BOH is a unique retro-flavoured puzzle-riddled dungeon crawler spiced up with thrilling action.
You move in claustrophobic, mysterious, dangerous battlefields searching for the Evil Masters, who throw countless enemies at you until you discover and face them in the final battle. Although your quests are made slightly less hard by the power-ups scattered all around, carrying out the missions demands lots of concentration and quick reflexes.

4/4/2014: easy remember, the date of the 5th anniversary of BOH. There is no better way to celebrate the event than releasing a brand-new edition that majestically closes the incredible evolution the game underwent since its original release.

DESURA USERS: PLEASE READ THE NOTE AT THE BOTTOM BEFORE INSTALLING.

The 5th Anniversary Edition:

  • includes all the updates released previously;
  • reworks the video modes handling (full screen by default; window on 16-bit screens allowed; more robust; etc.);
  • adds the CRT and LCD pixel modes;
  • adds the 5x zoom;
  • adds 5 new missions, bringing the total to a massive 60;
  • assigns the pause to the [ESCAPE] key (instead of a specific key), which thus no longer causes the immediate abort of the current mission;
  • reworks the menu controls (more keys; do not depend anymore on the in-game controls configuration);
  • adds the emergency configuration reset (assigned to the key [F12]);
  • adds the screenshot functionality (assigned to the key [F1]);
  • makes quitting by means of [ALT]+[F4] available on all platforms;
  • sets the default URL for records submission to Retream.com (it is no longer necessary to specify such URL manually in the configuration file);
  • replaces the copy code with an email address for the records submission;
  • updates the manuals;
  • applies many other optimizations/changes/fixes, for more performance, polish and robustness.

The demos have been updated to reflect the changes.

IMPORTANT: Desura's automatic update process will trash your records; if you want to preserve them, please pack the missions directory and send it to boh@retream.com.

I can't say for sure, but maybe there'll be another update: just minutes ago I received a message regarding the Dutch translation and it would be just sad to release just that... so I'll do my best to come up with new features and prepare a proper update package ;)

... and, no, don't ask for strafing + turning - actually, strafing is already gone now :p

Really interesting game. Played the demo - the 'Harder and Harder' mission got a little too hard for me!

I have to say my favorite parts of the game are the different themes (Castle and Vector are my favorites) and the presentation. By presentation I mean that the "always facing up" and rotating the map combined with the lighting and field of vision is really cool.

The main part I didn't like is the constant respawning enemies coming from every direction, but that may just be because I'm not very good at turning around and killing them fast enough. The atmosphere of the game made me wish I could just slow down and think about what to do next, but the enemies wouldn't leave me alone long enough for that.

That's just my feeling about it though. It seems like it's pretty well balanced and hard enough to be a fun challenge for someone who likes action games more than I do. If you ever made a game like this that was more puzzle and mystery instead of puzzle and action I'd really like to play it ^^.

"tougher and tougher" mission: yes, that mission is really hard. Starts easy, gets tough. It's meant to show how deep the game can go. But please keep in mind that not all missions are that though - indeed, the difficulty of "tougher and tougher" is rated "very hard", but the full game, besides the "very hard" missions, has tens of missions with lower difficulty (namely, "very easy", "easy", "average", "hard").

Graphic system: glad you liked it :)

Respawning: yes, the respawning is meant to have exactly the effect you experienced, that is, pressuring the player while he's trying to find the right path in the maze. However - this is a general advice I always give to everybody - one should never fear enemies too much, nor, even more importantly, spend time fighting them: the less time is spent fighiting, the better! ;)

Difficulty in general: (hint) have you tried to set the game difficulty to "easy" from the options menu? This is what it does (taken from the user's manual): "The 'easy' option reduces the enemies spawning rate, increases the weapons power by 1 LP and allows to restart from the last phase played" - this greatly helps especially in missions like "tougher and tougher" ;)

Ah, forgot to mention: of course one's shooting skills improve with practice, so don't worry too much about not being good enough right from the start ;)

Ah, that 'easy' setting sounds like exactly the right thing! I gave up on "Harder and Harder" because I could get to the third phase, but then I'd get stuck or killed and have to start over from the very beginning. I'll have to give it another try with the difficulty turned down.

Easter is coming and - guess what - there are two Easter eggs hidden in BOH, but nobody found them yet... who will be the first? ;)
