BlackSoul BlackSoul BlackSoul

BlackSoul is a third person survival horror adventure game with an intriguing story that takes place somewhere in the English countryside: people have been turned into psychotic killers by an unknown infection and you must try to help Ava and Sean survive in the quarantined area and find out the truth about the infection. You won't spend all your time on a killing spree, but you'll need to solve many puzzles which will challenge you.

The story is set in England in 1972. Forget any government research labs in which they're working on some kind of ultimate weapon; instead think of something much sadder and crueler...and even if the story is not based on truth, we'll tell you about some events that really happened in the mid century.

  • choose between cinematographic ( RE1 ) and tracking camera ( RE5 ).
  • more dynamic fight: crowbar range increased, characters and zombies animations speeded up and more

We're using something we call a "dynamic camera system" (like Silent Hill). This means that BlackSoul uses a third person camera but not at a fixed distance behind and slightly above the player (no tracking camera). Anyway the camera isn't fixed in the scene, but it can look at the player and move when the player moves, thus giving the game new and disturbing cinematic qualities. "Dynamic camera" means that BlackSoul is not pre-rendered and everything you see is computed in real time.
Ava and Sean are the two main characters who have distinct personalities and some different skills (like speed, health and so on) in order to make the gameplay as varied as possible. Health doesn't regenerate automatically; you need to use a medikit (you'll find medikit exploring levels).
Weapons range from a crowbar to some firearms. They have different features: damage, rate of fire, reload velocity, accuracy and so on. There isn't infinite ammo but only that which you can find somewhere on each level. In this way choosing the best weapon in a given situation can make the difference between life and death.
We have different kinds of enemies, ranging from "walking" to "running" enemies. They will have different skills such as strength and health, apart from speed, in order to make the action much more strategic. Enemies cannot only hurt, but they can also infect you. Infection slowly decreases your health until you drink the antidote...or die.
Puzzles are another important feature. You need to find one ore more items to be used together in order to activate a device or free a passage (or anything else); in this case you must find all the items you need (this will force you to explore accurately each level) and then use them in the right way. Often you'll only need to use your brain or your senses. For example, you should figure out how to open a safe by reading a document. Some puzzles require a more detailed perspective (for example, to open a safe you must rotate the handles). In this case we use the point-and-click system, something like graphic adventure (camera close to the object and a little hand to perform action).
Exploration is another feature of the game: you need ammo to reload your gun and a medikit and antidote to treat yourself, and you will find them only by exploring each level accurately. For this reason we've made very wide levels, giving you the opportunity to move all around them. Sometimes exploration can also help you find documents in order to add some great detail to the story.
By exploring the world you'll find several items and can manage all that stuff in your inventory. There are distinct actions to perform depending on the object you want to use or analyze. For example, you can read a document, listen to a cassette player, and destroy a wall by using a pickaxe.
Last but not least is the soundtrack. Especially in a survival horror game you need amazingly immersive other words you need the best: Gargiulo.

Unfortunately, I can't play the game :( bought it today, couldn't install due to MCF Install Error, so I downloaded the installer. My config executable won't show up to my screen resolution, it will only go as up as 1280X768 (as seen here: and I am running on a 1920x1080 res. My friend also bought the game, and his config seems to go up to his resolution (1600x900).

Also, regardless of running the game in fullscreen or not, it will always show up in the corner, very small (as seen here: and if I maximize the window, it has a weird menu:

Even if I manage to start the game it crashes a couple of minutes in. I am running both executables as admin. Windows 8.

the problem is the OS: the game support XP, Vista and 7.

There should be a visible warning that it won't run on Windows 8 (at least I can't find it). Compatibility mode also does nothing.

It's alright though, I have a machine being repaired that has Windows 7, so I'll play it there.

Desura should have the requirements displayed when buying a game though, hopefully they add that soon. Meanwhile, maybe you could get that visible somewhere? A lot of people are using Windows 8 nowadays. Cheers.

Yes you're right, it seems there is just the windows icon, with no detail about the OS version. We could make it visible in the Summary, but I have to contact Desura.

I'm sorry for that, but I'm happy you have a Win 7 PC too :)

I'm also having a problem installing game. Just purchased and am getting the same error, and nothing happens when I click full installer through Desura program . I had a problem with another game awhile back and the dev reccomended I use the full installer, but it also did nothing when I clicked on it. So, I tried to just open Desura in my internet browser (Google Chrome) and go to, then clicked on the full installer on the game's page there. It worked with the other game, and also worked for this. The problem seems to be related to the Desura program itself. Just to warn you, it is VERY slow, for your average 600MB game, and this game is about 1.5GB, and it says it will take about a half hour to download the setup file. The installer is downloading now, and I'm not positive that the game will work, once it's all set, but I figured I would at least let you all know that you can try that too :D I have a feeling it will work just fine, and that it is a Desura program issue again :D

UPDATE: Got the full installer to work by doing the above method. However, once downloaded, I had two icons on desktop, one for configuration the other to play. I set the config to my desired resolution 1600x900, but it looks AWFUL when I opened and I can tell it is not 1600x900, but rather the 640x480 which is the lowest I have ever even heard of a resolution being. Anyway I tried using the options in game, but there are no video/graphic options, only game options. So I exited and tried to open the config again, it was set back to the 640x480 again. I tried 2 more times, I even tried to pick the next one down from 1600x900 which is 1440x900, same thing. Also the menu in the game looks like it is blurred and showing two languages. The language thing looks latin or celtic so maybe that is intentional and the blurring makes it hard to tell, but I think that is from resolution problems. I am so frustrated at this point because I missed the Groupees sake and was so excited to see this go on sale at Desura and have spent the last couple hours trying to play this damn game. Hoping there is a code file that I can manually change the resolution, as I have had to do that in another game awhile ago, or some other fix because the game looks like crap as it stands now :'( If the dev takes awhile to get back to me, does Anyone else have this problem or have any ideas?

One last thing-I read the "readme" file and the letterbox IS checked in the config box (it was by default anyway) and I have AMD Radeon graphics card, and it says if so I have to install this NVIDIA PhysX .exe file. That seems weird but I did it anyway and I am still having no luck changing the settings or rather getting them to stay changed :(

thanks for purchasing.

About the download we have already reported this problem to Desura.

Instead about the resolution, probably you are running under Vista or 7: simply launch both the BSConfig.exe and BlackSoul.exe as administrator.

We will add this into in the readme with the next update.

Let me know if you keep having problems.

Have fun!!!

desura version of the game doesn't work for me (mcf install error)
maybe if it worked this would be so much different, but to actually be messaged by one of the devs requesting i rate the game can only mean he wants the review fast, so here it is, broken game is a broken game
