An AR-15 is an AR-15. No need to mention carbine. All short or compact rifles are carbines, that what carbine means. There must be over a hundred AR-15 models by now which includes the military variants. M4 & M16 aren't the models. As far as the military is concerned, if it's short it's an M4 and if it's long it's an M16.
Anyway the M4 carbine was the M16A2 carbine before it was the M4 series. Since the carbine is the fourth carbine in U.S military service since the M1 carbine we catalogue AR-15 carbines A.K.A CAR-15's as M4 carbines. Just like we catoluge AR-15 rifles as M-16s.
The reason one is called an M4 and the other is the M16 is simply because one is a long rifle and the other is a carbine. Calling one on an M16 carbine and the other and M16 rifle would just encourage miscommunication.
They're all built with the same parts. The RO635 or M4A1 as you know it just features a shorter wide barrel with a step cut, a shorter yet wider handguard and the recievers are modified to take a three position trigger group.
