So, why does my player name or character not save when I exit the game?
It seems a bit stupid that I should have to enter my name and customise my character every time I start the game.
Any future plans to be able to save a customized character?

This sounds like a permission issue. What directory did you install the game into? Unfortunately epic's Beta UDK requires write permissions on the directory in which you installed the game. Hopefullly Epic will be fix this in a future release or we can find a workaround. For now you can try and make sure you have write permissions for the game installation directory. Let me know if it works and sorry for the inconvenience.

The game was installed in into C:\Program Files as I do with nearly everything.

I uninstantiated the game and reinstalled it into my documents and now it appears to have worked! My name and customized character remain as I left them when exiting the game. Thanks for the advice!
Now all I have to do is wait for another player...
