BOH is a unique retro-flavoured puzzle-riddled dungeon crawler spiced up with thrilling action.
You move in claustrophobic, mysterious, dangerous battlefields searching for the Evil Masters, who throw countless enemies at you until you discover and face them in the final battle. Although your quests are made slightly less hard by the power-ups scattered all around, carrying out the missions demands lots of concentration and quick reflexes.
With BOH the fun never ends: new missions and themes can be added anytime and you can even create your own!
BOH has been created with lots of passion and care to offer, with its oldschool style, a fascinatingly different gaming experience.

  • immersive & thrilling gameplay
  • 48 missions + 12 secret missions to unlock
  • missions divided in 5 levels of difficulty
  • multi-phase missions
  • multi-floor battlefields of any size/shape
  • mind-blowing puzzles and deadly traps
  • many and varied power-ups
  • several different kinds of enemies
  • hand-pixelled 2D graphics
  • real-time field of vision and lighting
  • atmospheric audio and rich soundtrack
  • 7 themes
  • online world standings

4/4/2014: easy remember, the date of the 5th anniversary of BOH. There is no better way to celebrate the event than releasing a brand-new edition that majestically closes the incredible evolution the game underwent since its original release.

The 5th Anniversary Edition:

  • includes all the updates released previously;
  • reworks the video modes handling (full screen by default; window on 16-bit screens allowed; more robust; etc.);
  • adds the CRT and LCD pixel modes;
  • adds the 5x zoom;
  • adds 5 new missions, bringing the total to a massive 60;
  • assigns the pause to the [ESCAPE] key (instead of a specific key), which thus no longer causes the immediate abort of the current mission;
  • reworks the menu controls (more keys; do not depend anymore on the in-game controls configuration);
  • adds the emergency configuration reset (assigned to the key [F12]);
  • adds the screenshot functionality (assigned to the key [F1]);
  • makes quitting by means of [ALT]+[F4] available on all platforms;
  • sets the default URL for records submission to (it is no longer necessary to specify such URL manually in the configuration file);
  • replaces the copy code with an email address for the records submission;
  • updates the manuals;
  • applies many other optimizations/changes/fixes, for more performance, polish and robustness.

The demos have been updated to reflect the changes.

IMPORTANT: Desura's automatic update process will trash your records; if you want to preserve them, please pack the missions directory and send it to

Very good, glad that I stumbled upon this game. Very different than what I'm used to, pretty glad for that.

Thanks! Although BOH is based on elements taken from various games of the 80s and 90s (see the FAQ on the website if you're curious about the details), the outcome is quite unique, so I'm glad when people appreciate it's being different :)

When you +back and +forwards you always run forward.
+moveleft and +moveright will turn in whichever direction.

They should cancel each other out?

saimo Jul 7 2010, 4:31am replied:

No, they shouldn't - the logic is that the last pressed key is the one which dictates the action, regardless of the others, so that the character reacts immediately and without pauses - if the player wants to stop, then it's enough to release all keys.
Indeed, I'm a bit surprised it doesn't work like that when moving backwards: my guess is that I must have forgot to implement that behaviour in that case :p I will fix this immediately, so that the change will be part of the next update.
Thanks for the feedback :)

Strange, by looking at the code, a faint memory resurfaced: it's as if I had already made that change, but somehow got lost... Maybe at some point I reverted to a previous version of the file or worked on a slightly older file on another machine...

Thanks, CiroContinisio!
I can't say for sure, but maybe there'll be another update: just minutes ago I received a message regarding the Dutch translation and it would be just sad to release just that... so I'll do my best to come up with new features and prepare a proper update package ;)

Stay tuned everybody...
... and, no, don't ask for strafing + turning - actually, strafing is already gone now :p
