Please note that there are no custom maps included with this version. I have decided to make Swarm Director 2 work as well as possible with pre-existing maps without redistributing them. A list of suggested addons and where to download them is included in the addons folder and is reproduced below:

Improved AI Director

All Director-spawnable aliens

All alien types seen here can be spawned by the new director, both as members of hordes and as wanderers around the map. The frequency of hordes and wanderers depends on the difficulty settings and the number of marines, and can also be tweaked by mappers.

The frequency of each individual wanderer type can be modified for each map - for example, Sewer Junction B5 has more parasites, mortarbugs, and harvesters than Landing Bay, and the first map of Paranoia has more boomers and shieldbugs.

The director can also spawn multiple NPCs together. This is currently used to spawn 4 shamans in a pack, but it can spawn any combination of alien types and scale health, size, and speed, or even make an alien immune to fire, ice, electricity, or flinching.

The AI director uses spawn lists based on Alien Swarm: Beyond Brutal with the new drone mutations added.


The asw_controls cvar is now per-player. This means that a group of friends no longer has to agree whether they want first or third person. Each player can choose separately. The game will also store your choice for this variable between sessions. There is no need to use the firstperson or thirdperson commands - the game handles it all for you.


Swarm Director 2 v2 contains fixes for several common campaign bugs which caused things like bad AI pathing, bot marines not following correctly, maps built for insane spawning not working on brutal, and so on.

It also fixes several map-specific bugs, such as events on Cargo Elevator and Oasis Colony Spaceport triggering without all marines present and mission failure being triggered if a tech died when he was no longer needed on the Dead City maps.

Additionally, Tears for Tarnor, Operation Cleansweep, Royal Harvest, and Zoidberg Reactor no longer attempt to load each others' credits, and Jacob's Rest no longer requires two marines for any of its missions.


func_asw_fade and prop_asw_fade have been added. These allow mappers to build things like ceilings and bridges that the player can pass under in third person but still see in first person. They fade to a mapper-specified transparency in third person when the active marine is below a point controlled by the mapper in Hammer. Faded func_asw_fade and prop_asw_fade are ignored by traces such as targeting for arcing weapons like the grenade launcher and flares.

  • Medic bots will now use heal beacons if the squad is missing a total of at least 90 health.
  • Several weapons aim much more reliably in first person view.
  • The shieldbug's autoaim target has been moved from the front of its head to the middle of its bubble.
  • The radial menu and the hack menus work correctly in first person view.
  • Empty medkits are no longer usable in energy weapons mode.
  • Hand grenades are no longer removed at 0 charges in energy weapons mode.
  • AI marines no longer fire their entire pistol clip at once.
  • AI marines can no longer walk on biomass.
  • AI marines no longer swap weapons when both weapons are out of ammo.
  • Improved positioning when avoiding boomer bombs, mortarbug bombs, and doors that are about to fall.
  • The experience bar during mission briefing now scales correctly for promotions 4, 5, and 6.
  • Drones no longer attack parasite eggs.
  • asw_egg entities with no angles are rotated randomly.
  • The keyvalues for asw_spawner from AS:SP and AS:RD are supported.
  • trigger_playermovement now works on marines.
  • asw_auto_record will save demos of missions you play.
  • Added asw_tilegen_instance.
  • Deathcam works in first person.
  • Spectators can see the minimap of the player they are spectating.
  • Marines no longer visually fall through moving floors like the ones in Operation Cleansweep: USC Medusa.
  • Optional motion blur has been added for aliens, marines, doors, and physics props.
  • Fixed loadout changes not checking which player owned the marine.

I'm using my PS3 controller, everything works except even
if I assign the mouse to my analog, A.S seems to overide it

I was playing the campaign with my brother and we where forced into playing medic/technician in order to have sufficient utility, but we lacked having a balanced squad since AI players do not join, making the game very difficult even on normal.

Gameplay good.
Unlockables nice.
Graphics peachy.
Team play nice.

Campaign short.
Maps short.
Story/plot non-existent.
Only single map practice mode, can't play entire campaign offline.
No briefing voice acting.
New alien designs... lacking in appearance, just essentially blobs with talons for the most part.
Whiny idiots complaining that because it's free it's above reproach and shouldn't be given any critical feedback whatsoever because "it's free!!! DON'T LIKE IT DON'T PLAY IT THEN!!! WAAA WAAA!!!" and so on...
Constructive criticism no longer allowed apparently, which I'm sure the developers will appreciate being given nothing back but smiles, giving them nothing to improve in the game.

Not really sure how you can list whiny kids saying it's a free game so it shouldn't deserve proper feedback. If anything I would expect the whiny kids to be the ones who would want to complain about stuff they don't like in a free game. So to be honest, I'll stick with, if you don't want it, don't download it, simple as that. also, thats not really a con of the game, thats just pointing out something you hate about the community, so therefore shouldn't really be on the list. I agree constructive criticism is fair enough.

I actually love this game, it's just too bad the campaign is so short. although, I can imagine people are already working on custom campaigns for it, much like left 4 dead.

Short campaign

This game is definitely worth a download and if it had a longer campaign it would be in my opinion worth a buy. I give this game a 10/10

Although I agree with the "Too short campaign" and "Too short maps" critiques, I'm personally not going to take off points for those just yet. The solution was given away with the game, and I would stake money on the notion that in a month or so, we'll have more custom campaigns than we'll know what to do with. By that point our problem won't be that the experience was too short, it'll be figuring out which campaigns are worth playing balls-deep in same-y crap map packs (for reference, see any game ever that released a custom mapping tool). Thank God for review sites.

(and for those of you who were fans of the original ut2004 mod like myself, I almost guarantee those campaigns will be remade. My hope is that the developers themselves will do it)

The fact that this game is free continues to amaze me. Alien Swarm is a top down shooter that feels like futuristic Diablo II to a large degree. You fight off hordes of aliens with your friends in order to complete missions that require teamwork skill, and sometimes a little luck.
