact its a good game means it should win.

Cry of fear really has the style of Resident Evil; Cold blood. It really pushes the goldsource engine, so don't worry about "Old engine biasm" because these days modders are going above and beyond where old engines can look like something new.

Exactly. Quality based on the engines standards not quality based on what engine is used. CoF definitely goes much further then many if not most HL1 mods.

A little disappointed Mechwarrior: Living Legends didn't make the cut for Editors Choice, but to be fair MWLL didn't start really releasing some serious media until January (after 2008), and all the nominee's are based on media released only in 2008.

Also, should Lightspire be considered a mod anymore? It's got an offical license from Crytek to develop now. I guess it can be considered an Indie Game though.

I do think it's good that no mods based on pre-existing IP are here. Also, I'm not sure why everyone is so excited about Black Mesa. I mean, we've all played Half Life already, haven't we? What do you expect to get other than the same game with prettier graphics?
