You wake up in a dark alley, not knowing anything. What has happened anyway? You struggle after the truth and answers. Answers you want to know in the darkness and fear, which makes your heartbeat race like violent blows against your head. Where do "they" come from? What has happened? Are you just turning insane? The time is up; you can't stay there reading your smses forever. It's time to head out and find the answers. Cry of Fear is a singleplayer modification of Half-Life 1 which brings you the horror you've always been afraid of. It's a total conversion of Half-Life 1, which means it uses NO Half-Life 1 content or other peoples' files. It's all made exclusively by the developers. It also uses new gaming styles that you will rarely find in Half-Life mods, such as advanced cutscenes and other stuff that will be revealed at a later date.

Mod of the Year 2010 Editors Choice - Best Upcoming Mod

Posted by on

2010 was the year that has had the most new profiles created to date, and many mods updating with new media and news! To be nominated for an award in Best Upcoming mod projects need to have been updated significantly during 2010 and have not released (obviously) anything more then a demo. We have made special cases for both Dear Esther and Earth's Special Forces due to the length between the last release, the nature of the new update and the quality + quantity of media released throughout 2010. Here are the Editors of ModDB's and our judges top selection of 2010.

Dear EstherDear Esther
is an award-winning, critically acclaimed, experimental first-person game. Built in the Source engine, it abandons traditional gameplay, leaving only a rich world soaked in atmosphere, and an abstract, poetic story to explore. Dear Esther was originally launched in 2008 and is currently being rebuilt by Robert Briscoe

Cry of FearCry of Fear
is a singleplayer modification of total conversion Half-Life which brings you the horror you've always been afraid of. It's all made exclusively by the developers. It also uses new gaming styles that you will rarely find in Half-Life mods, such as advanced cutscenes and other stuff that will be revealed at a later date.

Hexen: Edge of ChaosHexen: Edge of Chaos
is based on the original Hexen game that was developed by id Software and Raven Software. The story ties into the expansion packs and also touches upon the Heretic narrative; especially the incredible atmosphere painted into these rich worlds and their darkling journeys.

Earths Special ForcesEarth's Special Forces
is a fast paced, 3rd person fighter based on the hit anime, Dragonball Z. Select your favorite character and fly, power up, transform, melee, and beam your enemies into pulp. Each character is given signature moves and abilities to compliment different style of play. Some are stronger in hand to hand combat, others are better with energy attacks.

Blade SymphonyBlade Symphony
is a game built on the Source Engine featuring fierce duels in an alternate universe. Play as the cyber-ninja Hokuten Assassins, the fabled Black Rose knights, or as the shinobi and ronin Vagrants.

Blade Symphony and Cry Of Fear are the ones that should win. Dear Esther was already released once, now they are just re-making it. It shouldn't even be here. But that's just my opinion.

Congratulations Dear Esther, truly a phenonemal mod. Same goes for the other mods nominated, especially Blade Symphony. Thank you everybody for the support for CoF too, it's very appreciated.

With so many incredible mods in production, picking the nominees for this award was a hugely difficult task. While I would have chosen some different ones myself, I can't argue that the ones listed are absolutely awesome in their own right.

I was very sure that Dear Esther would win, even though I was banking for CoF, it's good to see that a mod that utilises such an old engine can get such great recognition next to some newer more advanced productions tech wise.

Dear Esther fully deserves it's place in the top spot, it's taken the capabilities of Valve's award winning Source engine and multiplied them by a 100, rivalling Cryengine 2 in terms of photo-realistic graphics.

Well done to all the mods that made into the final showdown!

Working on a Cryengine 2 project myself I have to agree - man that cave at the end of the video o_O

Thinking about it I'm asking myself what would happen if you multiply the capabilities of CE2 by 100 ^^

Anyway it's clear Dear Esther didn't just win because of the eyecandy, the atmosphere was surely another reason. A good choice :)

I can't believe a mod that has ONLY a graphic demonstration won. Sure it's pretty, but that should not be the only criteria that matters.
There were other mods in the nominees that look both pretty to look at and good to play.

Know you know why I don't have any faith in the editors. I want a gameplay ffs.

Only graphic demonstration?

Dude, they released it before, this is a remake...so people know, it won many real life awards too, you ijjit.

It's a work of art. You feel something profound after having played it.

good game play is the key to a good game if u don't agree tell it to the millions of fans that played crappy star craft 2 graphics for years on end a game with great graphics is good the first second you look at it and isent interesting the second time because you already seen what it has to give :/ the editors are derp don't expect much from these awards personally

Very nice picks. :)

Though, in the end I'm not surprised Dear Esther won. The other entries are fantastic, no doubt about it; but Dear Esther has an unparalleled level of craftsmanship to it. However, who knows where the Players' choice will go...I'm still hopeful for Blade Symphony and Cry of Fear to receive special honors later down the line. :)

How come ESF is on this list? that mod has been in development for years and has been in previous awards listings. Frankly its unfair that its there, despite the good work they've done we should be focusing on original ideas, not rehashes of popular IPs.

they add it in to be fair but it wont win because its won too many times prior so don't need to complain
