'Bernie Needs Love' is a simple and lighthearted platformer in which the player must guide Bernie, a nice but anguished old man chased by death, towards his girlfriend, while avoiding the many hazards of a poorly maintained city and collecting blue 'love-enhancing' pills.

The first 5 stages are already available on Kongregate as a preview of what the full game will be. This web-based version will be updated frequently as new levels and features are added and bugs are fixed — so you can rely on being able to enjoy a lot of the game online for free.

For those who wish to own a copy of 'Bernie Needs Love', with all the content of the web version plus many extra levels, enemies and features, there will be a commercial multiplatform version — initially built for Windows, Android, and the Chrome Web Store. Other systems might be added further down the line, so let us know if your favorite platform is not included.

The availability of Meatballphobia on Google Play and Amazon marks the first stage of the release of our new game, which will soon be available for Windows, Linux, and Windows Phone as well.

We've put a lot of effort into creating a modern puzzle experience with a retro feel that plays naturally and smoothly on both desktops and mobile platforms, and we are glad to say we truly believe we have succeeded at doing so, as do our testers - but you will be the judge of that.

Compared to our beloved platformer Bernie Needs Love - currently in development for Windows and Linux and available with a 50% discount while in beta right here on Desura - Meatballphobia is a much more relaxed experience, with no timer, no highscores, no competitive elements whatsoever: just 50 mind-bending levels of increasing difficulty, all unlocked and available since the first run. The goal is quite simple: you must manipulate the levels in order to drive a meatball onto an unfortunate hysterical head.

This premise might sound over-simplistic and somewhat absurd at first, but we assure you there are many deeper layers of meaning in this. As the description of the game fittingly says, "Meatballphobia is a 2D physics puzzle game about flesh and meat, about the enslavement of both the consumed and the consumer, about life and the systems built around it".

To better illustrate what the theme Meatballphobia is all about, please allow me to quote one of my replies to a question made on the Reddit thread we sent to /r/AndroidGaming last Sunday: "...the idea came from my own discomfort with not only the way meat is produced and the fact it is a fundamental part of my diet, but with the very natural rule that forces one creature to devour another in order to survive. Since the other members of my team share those issues, it was easy convincing them we should invest our efforts in the development of Meatballphobia. I'm not a vegetarian for many reasons, nor does the game have a vegetarian subtext, but I really wanted to create an engaging and entertaining puzzle game that makes the player think about life, about animal and human enslavement, and about the brutality of our current food production and distribution methods."

If you take a look at the following screenshots, you might see that we went for a slightly unsettling 8-bit aesthetics, while permeating the whole thing with a very humorous tone:

Finally, regarding Bernie Needs Love, we'd like to add that development is going strong and the next update will introduce many bug-fixes and nice features such as widescreen support. We are also working hard on adding much more variety in levels 2-1 to 2-10 (which will take place in carnival-related areas). Moreover, we expect to add a new 64-bit Linux build with that update, since a couple of users brought to our attention they had to install additional packages to run the game in that environment.

Right after uploading version 0.78, we realized there were still some bugs that needed fixing. Being so, I have just uploaded version 0.781 with the following changes:

- Fixed several errors related to toggling the background music on and off and switching from level selection to an actual level.

- Fixed the horizontal offset of moving level icons during level selection by applying a correction in the x axis.

- Fixed opening level 1-8 with the key on European keyboards (the same happened when opening the aforementioned level with the key on American keyboards).

I'm still working on a new article to describe what we managed to implement so far and what is expected for the next builds — mainly because we want to include a nice video to show off the new level and the Xbox 360 controller support.

Anyway, the update to v0.781 should be available pretty soon.

Hello friends!

I have just uploaded version 0.78, which is a major update with many fixes and new features — including a new level, a new subarea (Downtown), a new music track, and Xbox 360 controller support! Now, as usual, it is only a matter of waiting for approval from the Desura staff.

Here is the list of changes:

- Changed the speed of the dead Bernie message, which is now faster.

- Added stage 1-8, which introduces a new subarea called Downtown, and a new darker, moodier music track to go with the new atmosphere.

- Changed the motion logic of everything that was affected by the framerate, so that such game elements are no longer framerate dependent.

- Changed the physics logic of bouncing in order to prevent jerky movement when performance drops.

- Added compatibility with the Xbox 360 controller.

- Fixed help screen bugs that allowed for inadequate input.

That's it! I'll try to post a news article to show the changes in more detail, and to talk a bit about what is planned for the next versions. Have fun and thanks for the support!

I just wanted to let you know I have just uploaded a new update! As soon as the Desura staff approves it, you should be able to download the new version.

I'm still working on the 8th stage, but I thought it would be nice to release version 0.778 before 0.8 in order to fix the issues some of you have encountered and kindly reported.

Here is the list of changes:

- Bugfix: score over help screen during level selection;
- Bugfix: gap between water tiles that appeared in some systems (with no need for an alternative build with a different scaling method, phew!);
- Bugfix: level 5 score reset after quitting and reopening the game;
- Bugfix: European keyboards now should recognize the <Z> key;

Once more, thank you all for the support, for the kind words, and for letting us know of those issues! I hope you have a fun weekend playing the game free of those nasty little bugs! ;)

It's taking a bit longer than I expected for the update to be approved, though — but I guess it's because it's Saturday and, being so, the Desura staff might have a bigger queue of uploads to process.

Either way, when the update to version 0.778 is actually available for you to download, please let me know if it indeed solves the keyboard issue you've found. If it doesn't, I'll look for another solution.

Very chalenging game. Good work, man. I saw one thing that could be fixed, though - in level 3 the water will seperate into nasty tiles, devided by one line of black pixels...and the game through an exeption when I closed it. But a very cool experience for only 2€!
How about an iOS & Android version?
Hope this thing will get bigger ;)

Thanks also for letting us know about the water tiling bug! Yesterday, actually, we saw it happen for the first time and spent some hours trying to find out what causes it. The update we expect to upload this weekend will have it fixed for the windowed mode, but we might have to upload a separate version (which will be available to everyone who bought the game) that uses a different scaling mode to fix the issue both for the windowed and the fullscreen mode, the downside being the fullscreen game becomes a little smaller. As soon as we discover a way to fix this issue with the main scaling mode, we will drop the alternative version. We are very sorry you are one of the few who encountered this bug, by the way.

We are surely going to port the game to Android once the desktop version is complete. As for iOS, we would love to do it, but it might take us a little more time because, first, we have to get ourselves at least a Mac mini and an iPhone — but it's on our list, nonetheless.

I'm already working on the 8th stage, which we were hoping to release this weekend with the aforementioned update, but I might end up uploading a bugfix version first to solve the issue you've found and a few other unexpected bugs other players told us about (namely, the score display over the help screen during level selection, and European keyboards forcing players to press 'Y' when it should be 'Z').

Our intention is to release the full version when we have 30 levels, which will cover 3 different areas: downtown (already included in the beat up to level 7, as you've seen), a carnival parade, and the beach.

Once more, thank you very much for letting us know about the issue you've found and for the kind support! I'll do my best to upload a fix for the tiling bug you've found later tonight. 'Till then, I hope this issue doesn't spoil your fun!
