I bought and played this on steam. This game is a masterpiece of its genre. The amazing true 8-bit graphics combined with the extremely catchy soundtrack and the side-scrolling fast paced hack n slash gameplay will entertain you throughout the entire game.
This game has a great plot and will entertain you for at least 9 hours per playthrough (and you will need several playthroughs to get every weapon, every ending and every item).
The replay value is really high as you cannot get everything in one playthrough even if you followed a guide. There are three routes to get all of the weapons and multiple endings.
The controls are a bit unresponsive in my opinion, but you will get used to it. You don't have much mid-air control.
The boss fights and the combat system in general is epic, addicting, challenging and fast-paced. I loved every second of this game. Reccomended to anyone who enjoys hack-n-slash action and 8 bit graphics / music.

This game is an utterly fantastic platformer reminiscint of similar games from the SNES days of yore. If that is what you are looking for, great! You can also switch between several sound and graphical options if you had played an earlier version and perfer the look of it (or the sound). Controls are absolutely solid and responsive as well. Gameplay-wise there are also several alternate weapons, routes, and 'sidemissions' that the player can do. Not much else to say, because for me it was perfect.

Cave story is an indie freeware game from long ago. Recently, the small company NICALIS decided to remake CS for PC, Mac, DSi, Wii and 3DS. This is one of those versions!

If you're new to Cave Story, this is really the definitive way to experience the game. It's great fun, too, so you really don't want to miss it!

If you've already played Cave Story, though, you might not want to pay $9.99 for a game you've already played. Aside from a few new gamemodes (including the option to play as Curly), new music and slightly updated graphics, there's not much new to see here.

Cave story is really an engrossing experience that'll take you many hours to complete if you go for the best ending. Innovative level system, original story, great controls and AWESOME music (the original music is better in my opinion). If you don't want to pay $9.99 for a game you don't know if you'll like, download the original freeware version to try it out! If you see CS+ on sale, don't hesitate to pick it up!

Love the old school feeling. Great music, sound effects, story, and weapons.

Pretty awesome game, a real modern classic, if a little overrated.

The "first experience" is a real blast, but there's not a lot of replay value after that. Also, it's a bit too linear to be considered a "true" metroidvania, IMHO.

This is one to "archive" and play again once or twice a year. And, if you ask me, the "Free Edition" (i.e. the original game, which, unfortunately, is not available any longer in Desura) is probably all you need.

If you still haven't played Cave Story (shame on you!), you should do it, right now!

Wonderful, but hard. I wish I could shoot diagonally. Best freebie on Desura!

I absolutely loved Cave Story back when I played it on my PSP. I recently saw Cave Story+ on Steam for ~$10, and was disappointed that it was not free. I'm glad I can get it on Desura!
