We're a little late to the party on this one, but the biggest current FPS franchise in the world is bringing back mod support!

Posted by INtense! on Apr 22nd, 2011

Not sure how we missed this news, but thanks to this post on GameFront word is out that modding support is coming to Call of Duty: Black Ops in May. The story broke after a twitter post by one of the Treyarch developers, was officially confirmed by the community manager. According to the same developer "pcdev" the reason why these tools are coming out half a year after the games release is:

pcdev wrote:There are some purely technical issues related to engine and internal tool enhancements that do not easily fit the mod tools paradigm. We have looked at it close enough to see that it is non-trivial and we will have to pick it up again post-launch.

Call of Duty is the biggest FPS franchise in the world netting over a billion in sales, and previous versions of the game such as Call of Duty 4 have had huge modding popularity. This is excellent news because the controversial previous version of the game Modern Warfare 2, famously ignored the PC community pleas of dedicated servers and modding support. Which occurred despite the fact that many of the new features found in that game, were ideas first explored by the CoD4 modding community.

So if you plan on making a Black Ops mod, submit it to ModDB today.

Agreed. CoD 2 was my first CoD game and probably the first shooter i've played. Still remember the days I spent playing it. After it I played MW1 and was a bit disappointed. And then I played the others and still can't believe how a game series with such an awesome start could fail so hard later.

Well I just mean, they didn't release these until they had force fed people DLC.

I bet the DLC didn't sell well, because there was a massive de-hype campaign about it everywhere. So now they are doing this to try to make amends.

Be insanely easy to make a SDK for this...I mean christ, it's running on the Quake 3 Engine!

A modified q3 engine.

It's already been maximunm modified. There's no more possibilities of this engine.

That's why no advanced physics in CoD titles.

OK here is the situation....

Infinity Ward "screwed the pooch" when they told us PC gamers in a sense to "F**K OFF" thanks for your money on MW1 but leave game elements to the "PROFESSIONALS". All Activision does is come in 1 - 1.5 years later and give us something to hold out over until the next "GREAT RELEASE", however.... MW1 allowed us to shoot through walls and customize our guns which for a popular FPS series was and still is A TOTAL WIN, plus THE COMMUNITY HAD A SAY IN ITS DESIGN!!!!

Battlefield 3....

There WILL be a closed BETA, however I have been looking at Battlefield PLAY4FREE and I have noticed some game design changes that look SIMILAR too that the Devs are trying with BF3....interesting... albeit not the same engine but the mechanics are there. BFP4F is being built by COMMUNITY SUPPORT, I believe that BFP4F is really an "OPEN ALPHA" test for BF3 and the lessons and opinions of the "testers" will be carried over into BF3 (mind you BFP4F is a separate game from BF3 & BF2). If this truly is the case then expect Battlefield 3 to OWN THE FPS GENRE AND FPS COMPETITIONS FOR 1-2 YEARS (if done correctly, and there are sings showing with a few discrepancies that BF3 will be a hit). What makes me think this??? Well 3 of the 3 maps on BFP4F are in the BACK TO KARKAND EXPANSION (Sharqi, Oman, & everyone's hated favorite Karkand), also BFP4F CLOSED BETA started right around BF3's OFFICIAL RELEASE ANNOUNCEMENT, also are the key aspects of gameplay being different from BF2 and BFBC2 but a BLEND which is what the Dev's are aiming for, COINCIDENCE I DON'T THINK SO.

Mkilbride Apr 24 2011 replied:

Battleifled has always been a popular series.

But it has always been over-shadowed. BF2 & BC2 never reached the same player count as MW1 & MW2 on the PC...which is sad, because you'd think BC2 would easily beat MW2 or BLops, but it didn't in sales, or playerbase...

So, it's not always the better game that comes out that owns the FPS genre.

Though Counter-Strike is still the most played FPS on the PC, if you combine 1.6 & CS:S, that is .

It's a combination of super USA marketing strategies (That's how Coke, McDonalds, Chips are so popular) and an extreme lack of people who think for themselves and aren't dependent on social life.

Ricochet_Saw May 13 2011 replied:

actually CS1.6 alone is the most played FPS on pc, followed by CSS, then MW2, then blops, since i doubt any game is being played more then either of the cod titles, and all 4 of the aforementioned games are steamworks titles, im pretty sure that they are the 4 most played pc fps'
